I was thinking about getting a PocketStation, brand new (sealed). It's still expensive?

Oddly it is probably cheaper (if you want a boxed one) to buy one of the psone ltd edition bundles with them included. Eg, that yu-gi-oh and card captor sakura card magic games. Those sell for very little indeed. Even so the pocketstations themselves are still pretty cheap, tend to be more for the clear ones in my experience.

(just a warning, the CCS pocketstation is very pink!)

  3. what are these exactly.. i've seen them around for years but never figured out what purpose they serve. Are they just like a DC VMU?

  4. Essentially, yes.

Warakia: What was the other screamingly pink Pocketstation? It was part of a LE bundle - I want to say ToHeart or one of the Memories Off games, but I'm not entirely sure. I want one just for the sheer pink. ^_^

Well... yes just like a vmu. You can get 15 blocks of wonderful saves on them.

Wait. I tell I lie to actually anything on them you have to sacrifice most of the space on the card to the games in question! Ok just quickly, here are some nice things about them -

they look cool, but they are a little flimsy - they have IR for some games
Put them in a ps2, quite cool.
Change the tv channel with them (I used to do that when I had one on my mobile strap)
The grandia game for it is very addictive
On FFVIII, you can unlock the missing moomba summon. And various other missing items. (the game is silly though)
Other games of the top of my head that are quite good are saga frontier, CC sakura, etc.

Most of the games specially made for the pocketstation are pretty crap - loads of tamagotchi-esque ones. I quite like them, I use them more than I have ever used vmu for playing games on.

EDIT - just read your post gsl - screaming pink ones come with Cardcaptor sakura clow card magic and... ときめきメモリア2 (Tokimeki Memorial 2)

EDIT - again! it is not as pink as the one with CCS, more of a soft pink. Forgot MGS works with it quite well, as does RR4, SF zero 3. I could go on. The joy is not playing the game on the pocketstation so much as the extras to unlock in the game. I must have put 10 hours into FFVIII pocketstation!

Ah yes it is, you play as a happy little chocobo. Fight random unfair fights till you get lucky. Can you transfer your items and chocobo level from the pc version to the game? You need a very, very rare item to summon the moomba. Oh and I got about 20 phoenix summons from the game as well as lots of invincibility things that helped me cane omega.

A little omake for you - get shienryu (not the ps2 version, with the "DC" sequel.) But the one on the psone. There is a joke version of shienryu running on a pocketstation. Yes a shooter on a pocketstation! It is quite playable for a while as well.

  8. That's Gekioh Shienryu right? I have that one. I didn'treally try the pocketstation on it though.

How do I change the channel with the pocketstation?

  10. I never knew there were Pocketstation goodies for Metal Gear Solid! What are they, and were they left in the US release? And while I know there are Gameshark codes that allow you to access the Street Fighter Alpha 3 Pocketstation game in the US, what exactly was it?

Also, was there really an honest-to-goodness Pocketstation download on Gekioh: Shooting King/Shienryu? I thought it was just the gag 'Pocketstation Mode', where you played the game in LCD-looking black-and-white.

And thanks for the Tokimemo clarification, Warakia.

Ah no, sorry to get people excited, it is as you say - only a pocketstation mode. I thought it was just quite funny to see what could be done if the pocketstations screen has a couple more pixels.

I have never played the us versions of MGS or anything else for that matter so I don't know if they are left in or not! It is the Japanese version of MGS integral for the record.

As for the tv remote, I have two versions of the program - one from a pocketstation utility disc, one from (a quite common - I think) Christmas 98 sony demo disc, given away with just about anything you brought in japan Christmas 98.

I'll update later with more details...

Have some time now - SF zero 3, basically you have a tamagotchi style training game, you do simple exercises which make your characters stronger then pitch them against the computer. Good simple fun, there are guides for this one all over the internet, I remember using one ages ago. A word of caution is that it takes up most of your pocketstation, cannot remember exactly how much.

As for metal gear solid, integral is worth getting even if you speak no japanese as it is in english. Again guides all over the net.

I would very much recommend the grandia game - you play as puii (puffy? in english version) and you just have to jump over these towers, but it is so addictive. I personally really like the pocketstation, I remember loving my rpgs to death, stopping to play only to pick up my pocketstation and play something relevent to the game, it was quite nice. Simpler times! I would like to see more psp, playstation links. They are missing so many opputunities with downloadable games from ps2 to psp.

Edit - forgot to say the mgs integral game is a little game with naomi. Quite fun. If you like the series it is worth it.
