as some of you may know my old man sent me the latest Samsung notebook with 17" widescreen... pretty nifty albeit bit bigger in dimension given the screen size... bought Netgear MIMO wireless router on Saturday and spent all night to figure out how to replace my old wired router with the wireless one.. finally succeeded after few hours of scratching head... Now missus can surf the web while sitting at the back yard while watching our kid playing... anyhow, does anyone know how to set up the home network so she can access the music and video file on her PC at the study room? I fiddled with the setting and services but so far the notebook can see the our home network, she named it as Neko-chan (-_- ; but cannot see any PC under that network... anything I need to do to make this happen? All PC are running WinXP... TIA cheers
The easiest thing to do would be to share those folders and give your wife/yourself permissions to those shares. After you share the folders, they will show up when you select that PC under your Workgroup. Are you running XP Pro or Home? Home has limited network/security features, but you should still be able to share out those folders and access the shares via the Workgroup. ^_^_^
hmm... I did that already but nothing shown up... now remembering that I stopped number of service calls few months back to cut out the attack on my network... now I cam't remember which ones I stopped and what not... is there a web site that deals with misx up wired/wireless home network in layman's term? and I'm running XP Home since neither Dell nor Smasung were generous enough to provide the XP Pro.. TIA
Here is a great site for services and XP setup: http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/WindowsXP.htm Do a search on M$ site for Home Networking or Home Network Setup. They have some pretty good walk throughs on how to share files, enable wireless services etc. (Can't remember the URLs at the moment) ^_^_^
cheers mate I will have a look at M$ site at lunch time or when I get home... missus wants to play her MP3 collection from her PC - one of the reason I got her convinced to get wireless MIMO router... So I need to sort this out fast... (thing men do to get their missus satisfied...)
Just share the folders and make sure internet folder sharing is enabled on both. That does the trick, unless Windows' pissy ass firewall gets in the way.
Do you mean 'Simple File Sharing'? If the PCs are in the same WG and the shares are online, this option shouldn't be needed. I was on a similar setup at a friends house the other day. I joined the WG, he shared the files and I was able to see his PC and access the shares. ^_^_^
the network setup was bit mess... it's amalgamation of Mac/Win using router on cable ISP... they are all in the same work group - neko-chan - and Mac and WinXP PC can see each other - though for some reason I can't seem to access WinXP PC from Mac anymore - probably sue to some changes I made long time ago and now forgot what they were... Anyway, WinXP Notebook since it's on the same workgroup but using wireless should be able to see but all but all it can see is the workgroup name with nothing underneath... ??? anyhow I will give a go tonight so she can get off my back and do her stuff at the family room while I use her WinXP PC at the study... and my kid busy dancing to the wiggles or hi-five on our HT...he he
ok this is driving me nut! the wireless router has been setup and works fine but every time I tried to change the name of router to something else - I gave it some silly name - it will loose internet connection and only way to recover is hardware reset of router and set up from the start... as long as I don't change the name of router everything is fine... any idea why? this is driving me nut - coz I can leave the router at the current name but "pussycat_01" doesn't sounds that good now come to think of...
What do you mean the name of the router? The SSID? That is because you are making a change to the network! You have to change the SSID, save the change, and reboot the router. Then, if you have WEP, change the SSID on the machines. As for the network, are we talking 2 XP machines? If so, do the following: Run network wizard on both - make sure both have the same workgroup, e.g. MSHOME. Remember to name them sensibly! Right click on the connection to the network (e.g. Wireless Connection), within My Network Places, and click Properties. Click Install... Clock Protocol, then Add. Select IPX and install it. Do the same on the other machine(s) Enable file sharing on whatever folders you want available (right click the folder... Sharing...) You may have to reboot. You should now find the computers show up in My Network Places. Also, you can access them by opening Internet Explorer and going to: \\MACHINENAME (where MACHINENAME is the name of the machine you want access to). Don't ask me why, but they don't seem to show up without IPX!
No I mean the account name setting of router itself... SSID is different and there's no problem updating/changing... ??? like I said it drives me nut but I can leave with it though... I suppose for setup setting, when I run Setup Home or Office Network on wired WinXP PC I lost the internet connection and I had to hardware rest the router and setup from the start again... I will try to install IPX tonight as it's not there.... thanks for the suggestion mate.
If all else fails (although you shouldn't have to do this), manually assign IP addresses. Your router should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 No need to thank me, if it works, sending your Saturn prototype to me will be thanks enough hehehe
Any luck with this setup? So the router died when you tried setting up a 'Home/Office Network' in XP? Basically you have both computers connected to the router surfing the web. These can see each other, but the shares on the hard wired PC inside are not viewable, correct? What are the permissions of the shares? ^_^_^
the permission is for read only... the problem is wireless notebook can see the home network but cannot see the individual PC - there are thee PC inc. one Mac running at home. btw notebook is running WinXP Pro while two PC are running WinXP Home and Mac is running system 9 (yep PMac's almost 7 years old and still going strong) I'm planning to get network storage HDD eventually - I know it's easy way out but given lack of time at home to fiddle with I can't spend any more time on this... besides every time internet connection went down missus get pissed...
