I too am in a building with access to nearly 50 wireless signals, and no matter what channel I pick I often get dropouts affecting all my devices. It's truly annoying, which is why I stick to the hard line wherever possible. I'm about ready to add a router to my existing wired/wireless modem just to get the extra ethernet.

For Nintendo to leave out such a basic (and surely cheap) component out of their next-generation platform is utterly mind-boggling.

How many of you were complaining about the 20GB PS3 without Wifi back in 2006?
    Just curious...

I don't see this as a problem. I don't know anybody that uses wired connections anymore and here in Canada, any ISP gives you a wireless router for free with their service and if you can't get that for some reason, the thrift stores are loaded with them! You can get a brand new router someone didn't use from their ISP for like $5.

Nintendo probably saw how common wireless is, how little their usb ethernet adapters for the Wii sold, how little complaints they got about it and decided to save some money. Yes, an ethernet port would only cost Nintendo a few cents per console, but when you are building millions of machines, any savings help. It adds up quickly.

I see why they would do it, but I would still prefer built-in ethernet.
    USB 2.0 add-on? Why not USB 3.0?
Ethernet is way faster than what USB supports, so even using this add-on will not provide the same speed as built-in ethernet... fuck logic.

Wired is the only way to go and with Powerline adapters it's now even easier to get a comparable connection in terms of speed and reliability all around your house without a whole mess of cabling. Wifi imo is only good for those few devices that really need it i.e. tablets, phones, netbooks and in certain situations laptops.

Not a single device in my home uses wired ethernet. But I guess if I had to, I would just get a cheap USB Ethernet dongle. Problem solved! Crisis Averted!

Wifi is honestly not the greatest thing in the world , I ran ethernet cables from my computer room to all parts of the house just to have 100% the best connection possible. I prefer hard wired for all my consoles that except it. If the Wii U does not come with it then so be it but it would be a huge plus if it did.

Agreed.. On topic though, I think it's a bit pathetic that a company would leave out such a basic and cheap component.. The only devices I use wifi for is my 3DS, PSP, Galaxy S Vibrant, laptop, and my Wii (Only because I'm forced to)

That appears to be a common thing anymore, doesn't it Kronos? Companies will find an excuse to leave out just about anything. That little bit shaved off the cost will mean a lot to them, I'm sure of it.

I have a 6 mb connection from att(btw att sucks) anyhow with my ethernet cable I get a ping of 30ms and with wifi I get a 42ms connection. My wireless router has to pass through 3 walls and a floor to get to me considering its in the basement which is on the other side of my house. Wifi is not all that bad , And 42ms ping isn't that bad its manageable in css.

That's wonderful - for you. It's not so much a matter of Wi-Fi being purely garbage. A lot of different people have different experiences with it. Although that pretty much applies to everything, ranging from movies to effects of medicine. I know a few people who swear by Wi-Fi and think it's the best thing since sliced bread. While myself and a few others I know have sworn against it for similar reasons to what's been posted. It's seems really situational, it just comes down to whatever works for you and your preferences.

A bicycle is not that bad either. And it's possible to cross 1200 miles on bicycle. But i think you'll prefer a car or at least a bus for that. Like i said before, my home LAN is 1Gbit and my internet connection is 100Mbit. There's no wifi routers/cards that can go full 100Mbit, not to mention 1Gbit.

Also wifi isn't so secure. When you need to google something in cafe - it's fine. But i don't like idea of broadcasting all my internet traffic to the half of the street. And things like CFL lamps, mobile phones can make your connection as bad as 56K dialup was - constant disconnects etc.

Jesus Christ, I will use ethernet. Cause there is no way in hell. I want to have a wifi (not even a secure one) when in fact I already have a kickass wired connection, and if I need another connection I just put another cable in my hubswitch for my internet. So fuck wifi. alphagamer knows what I am talking about. Cause he was shocked when he used my internet back in the day. Since it is bloody fucking fast.

My Wi-Fi doesn't even reach my front door... or when it does it's extremely weak. However I can pick up everyone else's Wi-Fi :)
