    Hello all,

I'm looking for the CD subsystem from a Saturn - the YGR019B and HD6437097 chip combination. These can either be the pair on a daughterboard, or both integrated on a mainboard. The YGR022 is not useful to me. It doesn't necessarily have to be from a working Saturn.

I can offer about $30 for a daughterboard or $20 for a mainboard.

For reference, here's the VA0.5 daugherboard (image from green.ap.teacup.com):

    Any leads would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - James

If you can't find one more locally, I have a stack of old Saturns here - I'm sure at least one is VA0.5. The only problem is that I'm in HK, so shipping it will be either slow or expensive.

Well, HK is pretty close to Australia - compared to everywhere else ;)
Slow shipping would be fine; this is for a side project of a side project and I'm not in a hurry.
So if you do happen to have one, I'll gladly take it!
    Thanks,
    - James

Pretty sure I have the daughterboard, shipping is pretty cheap too.

If you could figure out how much shipping to Sydney will actually be, that'd be extremely helpful!

Probably about £4, assuming I can find the board. Will let you know when I have a look.

OK, I just checked, and I do have a VA0.5 Saturn - but if you have the board on it's own, it's probably better to use that than to break up a working unit for it.

I have the whole console, but its (very) faulty. I will likely never get time to repair the bad bios removal someone did.

Will update when I have had a look for it.

Ah, did someone try to lever the BIOS off the board with a screwdriver? I've seen a couple of them like that. I've always wondered why Sega decided to use wave soldering rather than reflow on a board with that many SMTs on it, since that forced them to glue the chips down really well...

The va0.5 arent glued down IIRC as they are through hole and on the top of the board. The ones with glue are easily removed if you are using hot air - the heat makes the glue and chip seperate.

I do not know what they did with the board, but its a mess. To be fair, I dont like removing large dip chips much - SMD are much easier to work with IMO.

A decent vacuum desoldering station works wonders - but it's still slow and I'm yet to see one that doesn't slowly clog up.

Yeah, but it's amazing how many people that decide to hack on consoles don't bother getting a hot air machine - especially considering how cheap they are now.

I don't mind desoldering DIPs that much - I have an old Hakko desolder station that was thrown out at work, but was basically never used (it was a 100V Japanese unit - but there were also several worn out ones that had good 220V transformers in them...).

I have a desoldering station, SMD is still far easier/faster/cleaner. But it certain helps a lot, but its still a pain :)

Sorry to bump the thread, but I still haven't had any luck finding one of these. I'm sure there must be one out there somewhere :)

I think I actually found this console the other day. I will check this weekend.

I'm going after the SH-1 ROM. Yes, the CDBxxx markings are almost certainly the ROM rev.
They're definitely hand solderable (as long as the pins aren't bent about too much). A daughterboard would make my life easiest in terms of the approaches I was considering, otherwise I'd have to make up a breakout board.

I'm averse to buying whole Saturns mainly because of the shipping cost. They never made it big here and the cost to get anything that bulky over tends to be an arm and a leg.

I have several non-working Saturn boards that are just taking up space here. I believe these are all from Japanese consoles. If you are interested in any I can send to you for the cost of shipping.
