It says in the fact sheet is has only wireless and ethernet is only via usb 2.0 add on like wii. They must be stupid.
This is significant... why? Wireless routers are dirt cheap these days. Are there a lot of people using wired-only routers?
Because Wi-Fi is garbage. I prefer a cable connection over Wi-Fi any day... hate it when videos or pages won't load just because the connection was lost for a second.
Where I am wifi is so saturated and so many conflicting signals it doesn't work at all on half the channels if even then. If you have 40+ routers all fighting for the same channels it causes problems.
You would be surprised how many people don't use wired connections AT ALL. When I was working at Best Buy we could hardly keep the Wireless adapters in stock for bluray players/smart TVs. Same reason Microsoft built Wi-Fi into the 360 Slim. I would say a vast majority of this forum is very technologically capable. We are not the majority. People want less cables - in any way possible. People are confused by HDMI cables (you don't want to know how many times I had to explain that to use an HDMI cable on the 360 - you remove the composite/component cable and THEN it will fit). People are retarded, and would rather have wireless. Nintendo isn't out of touch with reality in this regard - they understand this part of the general public. I don't agree with many of their business decisions but this one is logical.
Eh, seems all the points of argument thus far have been pretty solid, don't think it'd be too much out of the way for them to make a wired connection possible without the use of another device. If necessary I suppose the usb adaptor works just as well though.
Still, why not give the option to consumers? I have a wireless router, but both my PC and PS3 are wired. There's lots of issues with wi-fi during updates / online gaming on PS3 (at least what i've read). I only use wi-fi for my android phone. And i don't think i'll ever use wireless for my home PC.
It does NOT really matter honestly. The netcoding in modern games (at least for competitive ones) is still crappy that you are going to get lag and all kinds of frustrating issues no matter what. Plus doesn't it support Nwireless? If it did that would obviously help since it's on a different band. I'm more worried about the next Xbox using different wireless for it's controllers because the current 360 controllers wireless SUCK. Nothing but constant disconnects with all the 360 wireless controllers i've used. Never a single disconnect or issue with systems that use bluetooth like the Wii or PS3 even though it still operates near the 2.4ghz band.
Wi-Fi only is a poor Option IMO. Why not just add a eithernet port. They aren't expensive. I have Wi-Fi in my home however the PC, 360, BluRay and TV are all wired. Only my laptop, phone and the Wii in the livingroom run on Wi-Fi. Wired is the only choice when it come to online gaming as well. I even use the wire for my360 pad because I noticed input lag while playing 2D shooters.
I completely agree and that's kind of what I was driving at. I don't think it'd be too much effort to make it so that the wired option is built in. I've played wireless and wired ranging from PC to PS3, and I've always found wired to have a more solid connection. Of course this doesn't apply to everyone... but given the fact we're paying for the product we should be able to have it set to our preference be it wired or wireless.
Exactly. Most people don't even know what an Ethernet cable is. I can see why this is a problem for some people, as I had frequent problems with the wireless in the dorm I used to live in. I don't have any problems with my current setup, but I use a wired connection for my PC, 360, and PS3 because my PC and 360 don't have wireless capability, and because the connection is slightly - just slightly - faster on all 3. So I understand why this might trouble you. However, I think only a tiny fraction of Nintendo's target audience actually care about this. So I can understand why they might do that. I also think that the people who really care about this will probably be willing to pay the extra $20 or whatever for the adapter. I mean, people pay hundreds for DC broadband adapters these days. I think that if you would let such a small detail completely dissuade you from buying a console... well, that's kinda stupid.
quite shocking when you think something as cheap as the Raspberry Pi includes a built in ethernet port for the low price it sells for, personally I only use Wifi for my phone and laptop etc. and everything else (TV, Xbox, PS3, Servers etc. etc.) are all on wired connections, wireless is great when it works but when its having an off moment it just becomes useless, hopefully they will change this but since this is how the Wii came im not holding my breath
Same here, barely use wifi, except for netbook (and netbook is mostly wired at home) and PSP. Also my home LAN is 1Gbit.
That should be everyone's opinion! How could they exclude a simple port? & definitely! I feel the input lag hard, my friends say it isn't even there... even when they try both the wired and wireless... maybe my senses are superior? Ha. I still don't understand wireless game pads... for something like the Wii, obviously necessary. PS3 Controller or 360 Controller? Not at all IMO. Everything about it screams worse to me... Batteries, Input Lag, Weight (yeah, weak complaint, but wired pads are as light a a feather). How does the cord bother anyone? & When would you be far enough from your TV that the controller wouldn't reach? I don't understand the obsession for no wires! I want giant tangled messes dammit! =]
Any UK ISP's worth their salt give you decent free wifi routers, it's pretty much the standard these days. Yes wired is always superior, but a USB adapter will set you back a few pounds/dollars, big deal.
I'm using Wi-Fi for all consoles at the moment, not that I have choice though and I do dislike Wi-Fi just hate the amount of "Lost Connection" when clearly I'm still online, all because my phone get's a notification on the same channel. This is pretty horrible to hear about, and I wouldn't surprised if the new XBOX or Playstation will not have Ethernet cause every piece of technology that comes out has to be wireless, hell I don't even like wireless controllers...
