man I was so riled up about the Wii a short time ago. but as time passes and nothing else but Zelda and Metroid Prime 3 sit on the horizon as worthwhile I'm seriously losing interest fast. I was spoiled by Nintendo when I got the SFC upon release. clearly that was a one off. only the Neo Geo and Dreamcast have ever since impressed me as much. I hate Nintendo on a budget.

I meant the G4, as it can run games with code made for the G4...

I wish nin would go back to mips. :(
even maybe the next DS be a low end 4000 like the psp just at a high clock rate.

The similarities between the G4 and the Gekko are not that many, unlike popular belief.

Subbie, the MIPS architecture for RISC processors left a bad taste in coder's mouths after the N64 and the EmotionEngineT (Lovely VU0,1 setup :p ). Evidently, all three next-gen consoles are PowerPC based because of the ease that this allows for at a basic level.

As far as portables go however, the power efficiency of the ARM series is tried and true. Actually, come to think of it, Hitachi's Super H series is ideal. The Sh4 (also found in the dreamcast), had many applications in consumer electronics. Using a modern variant of the SH4 (SH5 does a bit far too much for what a portable would need) nintendo would be on the right path for proper and managable firepower!

I would have to beg to differ. Mips did not leave a bad taste. Poor development of other parts left a bad taste. Nintendos shotty way to use the rcp & tmem pist devs off. Ps2 was over less then idea coding setup.

I've talked to a coder at work and he extensivly praises the ps3 archetech and has a rather nasty opinion of the 360 (they were valid issues, i just sadly dont remember enough detail on them). Psp has not left any bad taste in developers mouth. It's purely down to poor management from sony on the market and not development.

Arm I admit are good processors but I am not a fan of the arm9. Once people dump it for the arm10 or 11 then we will get somewhere but as is, the mips 4000 in the psp is a far better processor then the arm9.

I find it sad sony is the only company who still presses onward with the mips.

As far as I know the gekko is a cheap G4 with no VE

Hell yeah, in fact I dont remember ir I mentioned this before but I heard there's a group of guys making a GPX2-like console based on a SH CPU.

Wicked, I want one. I am heavly depressed with th gpx2. It's predisesor will still be using the same arm9 processor.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE. UPGRADE TO ARM10 OR ATLEAST ADD A floating point unit.

Yeah I remember the lack of FPU in the Zodiac's ARM9. If it werent for that, that thing could even run Quake2.

About those guys from the SH-portable, I went to the site, bad news: the project was terminated due to lack of interest from the [emulation&stuff)] community.

No wonder why, since apparently they started this around 2003 so when the PSP got the first homebrew stuff most of their possible buyers/investors got the fuck out of the project...

subbie, I have great respect for the theory behind the Ps3's architecture. It's like masterfully conducting an orchestra, whereas in the 360, each "instrument" is on its own until the coder syncs it. I expect solid results once second generation Ps3 titles are on the way. Still, both the Ps3 and 360 have PowerPC influences in the core of their design, not MIPS.

That said, I like MIPS myself, but then again, i m not the worker who has to bleed his fingers to make a living out of it, so my opinion wouldn't count anyway.
