I'm thinking about getting a PS3 mainly (see: entirely) so that I can play MGS4. It is possible that they'll port it to 360, but there's no guarantee of that and besides I don't want to wait that long. There are some other games that are somewhat interesting like LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Virtua Fighter 5, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Although the last two aren't very persuasive since an improved version of Virtua Fighter 5 and Ninja Gaiden 2 are coming to 360. I guess I'd use it as a BluRay player, too. But still, the overwhelming reason for getting one would simply be to play MGS4. I'm a bit of an MGS fan (as my name should imply) and I'm quite impressed by all the demo footage I've seen so far. So, gauging the awesomeness of MGS4 against the utter lack of anything else, is it worth it to get a PS3?
Yes, but I would wait. I bought a PS3 earlier this year when the 20 gigs were going out of production and had a sale at a local electronic store (Got mine for $400 + tax), and I sort of regret buying it so soon. Only thing I am going to buy this year for it is the new Ratchet and Clank. Also, be advised that many of the 360 to PS3 ports are pretty sloppy many times and many times not as good as the original 360 version.
That's another reason why I'd want to get a PS3 instead of waiting for the 360 version of MGS4. If 360 to PS3 ports suck, then PS3 to 360 ports probably suck too.
Or, you can do what I did and own both and buy the better version, whether is be the 360 or the PS3. Also, will you be using it for multimedia purposes, like music and video?
There are rumors of a cheaper 40GB version coming out. So I'd wait to see what happens. There are some good PS3 titles out and coming, but I think it's been established very well that 400$ is about the top end of what you should pay for a console. I'd take a PS3 for $400.
I would just wait and see how things flow together. Its not like you wont be able to find a PS3 in the future... (right?)
From what I've read, dev's say that 360=>PS3 is hard, but ps3=>360 isn't, like with DMC4 or something. But I think MGS4 will prolly take advantage of bluray.
I'll give you my example: I'll buy GT5 Prologue, and eventually GT5. But don't ask me when i'll buy a PS3
No. As I understand it VF5 is going to run better on the 360 than on the PS3. I can't really think of anything else thats getting ported from PS3 to 360... its typically the other way around. In so far as MGS4 I ask you this: With its current price point (thats technically BACK up to $600 since they just phased out the 60GB model), and its current library of games (and games coming soon), how many people do you honestly think are going to have a PS3 when MGS4? Now, with all the money and resources Konami is undoubtedly pouring into this game to make it work... how many copies are they going to need to sell to make it worth it? Now ask yourself, is it REALLY going to sell that many copies on the PS3 when the time comes? And now ask yoursef: On what console MIGHT it sell very well? (At least in the West).
Dude at 400 Frogskin$ is a nice deal, plus you got the one with hardware BC, so you could sell it for a profit in the near future:nod: Anyways, I'm in no hurry to get one so until it drops to $299 I'm not buying a PS3... I SERIOUSLY doubt theres gonna be a X360 port of MGS4. Sony is desperate to secure as many exclusive games as possible, specially since GTA4 is getting on X360 and PC at the same time than in PS3, while on the PS2 there was a period of 6 months to 1 year until GTA3/VC/SA got a Xbox/PC port. GTA is a real system seller, Hell I'll say the PS2 is in serious debt with the series, since without that exclusivity I bet the Xbox would've owned its ass in no time. On the other hand every MGS sequel has sold less units that the one before it, which gives you an idea of the real potential of the series to lure gamers into the platform for which it was made (and that gamers are getting more stupid every year). Is necessary to look it this way, since from the point of view every hardcore gamer MGS is the bees knees, and its success against other games cannot be doubted... And the last point: there was no MGS3 port for Xbox, and the MGS2 one sucked ass. Unless MS pays Konami for a port (and with the success of Halo and other games, I doubt they will) the chances of getting a port are next to zero. Take my advice: wait until next year when MGS4 get released and then get a PS3. As I said before, sony is desperate, so they may lower the price just before the release, or maybe some kind of bundle.
Maybe, but this was the same situation with the GameCube and its 4 "exclusive" Capcom titles: Killer 7, PN09, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil 4. Just look how that turned out. The GameCube was arguably in a better position than the PS3 is now.
Hey hey, thats the port I played....yeah....it could have been better, lol. I was just telling this to someone as I was playing it, it feels like they stuck the slowdown in there on purpose. It wasn't like it was moving choppy, it was just seriously slowed down. I still liked that port though.
Is not the same: both PN09 and Killer 7 were more experimental (VJ too) and were not well received by critics, while RE4 and VJ which were the only 2 titles considered somewhat groundbreaking were both ported to the PS2. The DVD positioned the PS2 above the Dreamcast, but it was GTA what kept it at the top of the console war. Kids wanted a Nes to play Mario, then they wanted a Genesis for Sonic. PS2/GTA3/VC/SA was the first case in many years where both kids and casual gamers wanted a console for just one game. Indeed, I havent played the PC port, but since the Xbox has a very similar hardware I'll say the PC version is just the same...
Never buy a console for one game. If nothing else interests you then ignore it. Since you say other things interest you it comes down to the amount of disposable cash you have. If buying it won't hurt your bank balance too much then I would say go for it. That is the only thing holding me back. The PS3 has a better future lineup than the XB360 IMO. Also Kojima confirmed it would be exclusive to the PS3 at E3. You can't really compare the two, since the PS3 actually has decent 3rd party support already. In what way was the GC in a better position? A handful of exclusive Capcom games? This generation Sony are investing in a lot of high profile first and second party exclusive games rather than buying off franchises and they are looking great (GT5, Littlebig planet, Uncharted, Ratchet and Crank, GoW3, Killzone 2 etc.) The only thing holding back the PS3 now is the price. It has everything else going for it IMO.
