I don't plan to buy anything after current gen, and as a collector not too many current gen games have long term appeal for me because of all the patches and whatnot, don't really want to be buying broken games 10 years down the road when the download servers are long gone.

Afaik OXM disc's had or used to have patches on them...
I suppose so long as a disc doesn't need to be bookable it would somehow work...

This generation of games is far from shit. You just need to look harder.

I don't know if I think it's going to hell, in my opinion it's pretty much the same as it's always been; there are loads of crap games, a bunch of enjoyable ones, and a few masterpieces here and there.

If you're referring to the debate about activation mechanisms to prevent second hand sales, or content on disc that you have to pay an additional sum to unlock, rest assured that they would have done exactly the same back in the old days if they only had the technology to do so. Hell, if I remember it right, Nintendo's swedish general agent, Bergsala, (which basically was Nintendo's bitch) actively tried to put small second hand shops out of business by starting legal processes against them, probably hoping their owners would give in without a fight, out of fear of not being able to handle the costs. They were just as dirty back then.

I do however miss the way games worked back in the 8- and 16 bit days; just slam the cart in, hit the power switch, and five seconds later you were playing. Now it's waiting for the console to boot, fiddle around some with discs taking care to not scratch them, wait for game to load, watch a bunch of unskippable completely unnecessary company logos, load savegame, load level, yadda yadda. It's somewhat of a project to play a game nowadays.

And yes, I tend to like 2D games better. I will probably do so until there's a way to project a true 3D world, and we aren't stuck with 3D worlds projected on 2D screens anymore. However, it seems like most people disagree with me, as new 2D games are pretty scarce nowadays. I'm so glad I have my old systems to take to for that.

Crap, I'm this close to start ranting about what I thought (and still think) of Nintendos decision to bring the Metroid and Zelda series into the 3D era just because they could and not because it made anything better, so I better stop now...

Probably my old boss was right when he said "it wasn't better before, but it was nicer!"

Same here. You say you play a 360 then everyone thinks you play nothing but stupid shitty war based FPS games. See how many war based FPS games there are in my 360 collection.

Sadly not. The 360 is seriously lacking in side scrolling platformers on physical media. loads on Xbox live though.

Your picture has Sonic 2006 in it. That doesn't help your cause.

But I do agree that games haven't gotten any worse, in fact in a lot of ways they've just gotten better. The things I like most about this era of gaming are that people actually play fighting games again/fighting games are actually released, and that more obscure genres like 2D shooters and weird stuff like Child of Eden are actually given more of a chance and not released only in Japan. This was definitely not the case in, say, the 1995-2000 period, which was probably the worst time for video games in recent memory.

Label the Mass Effects as RPGs and Crackdown 2 and RDR as sandbox games and you've got less 3rd person action too :livid:

I do have quite a bit of FPS games, I REALLY do like them. But it's not ALL I play. When MegaMan 9 came out I took a day off work for it! Worst part, is this kid used to live down the street. I've known him since he was 6 years old and we used to play BOMBERMAN together. We traded shit on Animal Crossing and Pokemon. But now he plays Wii & PC (and isn't on my Steam friends list) so how the HELL does he come to the conclusion that I only play FPS titles?

I always wonder if there were discussions like this by people from the Atari/Coleco era when the PS1 came out.

49 to be exact, Xbox games don't count as I could say I have 500 games for my PS3 if I add PS and PS2 games... :p

Interesting to note how many Xbox 360 games you do have once you take out all the games which are not exclusive...

Yes. When I was in the 3rd grade (1996) and given my own AOL account, there were a ton of GeoCities sites and their chat rooms dedicated to the NES. That's when I started collecting NES games.

I doubt I'll ever go retro-only, but I do find myself buying fewer and fewer new games. I still buy lots of old games - I now have a total of 305 games, up 94 from when I last counted about a year ago (211). Also, most of the newer games I get are either ports, remakes, or sequels to older games. I just got the Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns Arcade Hits Pack for Wii, and man is that a fun game.

I have so many games now that I could live on the ones I already have for quite some time. I have quite a few games that I've only played once or twice, plus lots of games that I've beaten before but would love to beat again. I won't stop buy new games or old games, but it all depends on what interests me.
