http://www.gamespot.com/news/6233163.html according to this, Nintendo claims that the Wii Play bundle sold 23 million worldwide. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Mario 3 18 million worldwide? Makes me kinda sad inside. I could of understand if it was Modern Warfare 2 to make the record, but this? Thoughts?
and me too. Couldn't give a shit about the game disc. In fact I sold that the day I got it. According to UK Channel Five's Gadget Show, they say Wii Sports out sold Mario Bros on the FC / NES. Is this true? Yakumo
Wii Sports sales go hand in hand with Wii sales in most places (notably except Japan), as such it wouldn't be a surprise if it has sold more than Super Mario Bros
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games Not totally accurate but it gives a good idea. Truth be told I never thought the Super Mario Bros. record would ever be toppled.
Maybe it's because I'm more or less young, but I don't understand exactly the hype around the quality of the nes' mario games. It's obvious that all those sales are accumulated during an extreme long period and, in the case of the first mario, there wasn't many other games like that to play... So the sales can't reflect exactly if a game is that good... It was, in fact, a trend...
Besides the fact that they were pack-ins with NES consoles (which is the main reason why they sold so much,) the games are designed a step above other action platformers of the time. In Mario 3 for instance there's no "Dead space," as in every area of every level has something going on.
The fact is that sales do not reflect in any way the quality of ANY product mario bros huge sales are just a part of the mystical aura that the game owns
Yes, most people buy Wii play for the wiimote generally as a lot of the time it's the only choice they have. Wii sports is a pack in game and is not sold outside of Japan, where as Super Mario Brothers was sold and was packed in later. So it could be argured that Wii Sports is only the best selling game by default of it coming with the system. If you look at Japan, which rarely packs in games and look at overall games sales then you will see that Super Mario Brothers with over 6.8m sales is still the best selling game in Japan. Although Pokemon red/green/blue seems to have outsold it, I argue that they are three different games so none of them have sold more then 3.5m each. Top Ten sellings games in Japan (rounded to nearest .1m) 1 - Super Mario Bros (FC) 6.8m 2 - New Super Mario Bros (DS) 5.1m 3 - Brain Age 2 (DS) - 4.9m 4 - Animal Crossing Wild World (DS) - 4.5m 5 - Tetris (GB) - 4.2m 6 - Super Mario Land (GB) - 4.2m 7 - Dragon Quest VII (PS) - 4.1m 8 - Brain Age (DS) - 4.0m 9 - Dragon Quest IX (DS) - 4.0m 10 - Final Fantasy VII (PS) - 3.9m Non handhelds 1 - Super Mario Bros (FC) 6.8m 2 - Dragon Quest VII (PS) - 4.1m 3 - Final Fantasy VII (PS) - 3.9m 4 - Super Mario 3 (FC) - 3.8m 5 - Super Mario Kart (SFC) - 3.8m 6 - Dragon Quest III (FC) - 3.8m 7 - Dragon Quest VIII (PS2) - 3.7m 8 - Final Fantasy VIII (PS) - 3.6m 9 - Wii Sports (Wii) - 3.6m 10 - Super Mario World (SFC) - 3.6m Technically Wii Play is at 3.6m too but I discount that as a game and treat it more as hardware...
Wow, nintendo really have Japan by the balls in that top 10. I feel like being a nintendo fanboy has finally paid off - I was right in saying they're the best!
I don't think having high "sales" because the game is bundled with something is particularly impressive.
that's the thing, the numbers don't really show a "point", they just happen to be a mixed bag of different demographics at different time periods. Apples to oranges really.
Can anyone adjust for inflation so we can see the true figures how they compare to the 80s Nes launch with Super Mario Bros? They do the same thing with box office records for movies. I think Gone With the Wind still holds the record, if adjusted for inflation.
