Xeno GC is a modchip. I heard there was some open source modchip firmware for Gamecube, that was compatible with and more capable than the retail GC modchips' firmwares, but I can't remember much to be honest.
It would be interesting to see some DVD patch action rather than IPL stuff. Unfortunately MCUs are very well protected.
Ah, As you all know I just got a game cube and I notice it doesn't play DvDs. That kinda shock me. If I put a mod chip in it, can I play DvDs? I'am wondering with SONYS ps2 having DvD playing ability how Nintendo could possible leave that option out?
...What? CDs aren't DVDs, and DVDs aren't tiny. If you look at the Gamecube's drive apparatus it literally won't reach out as far as a full-size DVD would need it to. Obviously you can't rig an external drive without a huge amount of technical expertise and reverse engineering. Why would Nintendo make the Gamecube read and play DVDs (and pay the appropriate licence fee per unit to the DVD Consortium) if the drive shell wasn't going to fit them in the first place? Think a bit more before posting, hmm? This is pretty obvious stuff...
@wildcat You could buy a Panasonic Q It's a Gamecube & DVD-Player ^^ But is a little bit more expensive than the GC ^^
GCOS was open source and did everything you needed to play DVD-Rs. If you made your own BIOS replacement chip that could load the GCOS DOL executable then you have all you need.
Tenchi, Motziilla, Thanks, Those ideals sound great! h: :nod: ;-) The other member hasn't read my passed posts, I just got this thing. :crying: Were do you get one of those pansonic Q? thats 1 nice machine Tenchi ! I have never heard of them, or even see one before? You guys know how much I got this GC for? $10 used.
Then you looked in it, then you decided it should be able to play DVDs? The Panasonic Q is a delicious bit of kit, anyway. I'd love one. Quite expensive last I checked, in the region of £100-£200. $10 for a used Gamecube is a fine price, you did well there.
actually GC could be pirated via modchip and use regular DVD you just have to remove the case or change it for a modded one with more space so DVD's fit http://www.xbox-modchips.com/viper-gc-case.htm there are homebrew programs to play dvdmovies and such, some of them were ported recently to the wii, mplayer for example....
neoblast, Thanks for that link: quite helpful you are! again thanks!:icon_bigg I hadn't known the cube didn't play DVDs, Oh Well! :banghead: Well I have never heard of the pansonic Q till now. I don't know were to even get 1 even if I wanted to. It looks really nice but first I have to get other things for this one I got and thats going to take awhile cause I'am a busy person.
Actually you don't need a replacement case. Just buy 8cm DVDs. They are used in DVD camera recorders. That's what I always used and they worked great. I used them in combination with GCOS loaded by either PSOLoader with the BBA, Action Replay + Memcard Hack, or Action Replay + SDLoad.
The point is, the Xeno GC wasn't a "BIOS replacement Modchip" but a "drive modchip". Back in the GC days, this was unusual, like on Xbox 1. Drive modchips gained popularity on Wii since it was much harder there to hack the Console security itself. The drive, however, had the same backdoors as on the gamecube, so drive modchips appeared incredible fast. As far as I know, there is no open source drive modchip for the gamecube. If you want to clone a xeno gc, just replay the initial communication with the drive. That's how this xeno gc clone was built. XenoGC can load some additional code (the easter egg...), that part was not cloned, so on those chips, holding "start" when booting the game (which was the button combination to activate the easter egg) would crash the gamecube. The XenoGC was much more clever than it first appeared. It could on-the-fly change the data read from DVD (and insert some code into the apploader), to enable advanced features like video-mode switching and that easter egg.
