Every man and his dog have a DVD player now though, don't they? When the Gamecube was first released people were still looking for a cheap player but these days you can pick them up for less than £20. I not bothered. It will wear out the drive quicker anyway.
I don't care because I'll probably have a device hooked up that can play DVDs. If it's not my XBOX, it will be the PS2 or a PC. DVD players are easy to come by. Hell, the TV I bought last year had a option for a free DVD player, and it wasn't even a very nice TV. (I actually went with the VHS option because I needed a newer one. ^_^;; ) We'll see. It's a long time till fall.
There's still that mystery slot on the bottom on the console (it's not a Nintendo console if it isn't crammed full of useless ports) so who knows what they're planning. If I could find the picture I'd post it, but it's on the surface that faces down when it's inside the base.
The mystery slot I think is the SD slot actually, and nothing more besides that in it. If you're reffering to the Vertical bottom of the console..I haven't seen any pictures in which it is anything more than a side. (the top side is of course the gamecube dock)
It's the vertical bottom, opposite the vertical top's GCN ports. There's a space for a warranty sticker and an odd-shaped panel which presumably covers a slot.
Hell for 60 bucks you get a pretty slim one with Divx and WMV, way better than a console. The only console that could take advantege of that situation would be the PS3, but Bluray hype isn't even near the one DVD's had.
