I thought this would be interesting topic as no one mention this one before on this site.

If your child coming on it way or it already grown up to age five years old from now to the future, would you let your son/daughter play a retro video games like PS1, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo, Nintendo, Sega Genesis and other classic retro console ?

    or

Skip the most awesome classic video games in 1990's and let your children play current generation like PS3 XBOX360 Wii and Wii U

My opinion is that If newer/ younger generation gamers did play retro console that they can appreciate and understand how awesome was in the 90's when they get older.

What your thought and opinion ?

I would have my kid try the games I like, such as Famicom, Mega Drive, Saturn, GameBoy... but I think as soon as it's time to enter elementary school, he'll want to have the stuff his friends have and that'll end up being a WiiU, 3DS and so on (or whatever is up to date at the time). No way to prevent that, except if you deny him those consoles and basically make him grow up like an Amish child. lol

I'm planning to let my son (who is 2 in April) try the simpler, straight forward, child friendly 8-bit and 16-bit games to help him grasp the concept of using buttons and controllers to move characters around, and once he's got the hang of it, then I'm planning to edge him towards current gen stuff gradually, so that he learns why games have evolved the way they did, and why that's not always a good thing.

There's no way in hell I'm letting him online until he's a teenager though. Being exposed to too many assholes, douchebags, and cheaters at a young age might affect his brain in ways we don't fully understand. Again, first I'll start him off with LAN, playing Co-Op together, and once I know he's old enough to be ready, we'll play co-op online, and then I'll let him play Vs online with adult supervision.

Honestly, if I ever have a kid (hopefully not), I'll have a billion things that are more important to think about than whether they'll like retro games.

How's that? I think it always used to be an important thing for many fathers to show their kids the things they liked when they were young. Back in the days that were the beatles, baseball, playing guitar, classic movies... maybe in the future, it will be PlayStation and GameBoy. I don't thin

If I ever have children I'll do my utmost to keep them as far away from any video games as possible. Learning skills/socialising/playing sports are far more important.

    @7Force

A packet of Condoms is always there for you to use or better yet, masturbate is the best option for you because it can't create babies and would die soon as it land on your hand ! You would have 250 millions sperm cells out of billions less important for you to worry about.

Of course I agreed, learning, social and daily active are far more important for children rather playing video games.

The whole "let the kids play retro or modern" is stupid. Let them play both. Why not? I would have been pretty pissed off if I had to play Atari 2600 rather than Master System or Mega Drive when I was a kid.

My son is 5 and plays modern and retro. He loves the EDF series or the Ant Game as he calls it, and can't wait for the new one and loves Sonic All-star Racing Transformed (we play that online every weekend) but he also loves classics such as TMNT, The Simpsons Arcade and so on. Only last Sunday we played some classic Mame. Of course he doesn't play any adult games or any of that war shit or any game that involves killing people. That's just not right and a kid shouldn't be seeing shit like that. He knows I own bloody games such as Dead Island, The Walking Dead, Dead Red Redemption Zombie whatever it's called (and the original) but he also knows he's not allowed to play them.

Why not? Games are games, regardless of the generation. My daughter is 8, and she plays games all over the spectrum C64, Genesis, NES, PSX/2/3, System 256, etc... I agree that there needs to be more to do than just games, but why not let your kids see what they like?
Thankfully, I have a large game collection, so there's plenty for her to choose from.

Your opinion is correct. The first console I ever played was the NES along with the Genesis. Eventually, I got the PSone console. This all matters because I was born in 1996 and I am here now.

Although no matter what, your kid will probably grow to love the console of there time most, even if they never owned one. Maybe to experience the part of the life that they missed out on.

    Yeah, do that.

My kid is turning 6 next week and he love to play atari 2600 to this day consoles. He is a fan of all super mario games and sonic since nintendo and genesis. At this time his favorite consoles to play are the Wii and the DS and when he sees me playing Neo Geo obviously he has to play or I get big trouble he loves it because of the arcade style control. He wants me to take hi to an Arcade place but sadly that is difficult because they are almost extinct where I live. The closest we have was a Marvel vs capcom arcade machine I have but I'm tearing apart because of the bad shape it is and also the cps 2 MVC board go suicide and need to be phoenixed.

This thread doesn't really make sense, a game is a game and I wouldn't force it upon my child to play Retro or Modern. Most likely kids will want to play what others are playing.

from the sounds you are partial to allowing your child playing retro. I would allow my son to do what ever he like as long it doesn't harm him or others.I wouldn't be a good parent though.

I want my children to be successful and popular.

They won't have a computer or even a console.

As much as I love computers and games they have had an overall negative effect on my life.

I spent 4 years huddled in a room playing wow 16+ hours a day.

Now I never play games that don't have a definitive end. The game MUST END.

I also avoid RPGS, I used to love them but they are just stories tied together with buttons. I would rather read and gain more in less time.

No... no electronics for my children.
