They aren't that rare, uncommon not rare, go to Akihabara and you'll find most of them except the automobile colour ones. Midnight Black and Blue are around as are the Sakura, Gundam, etc. I found a Sakura one in a Junk shop but passed on it as it was 5000 Yen untested.

...bit of a trek for me from Europe sadly! Certainly very uncommon on this side of the World as I recently saw a Sakura on sale for a boxed £300 and it went! Don't think I have ever seen a Gundam gold, a couple of MB & BB units. A Fair few CW units etc. Never seen an Automobile, although I know people who own them.

Sorry? What? I don't understand what you mean. I usually place my eBay thread items in one series of separated threads and I have explained there that it means it's easier for people to find stuff they are interested in. I have just done the same here in YJ, is there an issue? What's the problem?

It is a yellow one. IIRC, this is the same seller who was trying to sell just the box of a DTL-H50000 unit for 30k yen some while back - his stuff seems to be on the expensive side, although to be fair, you don't see many unopened Automotive units up for sale.

    As for the others:
Sakura & aqua were limited ed, but I have no idea of the numbers. You usually see a couple up on Yahoo most weeks. They occasionally turn up on ebay, too. Both are very attractive colours, IMHO.
Gundum gold - these seem to command a higher price than the above, so I assume are rarer - but again, there's often 1 or 2 up on Yahoo. That one you pointed out has been up for a while now.
Midnight blue/black - there are usually several of these up at any given time, but they seem to command higher prices than the sakura/aqua, presumably because they have the BB stuff included.

There are two versions of the Aqua, Silver and Sakura PS2s, so you need to be sure you're getting the "limited edition" one. The Limited Edition ones are from the SCPH-39000 series, and feature boxes that are all one colour with no markings on the front except for PS2 written in the middle and the colour written at the top. There were 10,000 released of each colour.

The more common "non-limited edition" units were the SCPH-50000 series, which were virtually unlimited in number and have similar boxes except they have a few more markings on the front of the boxes (particularly the bottom right-hand corner, which is coloured in, I think).

No issue really, but I believe it's proper forum etiquette to make one post w/ multiple items. I don't see how 8 in a row makes it any easier for people to view. If anything, it makes it harder due to the size of the rank images and avatars. One message is a minimum of like 20 lines.

Back on topic: I can help you w/ the items if you want them, but shipping these things ain't cheap. That's why Japanese systems can cost a lot in the west, even though they run peanuts in Japan (Saturn, anyone?).

i dont know insured sea mail works quite well (as long as you don't live in a country that has crooked postal workers).

My comments were about the 39000 series models, but that's a good point. I think you're right about the boxes - those for the later units will have the little yellow triangle with a + in it, located on the lower left corners. You can also differentiate between the units themselves, by checking for the case colour in between the reset/eject buttons - 3xxxx units will be same colour as the rest of the case, whereas the later units will have a black strip between the buttons. One thing I've become curious about - nearly all the colour variants I've seen have a black rear panel around the fan/ac input/av multi out, except for the 39000TB model, which is the same colour as the rest of the case. Are there any others like this?

The Midnight Black models are pretty easy to find. The Ocean Blues are getting hard, and the hardest is the Zen Black which was released at the same time as the Ocean Blue but no one bought it.

The Automobile Red.....what a bad taste my mouth has from those consoles.

I first tried to buy one about 4 years ago on Yahoo. I won the auction, paid the money, but the guy was a scammer. I never got the item and he was soon kicked off of Yahoo. Adios money.

Fast forward a couple of years. I'm back in the US and I get wind of the fact that the Sony USA site had some old stock of the American editions of the European Automobile Color consoles and they're selling them dirt cheap. I create an account, log in, buy one, then get an email saying there was a problem with my purchase and it's been cancelled. I try again. Same result. I wait a few days, try again. Same result.

Fast forward to 2 months ago. Another Red one available on Yahoo. I tell myself, "You've been fucked over enough times with this console, just leave it alone." Then the rational part of my brain steps in and says, "Shut up, those incidents have nothing to do with each other." So I bid on it. And I win.

After about 3 weeks I contact the Seller and ask him where it is. He tells me that he's shipped it. He gives me the tracking number. I call the shipping company and they tell me that it's been delivered and I signed for it. Unfortunately, I get about 2-4 boxes delivered every day so it's possible that I got something from the guy but it sure as hell wasn't a red PS2. I put the issue aside and I haven't touched it again since my only case is saying, "I might have gotten a box from the guy but it wasn't my item." I have no proof and I didn't even discover the problem until about a month had passed. Also, I have no idea what he could have sent instead since I never received any "extra" item that wasn't accounted for.

In the end I've tried to buy the console 5 times, I've spent about $600, and I have absolutely nothing to show for it.

The 39000TB model was a Toys "r" Us blue limited edition model (a different blue to the Aqua model), and as you say, is blue all over. There is a SCPH 50000 series Toys "r" Us limited edition silver model (50000TSS) which, suprisingly enough, I have at home. I've never opened it to look at the rear of it, but there's a possibility that this may be silver as well? I'll have to check it some time. All the others, as far as I'm aware, are black.

Sounds almost identical to my experiences with trying to obtain Playstation 1 development boards & kit. It's become my nemesis and each time I attempt it, I get stung!

Gaijinpunch: I might take you up on the offer of assisting. Shipping from Japan in my experience tends to be expensive, but at least it gets here!

Let me have a think about it - sorry for posting 8 - guess I got a little carried away as frankly in the UK we never see these items appear far or less available en masse! :noooo:

Limey & Seq-Blender: Thanks for the information. Clears it up nicely!

That's a long walk to get to a post office that supports it though.

No worries... it happens. I'm just a double-post nazi. I'm sure you were having a hell of a time! I do wish these damn ranking images were smaller though!

really? i think it works like shit, packages are always beat to hell and they take +2 months to show up and its not THAT cheap tbh.. personally i would rather fork out an extra $15-25 to get my stuff safe and sound and in just a few days after shipping out, but i guess it depends on what you buy and how tight your wallet is..

Once you pass a few KGs it does get rather expensive, a 10KG parcel would cost 16,200 Yen EMS, 12,550 (+approx 800 Yen for Insurance + Express Delivery) and 6,750 Surface (+600 yen for Insurance and Advice of delivery). I have sent a monitor and a Laserdisc unit via Surface and it got there in just over 3 weeks and as I packed it well it got there fine and in working condition.

For lower kg items then SAL works well, it can be insured (most people don't like it as they might need to walk to a larger post office and requires more paperwork) but I have had no problems with it.

I've never seen that much benefit in SAL. Yeah, it's cheaper, but it's no like it's half off or anything. There seems to be some weird variable shit going on which I've never been bothered to figure out.
