I'm confused after watching this video.

Isn't required a SoG splitter to properly play on non-SoG monitors?

Well, the PS2 outputs separate sync in interlaced modes, so it is conceivable that it could be instructed to output it in progressive as well.

The PS2 can output 480p over SCART can't it? That doesn't use sync on green, so maybe something like that is going on here?

When using progressive mode, the only signals active are R, G and B. So no, it can't work with SCART at 480p (or the corresponding 50hz progressive mode) due to lack of video sync signal ...

I don't know what's going on with that monitor but it has a horrible red tint on it's image. It's similar to what you get when you use SoG signal with a sync splitter which doesn't remove the sync from the green line. Except that the sync being on green gives the screen a nasty green-ish tint.

So were the PAL releases of games even able to switch over to 480p and be played via component cables on TV's that supported it?

And yes, I forgot that PAL modes are usually 576 lines. :dejection:

Yes. It was up to the game's developer to include 480p.

According to the video description, he only used a component to VGA adapter.

I'm going to buy a simple component to VGA adapter to see how it goes.
I have a LM1881 chip so I guess I can include a splitter on the adapter.

Component does not use green for sync. Therefore component to VGA conversion by default removes the need for a sync on green monitor.

Component DOES use green for sync. (Actually, the green wire on Component has the whole monochromatic image, including sync and bright information).

The other two wires have only red and blue information. Green is not transited actually, but is "guessed" by the TV circuitry since it has two thirds of the signal, whatever is missing of the colors can be calculated with the black and white image as reference.

The green wire in component isnt green though, its luminance (being the Y in Y PB PR), as you obviously know from your post.

SoG is actually something different, but when people say "sync on green" they are usually talking about component. Which is why Lum's post is going to confuse a lot of people lol

SoG is actually a VESA endorsed specification, which allows connection of a computer to a monitor using just three BNC cables.

Since the sync information is mixed with the green signal there's a reasonable chance of you getting some sort of "stable image" on a Component TV while SOG is active on the PS2.

When I said green, I was implying that the wire connector is painted as "green", not that it has green signal in it. I even mentioned that Component video does not transmit the green signal so that bandwidth can be saved. :)

i have that exactly same vga-component cable in the youtube description and it doesn't work on non-SoG monitors or TVs etc. i have tried it on various equipment

if you enable VGA mode on PS2 via Xploder, GSM or anything else, the console outputs RGB indepent of the setting in the main ps2 browser. so you will get RGB through your component cable instead of Y PB PR in this special VGA mode. the sync will be on green line, and unless your monitor supports sog, you won't have any picture as the monitor won't be getting any sync.

or you can use LM1881 to seperate horizontal and vertical sync from the green line of the component cable (which will output Green not luminance in VGA mode) and add that to the adapter's vga pins. but you will need 5v which isn't supplied by the component cable.

my dream adapter would be like the one in the description, but having an LM1881 inside and feeding the sync to the sync pins of VGA connector (pin 13 and 14).

it would get the needed 5v from a usb cable attached to the ps2 as the component cable cannot provide 5v.

this way i will be able to use my original ps3 component cables, and with the adapter plugged, i will get full RGB for the monitors with VGA input.

In other words a technically correct statement phrased so miserable it barely made sense.

I did say component to VGA conversion. As in transcoding rather than a passive adapter. :encouragement:

Yes, I know you know what you are talking about and I know you were right. But Lum was still "technically" correct - although not in the context 99% of people would use sync on green.

I understand everything being discussed and still remain confused but that is because of the convoluted nature of video connection standards and video signal standards. Needs more flowchart and tables.

Just a shot in the dark, seeing as it is possible to strip sync from green in the same way you can composite video - could you possibly separate the H-SYNC and V-SYNC signals as well? Without some convoluted circuit preferably and cleaner than the video shows. Would be nice to get VGA output of a PS2 that didn't look fugly. Probably missing something here.

Several years ago when the official PS2 schematics leaked, I devised a mod that would take H and V sync from the video encoder chip, amplify to 5v (they're 1.8v on the epoxy GS chip or 2v on the metallic GS chip). The R,G and B signals would go straight to the VGA connector. Also I figured out that a resistor jumper toggles SoG on and off, allowing you to get crystal clear graphics from the system on any monitor.

The blaze playstation 2 vga works with any monitor, so it's possible to do it. Although how convoluted their circuit is I don't know.

You're better off using component cables though or a component to vga adapter. I believe you only get a display with a VGA cable after you've booted the xploder disc.

blazer ps2 vga cable has a lm1881 inside afaik (unlike the official vga cable which only works with sog displays) and it is nearly impossible to find one now.

I saw those and asked you about them a few months/years ago. Shame it doesn't work on the models I have sitting around.

True and I've had a component cable for a while. But I like doing things just because you can do them and I'd imagine some day someone will ask me to mod something to do exactly this.
