What ever happened to that feature? many will argue it's not important but I personally wouldn't mind having it as a video player as well
guessing itll be something like a GC port dongle, or just an installer disk to flash, but I've heard nothing about it. Perhaps they've dropped the add on idea and will just include it stock, as it is a bit tight to make the user pay the moderately small licensing fee as an add-on.
I m afraid that they ve dropped it out all together, very unwise. They got the beating for leaving it out on the cube, and making the same mistake twice is more than a mistake, it's called a bad habit.
Possible, but I see that as unlikely, people will see a 12cm hole and shove anything remotely that shape into the hole. For example, I got asked a while back "I have an MP3-CD player. Can I put a DVD full of MP3s in it?"...Errr, nope... It'll either come as standard, or it'll be an add-on, particularly when they could feasibly charge a high profit price for the add-on, and those that want it enough will still pay it.
The fear of piracy has kept nintendo from adjusting their drives to standard stuff. If the Q is any lesson of experience at all, they should embrace the DVD playback. Then again i dont know if the Q used a single or two different lasers ?one for cube games and one for DVD video/AudioCD etc?
I believe it would be just one, as AFAIK the key difference between GC disks and DVDs are the direction the data is read - outside to in or inside to out. I believe the wavelength is the same. This is pretty much backed up by the fact that 8cm DVDs are 1.4gb per layer, which is close enough to the 1.5 gb of Gamecube disks; If you are going to introduce a new format then surely you'd have a smaller wavelength/higher data density? That's all speculation however, as I don't have a Q to test it on, and if I did, I wouldn't rip it apart to check! :lol:
I can obviously not go into details about the protection of the GC disks publicly, but I would recommend a google-search on how the drive works and what makes it different. There's a specific command that unlocks the drive and thats where many mod-chips base their ability, so I can assure you it's not the way that the disk is read that prevents it from running unauthorized material. The native ability of a console to read proper UDF/ISO can spell trouble in general. That is why the GC opted not to in the first place.
Why do you think it may have been dropped? It's such a minor feature and pretty much everyone has a DVD player anyway. Nintendo always touts their machines as Gaming Machines and would obviously focus on that and the features that make the Wii special.
I bet Wi will be an easy to hack console. If it shares so many technical parts with CG then a modchip is not too far in the horizon, and because it uses normal DVD discs that makes everything easier. Just some speculation...
Hmmm it says 12cm discs for Wii and 8cm for Wii discs. Does this mean it uses standard size DVD media as well as Gamecube Media? it says the discs hold 4.7/8.5 GB so that sounds like standard DVD. Also on the top there are 4 ports. Does this mean it can use cube controllers? If so then I will definitly be buying a launch console. i like the new remote but I prefer the standard controller for most things, including old school games and gamecube. :fresh:
Yeah, there's 4 Gamecube game ports. I'd be surprised if they didn't release a DVD dongle. The only reason for not supporting DVD video discs out of the box is the licensing fee per unit to the DVD consortium.
"standard" DVD support doesn't mean 12cm discs.It meas the ability to read standard ISO and UDF formats. That would make the running of pirated games way more easier than it's gonna be if it didn't support UDF/ISO.
I wasn't suggesting for one moment that the GC reads UDF/ISO natively, but simply that the lasers were the same, and as such the Q could get away with one laser rather than 2.
Believe it or not, I do. I 've kept my parents from buying a DVD player all these years so I can force them to have a nintendo console in the living room so I won't have to bring my own everytime i visit. Besides, my mom thinks the Revolution looks nice in White, so I could get black (both are sexy colors and i can't decide really)
Damn, who made that rumor up? Gamecube discs are read exactly the same way as any other CD/DVD. It's just that the data on them is encrypted and that Nintendo used a special file system.
I don't, I have an XBOX, PS2 and 360 which play DVD's though. Having a console play DVD's is a plus for me, it means I have more space under my TV for consoles.
That's cool, I can undertstand people wanting to replace their dvd playing console with a new one having the same feature, but really console playing dvd quality is only adequate. Depends how much into cinemaphile crap people are, im sure its fine for the majority.
