The Gamecube's problem was the controller and the discs. The hardware was very capable and easily kept up with or surpassed the competition. Games developed for the console were great, but the two points mentioned pained developers that had multi platform titles and probably discouraged them from making exclusive titles directly or indirectly.

Here is a feature smartphones can't (well not can't but they don't) duplicate, a fucking d-pad and buttons. Seems to me real controls still lack of these devices. You could play SMB or better yet Battletoads with some half assed control scheme on some phone very well. What exactly did you have in mind that the phones can't duplicate? Having a 3D screen gimmick? They sure could. Tilt sensor? Why not. What they aren't going to likely do is drop in powerful gaming hardware with decent controls, for a phone. That's what a handheld should be.

Ofcourse the Gameboy vs Game Gear showed that something cheaper with better battery life may be the better choice. But both were actual handhelds that were all about games and whatever technology level they could fit into a handheld. I don't fault Nintendo for not putting really expensive hardware in the 3DS. But I do for them trying to charge $250 for it initially. And I fault them for driving the price of the unit up with those dumb "innovative features" like the cameras and gyroscope and 3d display.

I don't really believe the 3DS is a failure like some people do. But I don't believe it will achieve the level of success the DS and older systems enjoyed.

I also don't believe the "tablets" and other goofy devices actually will replace true handhelds for portable gaming in any capacity other than mini-games and other casual type games and perhaps for games that don't need critical input such as strategy and non-critical timed puzzle games.

This is my dead 3ds, the only sign of life from the machine is the blue power led that's it...also shown is the reciept which shows it's just over 2 months old.

Nintendo hardware will never go away so long as there's a material demand for Nintendo software, which is not playable anywhere else.

The reason I like Nintendo hardware is because it's tailored to their 1st party software at the expense of usability for anything else. Anything third party is always an afterthought, look at the N64 controller. This is what I love about it, and that kind of "stem to stern" experience isn't available on a mobile phone. I like specialization, and I like my 3DS.

That said, they won't be the juggernaut that they used to be.

No Nintendo hardware makes sense as an "only system" purchase, if you're not at peace with ONLY playing 1st party stuff on it, maybe 5-6 games per generation tops, don't buy it.

Mario 3D Land sorely tempts me to get a 3DS. I want(ed) it to fail.

I hate the design of the system. It is ugly compared to the DSlite- their most beautiful design ever imo. I want to wait for a 3DSlite if only for sleeker looks.

IMO Nintendo need to lower the RRP of 3DS games (I'd be okay with £20) and offer an App store of their own. Get Angry Birds on there, and other iOS favourites- plus offer retro classics that people clamour for that are updated and can be paused and resumed and any point.

In other words, combine what is great about true portable gaming (physical buttons, deep games) with accessible options for people who want quick casual games. Encourage developers to flock to the 3DS with their own 99p titles that have controls impossible on iOS.. and revamp the interface for gods sake.

Who didn't see from the beginning that the 3ds would die. Isaw it from the first time the developer were talking about it.
