you could still use ubuntu if you wanted you could use it with gnome classic, xfce or kde, you're not tied to unity, you just need to install the other desktop enviroments, you can pick which one you want when you log in. when/if steam linux version finally makes it to the end user you should be able to run it no matter what distribution you're using, ubuntu, mint, arch, suse, fedora.
open usc, in the search bar type xubuntu and when it shows xubuntu desktop environment click install You may have to enter your password, when its finished install log out of your account, click the cog and select xfce
Imo unity is fine as long as you use a lot of shortcut, which you should do anyway as a mouse is slow and unefficient. I like its search features, but I think gnome3 got something similar. Anyway beside the now missing lower screen bar I don't notice unity as I use keyboad for almost everything. For the leaner browser you can find, try links, if you want a graphical interface, midori is a known one, but I never used it myself.
thanks for the hints! i always thought it might break something when i try to fiddle with the desktop environment, i had this in the past when i tryd to switch from gnome to kde once....:X but anyway, the biggest thing i dont like about unity is that the toolbars are not in the window, but instead in the top bar from the desktop, that kinda breaks the "flow" for me.
yeah i agree with the toolbar issue, if you have a big screen or using thegimp or similar programs then it can be a pain. as for mice being slow and inefficient i disagree. i dont like the search feature and dont use they keyboard much other then for typing and gaming. i like the search option being there if i want to search for something but dont like it being the main interface.
Just use Gnome 3 Shell over Unity (In Ubuntu: "sudo apt-get install gnome-shell"). It takes all the best features of having a "next generation" desktop, without all the junk Unity shoves at you to make the experience feel like a "Toy" or "Tablet". A good example you mentioned was the tool bars: Under Gnome Shell they are still tied to the windows themselves, and not push to the top like in Unity. Why they did that in Unity is beyond me (>_<); I was a hardcore Gnome 2 user, but after using Gnome 3 for a short while I quickly understood what they were trying to do and now I love it. Having to go back to the traditional task bar feels so much slower! In regards to Valve, if they support Ubuntu they'll indirectly support Mint since they are supposed to be directly compatible with each other, so I wouldn't worry about it. But there's nothing really different that both distros can't do. Just go with whatever you like and configure it to behave how you want.
just installed ubuntu 12.04 as single os on my brand new pc, i use gnome 3 now, but i had to add minimize and maximize buttons, but so far, i'm very satisfied with ubuntu 12.04! it feals much better with gnome 3 then unity. just cant wait for the steam for linux release :/
Well, it will be the public price, so you'll be able to buy one for this price too. Concerning W8, i don't pay it so i don't know the price
I'm still running a 6 year old Macbook with 1 gig of RAM. D': My next computer will be a desktop with Windows 8.
I'll likely be a Mac user til the day I die. But i'll also be a hater of Apple support until the day I die. The Apple Care plan is worse than the worst insurance company, they will do anything to get out of coughing up money or a replacement. I had a scare recently because I thought the fans had died on my new MBA (turned out to be a bug in 10.8.1) but I was shitting myself as I thought I'd have to go through the Apple support song and dance. As for Windows, I have it installed for the odd game but christ it's a nightmare, 2 hours of restarts waiting for updates to go in when I installed it, then there's the issue of it taking up so much space on a fresh install. It creates a hibernation file equal to your RAM size. I dedicated 20Gb to Windows on my bootcamp partition which was generous on a 128Gb SSD and pretty much all of it was gone even after I cleared out the system restore saves and disabled hibernation via CMD prompt. I was pretty happy with XP but which fucktard at MS decided it was a good idea to change the name and location of almost everything in the 7?; in particular the control panel. Apple have their faults but at least they're consistent across the OS versions as to not alienate existing customers. Windows 8 is likely to die a death with general consumers, I tried a copy and metro just confused the hell out of me....get the fuck out of the way and show me my desktop.
metro is horrible. its aimed at touch screen devices terrible for keyboard and mouse use as a general desktop interface. even unity is better then metro. windows 8 will be nowhere near any of my systems thankfully.
It's an attempt create uniformity between Xbox, PC's, Tablets and Windows Phones so as to establish a strong brand name. Outlook has been completely rebooted as part of it and im unsure about those MP3 devices microsoft make but they probably will be too.
LOL, no. Zune is dead, they're even getting rid of the name. Portable media players don't make much sense anymore since so many use their phones for that, and the Zune was never very successful.
If you know what you're doing on a computer, then you don't need anti-virus or any of that other shit. However, to test unknown programs, use a virtual PC with all that virus stuff installed or use an online scanner. Problem with Ubuntu and Linux is that you basically can't play any games and people are scared off because they do not know how to control Unix and think their programs will not work from Windows.
I have using mac since the late 90's and its been good to me. Apple support has always helped to resolve my problems. Check out their great support forums.
How would you know you don't have a virus? You don't have anti virus... (SUPER DRAMATIC) All that's coming to an end. GABE "MOTHERFUCKING" NEWELL
