Is there any chance you'll be releasing the drive image in the future? I've been looking for this for forever.
Well I think we have one of the first actually booting G5 Alpha kits! You need to backup that hdd ASAP!

I have 3 of these now, 2 working and the other hangs on boot. I compared "printenv" on the 2 systems in Open Firmware. Both are identical in settings and specs, one difference I noticed on the non-working one is it has newer firmware: apple powermac7,3 5.1.8f7 bootrom, compared to: apple powermac7,2 5.1.4f0 bootrom. I can see and view the dir listing of the hard drive and manually type "boot xeboot" and watch it ELF load the xboxroma.bin file but just freezes. Could be the 1029 is too old for the newer firmware on this box, I'll know once I swap video cards and memory to confirm. I'd love to see open firmware in verbose while it's loading/freezing to see what's preventing it from booting.
Any chance you'd be willing to post the printenv here, or more specifically the bits for xeboot? I'm curious as to whether the xboxroma.bin from the Giano project can boot on a real G5.
Network card used in the Alpha G5 Intel PRO/100+ Adapter 741462-010 http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS5&_nkw=741462-010&_sacat=0
are you implying that we could theoretically build our own Xenon devkits since most of the parts are readily available
The G5's were bone stock Dual 2.0 with added Intel NIC and ATI video card(s). So you don't even have to build anything really. And here's how they got back into the wild. http://assemblergames.com/l/media/albums/syclopse.10/
I have a source that told me friends of him build a G5 from Apple parts (IBM hardware afterall). and "they" used a recovery disk that was online. (wich is still what I want from him, cause he was suposed to have it somewhere. the tower now runs BSD) Because the FrankenAlpha was "easy" doesnt mean any next gen should. but if you got a recovery or backup of the drive, you could figure out how to make one run i think, MS would not go all the trouble protecting the prototype hardware if they never can run retail games, they changed some parts of the executable layout (or something) after all, so it again would be awesome and historicaly intresting. running preretail software and samples. I believe it could be done, maybe "cheaply" aswell... but recovery, or hdd files are required.
Assuming the software isn't locked to the machine it came from, and the full log of printenv is the same as a standard G5, yes
Seems to be a sensitive subject, if he has them or not. says hes not a collector but collected 3 of them somehow? maybe a re seller? lol looking at previous posts and the type of information shared, there was two working ones. both sold to the same anonymous buyer? if you know them tell them im interested. I'm stumbled by it. considering other questions here went un answered at the time, while in possession of working units..it looks like hes put in some effort into learning about the machines, but once in possession, could not elaborate on inner workings. I never claimed for him to be a pirate either. if its 75lbs of useless aluminum why sell to begin with? not a pirate...sells microsoft intellectual property... whoever has a one of these units should come forward on the current state of their machine. if its sitting in a closet somewhere id be sad.
I am still looking for a disk image of one of these. I have everything now to start a franken-alpha. I would also really like to see someone come forward with the state of their unit as well, and providing a disk image would be utterly wonderful. It makes a nice project and I think that could be fun to work on. I don't feel that anyone is entitled to something like this, but it would be pretty cool to have out there.
More people will agree on your post, But I also totaly understand the amount of money people have spend on one and are not "just giving it away" for some "collector" who happens to get an MacOSX Alpha... If such person need money for a release, with some proof and a setup paypal or whatever but I also understand the rareity speaks to collectors, so pure disklayout and bootfiles so we can try running/fixing the remote recovery (I dont own any G5 (yet) but playing with the files and Giano/Qemu seems to be cool)
Oh I'm sure, and that's why I note that there is no way that I can deem myself entitled to anything like a hard disk dump. It's totally hinging on the goodwill of someone out there who still has this data. I just wanted to make it known that at least from myself and a couple others, the demand for this kind of stuff is there.
