Worst game rip offs/ games inspired by popular games ? One thing I noticed in gaming, be it classic, or current gaming, is when one game hits it big, many rip offs fill follow it. Some good, some bad, some just an obvious clone. What games do you guys remember that ripped off of another hit game? Here's a few on my list that I remember: 1. Legend of Zelda - Known rip offs/clones: Neutopia (TG-16) - Not bad, but obvious elements inspired by Zelda Spiritual Warfare (NES) - Made by Wisdom Tree, the Christian game company 2. Street Fighter II (perhaps the grand daddy of games to inspire countless clones) - Known rip offs: Deadly Moves (SNES) - horrible Fighter's History (SNES/Neo Geo) 3. Doom (another game that inspired countless clones) - known rip offs/clones Rise of the Triad (PC) Tek War (PC) Heretic (PC) Hexen (PC, N64)
I remember a Mortal Kombat rip off called Way of the Warrior for 3DO. Another game sort of like it that was like a Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat hybrid rip off for the arcade was called Survival Arts. The digitized characters and backgrounds looked like someone cut out some pictures from some magazines and scanned them with a first generation computer scanner.
So many shooters these days are ending up more and more like Modern Warfare. Experience, challenges, perks, unlocking weapons, etc.
Needless to say that Mario kart has spawned hundreds of imitations, usually inferior. Crash Team Racing was pretty damn good though.
The Krion Dynasty (NES): total Mega Man ripoff, although you could actually crouch and shoot in directions other than forward. The Power Rangers game on SNES was a total ripoff of Ninja Warriors with some platforming added. Makes me wonder why they didn't choose a better game to rip off. Katakis on C64 was a total ripoff of R-Type with some stuff from other popular shooters like Gradius. In fact, the 80s seemed to be full of complete ripoffs from other games.
Dont know if anyone here has ever heard on Horace. Ripped off 3 of the biggest titles at the time. Needless to say Horace died a horrible death after just 3 releases. Need to get round to buying a ZX Spectrum and the horace games!
The FPS games you have mentioned, except Tek War and Rise Of The Triad are based on the doom engine, so perhaps some NON doom engine FPS should have been mentioned instead. But three games that has been inspired, but not really rip off, of SF2 are the Body Blows series of games, where the three games are Body Blows, Body Blows Galactic , and then Ultimate Body Blows which has also been released on the PC.
every action game that came out after DMC j/k lol although truthfully I consider GoW a shameless DMC ripoff
That's why I never got into first person shooter games. They are all fundamentally the same. Don't get me wrong, some are really imaginative and creative, but after you get over the flashy graphics and novelty, it doesn't do anything for me beyond that.
there were FPS before that, but Modern Warfare's popularity has certainly played a part with it becoming more rampant.
Quite..although that recent Kamiya title dicks all over DMC frankly. I forget the name  Always thought the True Crime games were a poor man's...actually just poor full stop.
Gran Turismo Worst rip offs? - Sega GT - Sega GT 2002 / Sega GT Online - Driving Emotion Type S - R: Racing Evolution - DT Racer / Axel Impact
Puzz loop by Mitchell Corp Ripped off by Popc(r)ap games in Zuma. Nice article about it http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20061024/andersen_01.shtml Guitar Freaks by Konami Ripped off by Harmonix Guitar Hero
Yeah, BF2 was a couple years ahead. Even 2142 was. And I don't think any company would attempt to make a multiplayer FPS without that depth. And yes, MW&MW2 are incredible. And so is BF:BC2 so far. I'm actually quite blown away!
