This is one of the reasons I never bothered with WinXP. In the last two years I've changed my graphics card, added a HDD, changed another HDD, added a DVD-ROM drive (yes, I never had one till now! :smt042), changed modems, removed the modem totally (don't need none of that narrowband crap any more!), changed CPU, added a TV card, added an NIC, changed NIC... there's probably something I'm forgetting... and Win2k never bitched about any of that! Then again, my version never asked for a key in the first place :smt023 Screw MS - you actually paid for your copy, so just get a crack or whatever.
yeah, off of kazaalite i got both key generators (well at least for older versions of window) and just text files containing many keys. just another solution you could try :smt083
Well, yer not supposed to keep reinstalling, hehe. If you have the need to do so, ghosting is better. If you're going to replace a critical component like a hard drive, yeah its gonna ask cuz the hard drive could've been put in a new machine! You'll probably find, if you think about it, that your hardware configuration change list is quite big, even if you don't realise it (i think it is fairly petty and saves ALL devices, even plug 'n' pray). It is a 5 minute call that not only solves the problem quickly, effortlessly, and freely (freephone number), but resets it so you won't get the message on the next install! It is called anti-piracy measures. Write your own program, have loadsa spotty oiks pirate it and see how YOU feel.
Anti-piracy my ass. Google windows crack and you'll get thousands of options to easily bootleg their O/S. Windows has absolutely sad protection. If you dealt with this program called Staad, you'd know what I talked about. Holy hell, the people who make that were paranoid. :angry
Yeah, just do the phone activation. I had purchased a copy of Windows XP for the old laptop I had, and then when I sold the laptop and built a desktop, I reinstalled the same copy of XP - technically, I think that's not allowed, but no way in hell am I buying another copy of XP. Having reinstalled XP a time or two on the laptop, I was greeted with the problem of having activated too many times. I called tech support, and they had me right as rain within 10 minutes. Try phone activation first, then try tech support. As draconian as the OS' restrictions are on activation, the techs are surprisingly understanding and helpful.
another thing is the net activation never worked. if it works I wouldn't mind but calling the not-toll free numbe and keying in all those number isn't my kind of fun... well I'm not into s&m you know... :smt043 cheers
Dang, the number isn't toll-free there? Ouch. I've never had a problem with online activation, personally - the only time I had to do it by phone, aside from the laptop-to-desktop incident I mentioned before, was during a total reformat where I was stuck at my parents' place with no internet. It's a bit of a pain to do, but it's not like you have to do it on a weekly or even monthly basis - at least, one would hope not.
The states are spoiled, bigtime. Local calls are free, and even though the phones are crap, mobile phone calls are cheap as well.
And I suppose they get decent broadband as well? The best I can get is 512k(download)/128k(upload) ADSL, and it's €40 a month, and it's SHIT!
no cable? my house is wired with optic fibre cable ONLY. I can't get ADSL even if I want since there is no phone line from street... :-(
I have cable, but it's analogue ass going through 20-year-old co-ax. They've been digging up half the roads and pavements in Limerick for the last 5 years putting in fibre-optic cables, but God knows where it's all going...
I thought the black helicopters was only here in the 'states. :smt043 I'm on pretty decent internet here - just upgraded from 128k upload to 256k (with my bill only jumping about $3 per month) and the download is 3-5mbit depending on the time... But not everywhere in the 'states is like this - my parents live in an area devoid of anything but dialup (or satellite, but who gets that?), and due to the age of the landlines, they are limited to 28k - though it rarely ever goes above 20k. It's hell going back there for holidays and such. :smt022
