    roms are read only, you cant just reprogram the game. He removes the rom, replaces with a eprom/eeprom which is preprogrammed with the english version.

    oh i see, so it's need to be deleted before adding the english translation rom of the game your saying right? so no overwriting is possible

    If memory serves me correct, rom chips can only be written once.

    I'm getting a kick out of this thread because I was the reverse engineer who did the assembly language hacks in the 1997 FF5 translation. =)

    I'd love a cart version of my/our translation, but like, I'd rather not destroy a SNES cart to do it - particularly not the Japanese FF5! Also, the original Japanese FF5 is ill-suited to have our translation inserted. It only has a 2 MB ROM, whereas the English-hacked FF5 has a 2.5 MB ROM.

    I'm *pretty* sure that's not a problem. For some games, I've replaced the original MASKROM with an EEPROM twice the size of the original.
