Us Gamers we tend to lean towards Asian food as our Cusine of choice. I my self Love Thai food, Chinese, Sushi and Singapore Chicken Rice. The link here is reviews for what may very well have been the worst Pan Asian joint to ever open near a university campus. http://brown.dailyjolt.com/food/details.html?PHPSESSID=19ac28beefd30533a1348bf43f6dfdc3&id=37
Here in Sacramento we have a great family owned Thai restaurant called Thai Basil, an excellent chain of Chinese restaurants called Fat's, and unfortunately only one sushi restaurant worth mentioning: Taka's Sushi Yes I love them all! ~Krelian
Rhode Island has it's places too http://theredginger.com/ AMAZING authentic HK eating. http://brown.dailyjolt.com/food/details.html?id=8769 alot of people reviewing it don't like it but I think it's an awesome place. http://www.eatinri.com/sakura/ Best Japanese food in RI and my absolute favorite http://www.jackysgalaxie.com/ that's not even counting all the awesome Indian Places around too
My parents used to tell us about a certain Chinese restaurant they once visited. Not entirely sure of it's location, but the owner had a reputation for being really grumpy and arrogant. It was so bad that people found it funny and would go back just to be abused by this guy! Anyway, they heard about it through a friend and tried it out. Apparently after asking for a glass of tap water my Mum watched in horror as the owner ducked behind a curtain and dipped her glass into a bucket of water and handed her the "drink".
This Place Noble house pretty much encrusts things with MSG and they NEVER get my order right so what they do get me is never what I wanted nor any good. Their Orange beef used to be the BEST but they never give it to me when I order it.
That's one of the reasons I never ask for water at any restaurant, mainly because of the way I've seen it handled before. Who here loves sweet & sour chicken (especially the sauce) or chicken curry rice? I just read for the first time. LoL, why is that?
Here is the factual world wide Asian food grade scale: -Big Asian cities where the food comes from -Good parts of California -Dumpy Asian cities/rest of US West Coast/Vancouver/Toronto -New England/New York/Chicago/good parts of Texas -Rest of US -Anywhere in Europe, except I know there are some rare exceptional restaurants run by expats. Seriously though, New England food sucks, I've lived here for going on 4 years, and still every day I bitch about how shitty the food is. In the first few months I lost 15lbs and learned to cook. The only good "ethnic" food around is Italian, Indian and reasonably good Thai (and gotta drive an hour for Thai), all because nobody imitates those cuisines. Chinese food on the East Coast is really bad, not as bad as some parts of the country where you automatically get Chun King Chow Mein or Chop Suey but bad. General TSO's chicken? Give me a break.. Every Chinese restaurant here still uses the Chopsticks font and has "Wok" in the name, it's just sad. Every Japanese restaurant on the East Coast, bar a few $100/meal NYC joints: A) sucks B) is staffed by 100% non-Japanese Asians (yet no white people to make white people assume Japanese run the joint despite there being a 0.00001% Japanese demographic) C) has at least 2 things Chinese on the menu D) Has aesthetically Chinese decorations (Chinese style dragons, red/gold/jade stuff) E) Calls Hawaiian style teppanyaki "hibachi"??? F) Imports all the technical food from Japan (like unagi) in packages... G) charges twice what GOOD Japanese food costs in California because of Japanese food's perceived extravagance here, and far more for *fried rice* or *yakisoba* from a "Japanese hibachi" restaurant, than a regular Chinese place... H) have deranged looking Manekineko that CAN'T be from Japan. The bottom line is that most people (including college students) aren't food savvy here for things other than standard American fare. Don't get me started on East Coast Mexican either OH: If anyone's wondering why I'm disgruntled: I'm from N. California, Alameda specifically, and where I lived there was a good cheap Thai restaurant around the corner from me. Next door to that was a mediocre Japanese restaurant (Japanese owned even), two blocks away a good Korean owned Sushi boat, three blocks away was a FANTASTIC Cantonese restaurant, five or so blocks away was a $7 Chinese buffet with better sushi than I had at the best-of-Boston sushi restaurant where tekkamaki is like $7 or anything I've had in Hartford, Providence or NYC (at places that I can afford..). Within 4 miles, I had TWO DOZEN Japanese choices, and almost half of them were owned and staffed by actual Japanese people and a couple of them were absolute gems where you could get sushi equal or better than the two sushi bars I've been to in Tokyo. The only teppanyaki restaurant I'd been to before coming here was Benihana which at least has authentic decor, I had never heard of General TSO's chicken either. Within 4 miles there were also at least 5 Thai, and an uncountable