Following in the same vein as the bug thread. Post your worst memory card saves losses, either by your own hand or via bad hardware. My personal worst has to be the time I erased the wrong memory stick after spending nine hours battling through Alundra on my PSP trying to get everything in the game. I've only finished it once in my life and love the game dearly but can't face going through the first 4-5 hours all over again. Maybe one day.
Probably Final Fantasy VII save, first playthrough ever (long time ago). Probably 13 or 16 hours in, then corrupted file. Was on my brother's 3rd party memory card of course. Got my own shortly after that, 3rd party Mad Catz, still works today, and holds my saves from back then.
One time I was playing with a ball when I was little and my brother was in the room playing FFIII (SNES) (Yes, VI). the missed my catch and the ball hit the SNES, reset it, and somehow deleted his game. Good times. I got the crap beat out of me. Hahaha. I've had a whole slew of random deletions (well, a handful) that kept me from playing the respective game ever again.
2 distinct 99+hour save files from FFVII on a stupid 2 page madcatz memory card the button for changing pages apparently also acts as a format button :\
My GameCube memory Card. :'( It had endless amounts of hours worth of save data on there for Animal Crossing. Then one data my little brother had to format it due to one of the Bomberman games. It was a sad day for us.
I remember playing through GT3 for hours and hours over a couple of weeks and was getting really far into the game, i then decided to play a newer game i had got but it had come up with the message my memory card din't have enough space for saving. So i decided to delete unwanted saves and as i turned away from the screen for whatever reason i hit the d-pad to the right and then hit the delete button only to realize that the save game i wanted to delete was to the left and i had accidentally deleted my GT3 save.
Once upon a time in a bedroom far, far away my nephew who was about 7 at the time decided to delete my Pilotwings 64 save game. I know it was an accident and he didn't know what he was doing but at the time I was absolutely gutted. If I rembember correctly, I had gold medals on just about everything and had unlocked the birdman levels and daft bouncing shoes. And then it was all gone.... You'd think I'd have learnt my lesson regarding leaving small children alone with video games. But no, 13 years later I decide to leave my boy alone with Mario Kart Wii whilst I have a bath. Once again, all the characters and vehicles I'd spent weeks unlocking all gone in an instant. I also seem to remember having to start Burning Rangers over about three times due to the Saturn's save memory being an absolute peice of shite. Maybe if I hadn't been quite so stoned I'd have remembered to tranfer the save over to the AR+, or indeed been arsed to changed the battery in the Saturn.
I've been lucky and not had any, bar one: whilst saving on Morrowind goty on Xbox there was a powercut - 40+ hours of gaming lost...it prompted me to start a new game and I still clocked that again. Loved that game.
I had an early 3rd party Gamecube mem card which did the same. Any time you booted one of a few games there was a good chance it'd fuck the card (Burnout 2 was particularly bad, can't remember the others now). All my saves from all my games gone in an instant. Most of the time this wouldn't really bother me since once I've completed a game I don't go back and play the ending, but I think I was half way through Mario Sunshine. Anyway it sucked. Before that, a mate cleared everything off my main VMU to make way for something. Without asking me. Fully unlocked THPS2 with almost all gaps... that's probably the one that hurt the most.
I once formatted both of my GameCube mem cards. I have had 3 because it won't save files from games with differing origin. Been playing only US games for quite a time and completed RE4 four times, had every weapon available and about 500k money, everything unlocked. I was also pretty far in Zelda: TWW and Viewtiful Joe. So what do I do? I wanna play retarded JP Donkey Konga and just keep pushing the buttons on startup to get into the game asap. I later realized that I said HAI to "format card" because it wouldn't have saved the goddamned Donkey Konga savestate if I didn't... oh man. >_<
When a friend borrowed my copy of Goldeneye 64 and deleted my saves. I was at 007 rank in each folder and had all of the cheat codes, which were gained through beating the levels in the required time (this was before the button codes were 'officially' released even though my buddy figured some out already and gave them to me). Then there are the interact memory cards. what piece of crap they were. FFIX would not save to any, which was my first PSX game and already put in about an hour into the game before I figured out how to 'save' the game lol.
Hmm.probably a friend of mine switching my SNES on and off rapidly while SMW is in it bye-bye 100% run
I had a 16 block memory card for my dreamcast, it reset while I was switching blanks and killed the card I lost every dreamcast save I had.
never had an issue. I played on Nintendo systems using only official Nintendo accessories. never have I found the appeal of paying slightly less for something that is much less reliable.
I remember turning on Banjo Kazooie once, and my save file was imply gone. That had taken me ages and I had tears welling up.. turned it off and on again, and it was back. A friend saved over my FFX save once. Didn't really fuss me though to be honest, I never did enjoy it that much. Always used official memory cards so I've had no problems. My sister had a 3rd party PSX memory card, but it wasnt one with 'pages', and she never had problems with that either. It was yellow.
I had problems with Turok 2 and the Controller Pak. The game told me that my Controller Pak is damaged and I should try to repair it. So I clicked the 'repair' option and the game formatted the whole memory card! btw, it was a official Nintendo Controller Pak. I encountered this problem several times. However I noticed when I switch the N64 off and on again Turok 2 recognizes the Controller Pak without any troubles. I think it's a problem with the game and not the Controller Pak. Anyway I was really pissed off, because I lost all my saves on the Controller Pak. After this issue I bought a DexDrive. Since then I backup all my saves to PC.
I don't think anyone here stood at the shelves in their retailer of choice and thought "hmm, the third party one that's cheaper but will wipe all my saves... or... the first party one that costs a little extra but will always work... I'll go with the cheap one". That said, I bet everyone here who's been stung on third-party memcards now uses first-party. I know I do.
