Hello, This is my first time posting here about an issue that will happen soon. I have my original Pokemon Yellow cartridge and I have not replaced the battery yet. I would like to keep my save data (for nostalgia reasons), but I know when I replace the battery, I'll lose it. Right now, my pokemon that were on the game have been transferred over to Pokemon Stadium. It was meant to be a temporary fix if my battery died while I was at College. I decided that I need to fix it before I lose my data unexpectedly and I'm not mentally prepared for it (I played this game over a course of several very difficult years in my childhood and a lot of memories are attached to the pokemon). I had two different methods I thought of: 1: Change the battery and lose my save data. I don't know if I could get my Pokemon out of Pokemon Stadium, though (because I'm not sure if it logs game versions). I haven't been able to test this with hardware or emulators because I don't have another 1 Generation pokemon game and my laptop is slow. 2: Acquire money magically and back up my save data on my computer and then change the battery. Method 1 will work for my purposes (since, I'm a poor college kid) but I'm not sure if my dear pokemon will be stuck on Pokemon Stadium for that carts battery life. Any advice? I'm sorry this is so convoluted. Thank you. ^_^
You can transfer your pokemon to and from pokemon stadium freely. Method 1 will work if all you want are your pokemon to be backed up/preserved.
This is probably the best way to do it. I just tried the Stadium method and lost a Pokemon in the process.
Solder up a second battery on wires. change the first battery, desolder the added battery. Simple as that.
Thank you everyone! I forgot about asking about that method. It will probably be the one I use because I needed some verification it wouldn't kill my cart by overloading the cart (? I wasnt sure this was possible, but I didn't want to risk it). Thank you for everyone that gave me their ideas. ^_^
well, i can dump the save data on your cartridge to my pc and e-mail it to you if you send it to me, but it might not be worth for you to pay for both ways shipping.
The easiest way to back up the save is with a Mega Memory Card, there usually only a few quid on eBay.
I used a Gameboy Transferer 2, you can dump your save along with a rom of the cart if you wish. After you can use the save perfectly in an emulator or simply send it back to the cart once the battery has been changed. Read: How to backup GameBoy and GameBoy Colour save games from retail cartridges