number of Chinese (and I lived 2 miles from a Chinatown) restaurants, also many pan-Asian/pacific island/crap places that I didn't eat at Within 10 miles there were over 100 Japanese restaurants (including a real JAPANTOWN, one of only TWO in the US, both in CA), 50 Thai, 500 Chinese and 300 Mexican, not exaggerating. Next to the Thai around the corner was a post office so I could walk 2 minutes there with heavy packages even instead of drive... Finally there was a great flea market where I could routinely pick up $10 used 8/16-bit consoles and Saturns, once in a blue moon import and rarities too... :banghead: :banghead: Leaving Alameda is the single stupidest thing I've ever done, the only thing better here are suburban high school girls, but I'm not having any of that
For a second I thought GoH was going to post a link to a Japanese restaraunt that refuses service to Americans. We have a Chinese Buffet in town, but it gives me indigestion or something. Also, its probably one of the most unhealthy restaraunts in town, because a lot of stuff on the "US" food part of the buffet is fried. And the Pizza there tastes bland and is soggy. But the "authentic" Chinese food there is pretty good. However, they have an Ice Cream Bar and its really really unsanitary, imo. They have a bucket of Murky water and a Do-it-yourself scoop out the ice cream with the scoop thing, and you place it back in the murky water to "Clean" it. Its an OK place to go if you want something else than Mexican food or hamburgers though. I also tried the Wasabi, its like horseradish on steroids. I think GoH is making a stereotype on what hardcore gamers who love everything Asian eat. I guess. And despite what I've said about it, I'd like to try Pocky at least once, but I've heard regular chocolate bars are better anyway, so...
Speak for yourself. I prefer Indian food, then Italian. I don't dislike Oriental stuff, but it's not top of my list. There is a place off Picadilly Circus (London) called The Won kei. Terrible service but amazing Chinese food and cheap. People actually go for the service, amazingly enough. It is renowned for being rude and insulting. A guide haha. NO SOUP FOR YOU! http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A261019
Calpis you really should head down here in RI and check Red Ginger out. Boston is also great for Chinese/Japanese food. And seriously most of the gamers I know seem to have this thing about eating Only asain Food. WHICH also includes Indian. But I'm also a sucker for BBQ and southern US fare and there's nothing like a good Beer and some Bratwursts off the grill.
Well you get the types that think they're japanese people born in a westerner's body, but I think the majority of gamers are just average joes who like a bit of everything. You can't group all those countries together. Chinese, Japanese, Indian (WTF?), Thai are all very different.
Yeah but Like Curry is a staple in Japanese cooking at least modern Japanese. It's just there are alot of Pan asian places around (sans indian which are always sperate from these places) I've eaten Chinese food with an indian flare to it as well. So there is some cross over. Hawaii all the cultures mesh and create varying things same with Singapore. the mashing and melding of cultures create great food.
In Glasgow right at the bottom end of Sauchiehall Street there are 2 restaurants directly across the road from one another. They are in an area where a lot of Chinese either work or go out at night. One of the largest casinos is next door. One of those restaurants is called "Cantonese Express". From the outside it looks awful. It doesn't get much better inside either. It has no charm, is laid out in formica rows like an old school hall. It is clean, but has that run down look about it. What it does have however are the fastest chefs in the business. They take your order and before you have turned to sit down they are bustling past you with your dish! (Slight exaggeration, but these guys have FAST FOOD down to an art, plus it tastes amazing!) When I was a students it was a firm favourite. I can't remember the name of it, but directly across the road is a small dark looking Chinese restaurant. This is where all the local Chinese go for their food. It is better laid out, looks like a proper restaurant, but still has that slightly rustic feel about it. They take ages to serve you, but the food.......mmmmmmm! If you want good 'foreign' food of any kind, find out where people from that particular country dine out. I.e. Which Italian restaurant do most local Italians recommend or go to? That's the one to try! Doesn't always work, but pretty good indication of whether you are being fed rubbish or authentic dishes.
I have to agree with Taucias here. I tend to like all food and like seeking out the best representation of any given type in my city (hence why I'm a little chubby )... ~Krelian
Theres a place down the street with great General Tso's, but I don't think there actually chinese. I don't care, it's good.
