    Miyamoto:

“I feel like people never really understood the concept behind Wii U and what we were trying to do,” he says. “I think the assumption is we were trying to create a game machine and a tablet and really what we were trying to do was create a game system that gave you tablet-like functionality for controlling that system and give you two screens that would allow different people in the living room to play in different ways. …. Unfortunately, because tablets, at the time, were adding more and more functionality and becoming more and more prominent, this system and this approach didn’t mesh well with the period in which we released it.”

The article does not state NX is coming out next year.

    Interesting read nonetheless.

To be fair, it would also be bad for business for them to announce too soon that a new console is coming out, because then who wants to buy a Wii U which will soon be unsupported?

The Wii U pad ruined the console in my opinion. I find myself going back to every single game that doesn't require it, as the pad is usually flat 99% of the time. What can we hope to get out of the system now- Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles, and some more Virtual Console games. Not even sure about the Fire Emblem anymore.

Nintendo will continue to be clueless as always, because all the old people still run it.

The Wii U isn't doing the greatest at the moment but the Wii in the previous generation destroyed the competition in terms of units sold. I have faith they can come back.

I'm still sad the Wii U never caught on, as it is a really neat console and the tablet can be gimmicky fun at times. However, there were many things wrong with it from a consumer perspective such as the confusing naming (Wii, Wii U, Wii Mini) making it difficult for non-gaming buyers to understand which console does what, and the high price jump from Wii (whose sticker was $250 on release) vs Wii U($300-$350 on release).

It's not that they're clueless, it's just that they want to make something that's not just a brick with microchips in it. Example: They went all out on the Wii and made fucking bank.
Although, on the contrary, I agree that the WiiU was a flop on release. It's definitely fun, and I thought that the tablet was a nice idea, but a combination of things like poor launch titles and no third party support wasn't good for sales. It's picking up now, but that's not gonna last long what with the NX coming out.

Yeah, the "Wii U" name was a terrible idea - to this day I've still talked to people who think the Wii U is the same as the Wii or have never heard of it. I've also often heard "Wii 2" from non-gamers as well, which would have made more sense than Wii U.

The Wii 2 was seemingly what they were trying to make. The inclusive of sensor/motion controls in the Wii? Now we have a tablet! I think they assumed both the passive and gamer fans of the original would hop onto what they believed would be their next innovation and it didn't pan out. While the sensor/motion controls of the Wii were necessary to a lot of games, the tablet isn't as important for a decent bit of Wii U games. Especially their heavy hitters, like Mario Kart 8 and SSB.

I seem to be one of the few who actually liked the controller, as being able to pick it up and play most games elsewhere was very good. What I didn't like, however, is how they essentially limited it to one per system, when the games somewhat needed it for certain things.

It was more the mismanagement, rather than the controller itself. Yet I think they did a lot of things right in other areas, like the Smash Bros DLC, Wii backwards compatibility, and Splatoon content, and knocking out voice chat a bit. The only major issues would be the controller limitations, still kinda walking slowly on online play, and mismanagement on certain games (like Metroid)

Mainly, it didnt have a major game to come out with it upon release. The Wii had Twilight Princess and shortly after release, Smash Bros Brawl. Also, it came with a game that really hit it off with everyone: Wii Sports. The Wii U didn't have that, and I didn't pick it up myself until I found a bundle (pro controller + New Super Mario Bros U + Wind Waker download) AND a game I really wanted was about to come out a week or so later (Mario Kart 8). I am quite satisfied with the system, but I tend not to jump to systems until there is something I know I'll play a lot on it.

I think "Super Wii" would have been a better name BTW.

I don't mind the Gamepad (though it's more than a bit cumbersome), if only it had a better range. I'd rather use a regular controller that works reliably from 15-20 feet away than the Wii U one which is finicky at best.

It took them until now to figure out that making a tablet looking device that is not a tablet is a bad business decision??

They are out of touch. They don't even have user purchase management like steam, where you can redownload purchases on any console.

They made a system with a controller so expensive, that when the 8 year old breaks it, mom and dad won't buy another and the system gets binned.

They made a console with no upgradeable storage.

They made a system that looks almost exactly like the old system, with the same name. This is like naming the xbox one the "Xbox 360 u" No one knows it is different.

It takes them 4-6 years to learn their own system to make games that fully use it's power. Every generation. The best games are always
at the end of the system life, when no one is buying games. Remember gamecube twilight princess?

They don't license their properties to other companies. They own hugely lucrative characters, yet they are too inept to even churn out one mario movie. They could make one mario movie a year and make BILLIONS.

This is because nintendo it your typical Japanese corporation where the hierarchy is utterly unquestionable, and the slow march to being bought by disney is already 90% complete at this point anyway.

I would agree, Yamauchi was always in favor of products which were fun. He never understood why the Gamecube wasn't well received.

Porting was a pain in the ass, and doing a three way design vs two, not many could afford to release on all three.

It didn't play dvds (big mistake) because nintendo was too cheap to pay the royalty on dvd. They even used a special disc to avoid royalties.

Oh man such cherished classics, am I right?

And movies aside, let's remember that Nintendo's not exactly had a good time with farming their properties out.

Aren't TP and Skyward Sword like the worst received games in the Zelda series, at least in recent memory? And are you really going to claim that Nintendo's the only company that takes time to realize the power of their console?

So do external harddrives not count?

will you people just shut the fuck up about the alleged "Nintendo NX". It's fake and will never be coming out so stop losing your shit about it
it's just like when people thought the new xbox was going to be the Xbox 720 or when people thought that sega was going to come back to making consoles again

It's just a codename dude, just like "project reality" or "dolphin" we aren't saying that the new console is going to be called the NX. And yes it will be possibly coming out in a couple of years.

Yeah, the only reason the Xbox got ports was because it had an easy to use architecture (it was basically a PC in a box). The PS2 was so bloody successful that putting games on it was a requirement pretty much.

Also I heard the GC disc was because Nintendo was terrified of piracy (another reason the N64 used carts instead of CDs)
