It's been a while since I bothered checking out Virtual Console so it came as a surprise to see that Nintendo have finally gotten off their arse and brought arcade gaming to the Wii download service. So far there's only classic Namco and Sega titles but with Namco bringing the likes of Star Blade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YduVNycqM9Y to the Wii it's only time (fingers crossed) until we see the likes of arcade Ridge Racer and maybe even Rave Racer and what about Sega's Daytona USA? Yeah, I know..... it will probably never happen but at least I can dream Yakumo
I heard a recent patch finally allows you to play VC games off the SD card too. Still, it's not nearly enough for me to start playing Wii again after letting it gather dust for months.
I read about the Virtual arcade somewhere the other day and as long as they get the right kind of games on it like the ones yakumo sugegsted then it could be pretty good.
Its cool that they are doing this now. I hope they move on up from really old arcade games we can get in other compilations. I hope sega tries touching model 1-3 arcade games and namco some of their System 11/12 stuff.
Is the Wii even remotely powerful enough to emulate Model 1-3? I think at least Model 3 is way too taxing.
The SD card update is lame. It doesn't actually run anything from the SD slot. Instead it silently copies your VC game into flash (Must have space for it), then executes your selected title. As you can expect, after doing this many times you'll start wearing out the Flash memory from the constant deleting and writing.
I was prety dissapointed with the update as well. I was so excited when it came out and then I downloaded it, tried to start a game and got a "not enough room error." Still, it's better thanthe alternative.
OK, I guess it was too good to be true. Damn, I almost regret buying a Wii these days, and the only console I have truly regretted buying 'til now is the PSP :banghead:
If we're going to be getting3-d arcade games on the wii, I'd love to see Gunblade N.Y. I remember playing it at an arcade as a kid and fully expecting it to come out for the Saturn, but it never did. :crying:
I love arcade games, it's all I usually get on PSN, original or remake - a good bet for people like me to spend money to feel the flashback I look forward to an official arcade stick controller.
Model 1 emulation would be a doddle for the Wii as probably would model 2. Model 3 on the other hand is like trying to run a Dreamcast on the Wii. Probably not going to happen. Don't forget, these arcade emulations are made by real skilled programmers who work for the biggest japanese software houses. Not some guy in his bedroom banging away on his PC like the home brew emulators we see. Yakumo
The big Namco 3D games of Starblade, Souvalou and the some coming Cybersled have been converted to a number of platforms so I can see the Wii games being nothing more then Wii specific versions of the source code they use for the various mobile phone games as the System 21 board had more DSPs, CPUs and other hardware then you could could shake a stick at and the Wii would probably die trying to run it, run Starblade in Mame to see what I mean... So wouldn't hold your breath for any game that Namco or Sega haven't converted to other platforms. Although would you want to play daytona usa by holding the wiimote sideways in your hand the same way Mario Kart does (badly...)
Uh, the Classic Controller? If Daytona can play well on a Saturn pad then it should be good on the CC as well. Personally, I wish Sega would take this opportunity to finally release ports of OutRunners and the arcade Golden Axe II.
Mario Kart has wank controls for a racer. Excite Trucks is very good and Need for Speed pro something or other (the one played on racer tracks rather than streets) has amazing controls very close to actual arcade games. I was very impressed and that's saying something since I can't stand gimmicky controls. To be honest though, if Daytona or Ridge Racer came out they'd be analogue compatible due to the nature of the original games. Meaning that classic controller and Game Cube controller support which isn't bad at all. Yakumo
Oh yes please!! But don't you mean Revenge of Death Adder when you say Golden Axe 2? And what about other cool System32 conversions? Arabian Fight anyone?
Stuff like daytona usa have a better chance showing up on xbox live arcade seeing as how outrun 2 got a release on it as well as next weeks virtua on, which is based on the arcade version.
Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. I always thought it was called Golden Axe 2, but apparently it was just The Revenge of Death Adder. Thanks to licensing issues, Daytona doesn't really have that much of a chance to show up anywhere...maybe under a different name.
Ooh! Ooh! And I've always wanted to play Planet Harriors! Maybe some console will pick that up some day (a person can dream)? Why that was never brought home I'll never know.
While we're still dreaming, I'd like a port of After Burner Climax and Virtua Cop 3 too. The latter should actually be doable on the Wii, since Ghost Squad was ported and it used the same hardware.
