Im interested in how you actually cut the plastic so neatly.. please say you used a saw.. i don't have any big equipment.

This mod seems to be the popular one, what mod chip you using to allow there to be no DVD drive? I heard you need to turn a system check off for that.

I just used a really sharp scalpel, then some fine sandpaper to smooth out any rough bits.

For the sides, i heated the blade and melted through most of the vents, then sanded them down.

The biggest pain was getting the metal cage to fit, you get too much interference without it, so i snapped the sides off and ditched the top part and it works fine with just the bottom panel in place.
Took the best part of a day doing that!

As for the modchip, it's an Xecuter 3 CE with bios 3294, which skips the dvd-rom check.

I've just fitted a 160gb laptop hdd which is a lot quieter and cooler.

The link to the guide is dead, i'll try and fix it soon.

If you're giving it a go, give me a shout if you get stuck :)

Hell yeah im giving it a go. I saw Bateria's vacum plastic guide, though its problely a lot nicer *(in this instance) to just use the top. I had thought of putting the xbox into a terminal PC (the ones you usually get at library's), I saw one on ebay which would fit, however it looked urgely and i don't have that kinda skills. Thanks for replieing back btw.

Another 2 question if i may so ask... im guessing you still use the four original screws, and just made them shorter? or is it secured by another form.

Is that was the xbox circle looks like on top when you remove the logo? it looks pretty cool.

    Edit:

At looking at my xbox, and yours, it looks like you have taken a few cm from the sides (top plasic) and then above the line (above the power button). Is that correct?

There's six screws, two are hidden under the labels.
I can't think of any easy way of shortening them, so I cut a pen into sections and used them as spacers on the screws :

Only thing is the xbox 'floats' off the ground with them in, so i've left them out for now until I find some shorter screws to use, so for now the top is just sitting on unsecured.

I had to cut out the circle on the top, underneath the jewel as it's filled in.
The jewel is a nightmare to get off btw. It's stuck on with a double-sided super-sticky foam pad, and I mean super-sticky.
I poured lighter fluid and meths around it hoping it would dissolve or loosen the pad, but still had to jam a screwdriver in there to lever it off.

As long as you have some patience, it's a fun mod to do.

Good luck, and if you've any more questions, fire away!

Edit: Well i found a real dodge way! though im not sure about it.. even though the soldering is pretty much wireless, but still! hahha

Never tried the softmod myself, just went straght in with the soldering iron!

    £65 seems a bit expensive, I paid about £30 for mine -
£32.99 here - http://www.modchip-store.co.uk/Xecuter-3-Ce-p-21.html - but out of stock at the moment.

Do you know what version xbox you have?
v1.6/v1.6b boxes are different to the earlier versions, so don't know if the softmod process would be the same as for v1-v5

I think its all the same. £30 a fine price, but apprently Team Xecuter aren't making 3CE anymore, there are 2.6 CE chips around, however they don't having any flashing capablities.

I already have the xbox softmodded, just got to find out how to do the Tsop mod.

I have a v1.0 xbox.. NICE AND RETRO.

    Edit:

Well it seems like i only have to solder 2 point pairs together, on my softmod, i have the option to flash bios.. all i need to know now is how to modify/get a flash file to flash with out the dvd checker...

    Edit:

I tried modifing the bios, but it turns out to be much more of a task, i did get suck in one part and asked on xbox-scene.com/forums for help, though Heimdall from the forums pointed out that i could just connect 4 pins together on the dvd power socket on the mobo to assume the xbox into thinking the DVD drive is closed. This is a much better idea than modding the bios as that changes the whole system.

Heres the picture of what wires i need to solder.

This pin idea doesn't work. back to Tsop Idea.

    Edit:

I can't get Tsop to work, i have soldered the points, and no luck... :(

Very nice mod, really well done

When I removed my jewel I put the case top in the freezer for a week. Gave it a good crack on the back of the jewel with a hammer and it just popped off.

What problems are you having with your TSOP flash? I've done close to 100 systems with Splinter Cell and Bert & Ernie [Reloaded] over the years. Haven't done one in at least 18 months though.

Have you tried flashing with a new BIOS?

You probably would've figured this out by now, but you can't do TSOP flashes on 1.6 motherboards.

I haven't actually done a TSOP (never had a reason to), but if you have one of the bigger chips I recommend making a switch so you can use multiple BIOSes.

I can't flash anything, i obversly didn't solder it right, but my skills are very limited in that area, i acutally soldered it down, then i tried to remove what i did with some metal twissors, (i know you can get de-soldering kits), anyway, so i pulled, and the circle line which i was tring to connect with the other dot, pulled away from the board, so i have a loose (very tiny) circuit board wire stuck. But yeah.. like i said, my xbox still works fine, and im leaving it there, till i get another xbox to mod, or ill retry the pin process on the DVD power cable.

Edit: to answer your question.. har har har

    i have a Xbox v1.0, and i tried serveral bios's, mainly from X2.bios.bin's.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying.

So you've mangled the DVD Rom connector on the Mother Board, correct? If that's the case, leave it alone if you're not planning to use the DVD drive anyway.

What about the TSOP flash? You've soldered the two sets of points on the MoBo to enable writing to the TSOP, yes? You only need the tiniest blob of solder to make the connection and both are on the top of the board for a 1.0, iirc. Then you just need Splinter Cell (or MechWarrior or whatever) and the appropriate Bert & Ernie and BIOS files on a memory card.

Its one on the top, and one on the bottom for v1.0. But i kinda made a mess whilst soldering the points for the tsop flash. My method of trying to see if it flashes is via EvolutionX dash board, and in the settings.

How much would you need to have one commissioned.

    Updating the guide now.

Check here to see how it's going:
    http://bobzee.multiservers.com/console/xbox/slimcase.htm

Big page, so low bandwidth users beware!

More new pics, but they're still taken by my crappy phone.

    Who, me?

Looking good, plus the write-up is fan-fooking-tastic!

With a bundle of old Xbox units lurking around, I am tempted to try it.
