IMG_2886.PNG Afternoon guys, I just wanted to know if anyone can help me out on finding out information about this particular item. I am based off in Southern California and came across this through a local store (still in their possession) which he had got a couple of years ago through an ex-Microsoft design employee. What i have heard is that 10 were made and 8 were destroyed on site. Just wanted to get more information about this and see if it all checks out.

There is info about the different controller s colors in this thread GUIDE - Xbox Controller S (http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/xbox-controller-s.59534/)
(I've also quoted it in this post)
There is also this thread where someone is talking about one of the blue rainbow controllers.
xbox controller i never seen before, is this real (http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/xbox-controller-i-never-seen-before-is-this-real.59254/)
And at the bottom of that thread Assembler posts an archive link to the site where you could order the replacement shells back in the day and that yellow shell is visible.

Although its not some prototype it is still worth more than a standard retail controller as they don't pop up that often.

That is really an awesome find. It is amazing to see all the new discoveries for the original XBOX that have showed up over the recent years. Glad you can share it with us.

One of the blue ones was up on ebay for like $200 for quite a while but never sold for that price as far as I know.

    Value is a strange thing.
Hard to get an answer if it's one of a kind.

Depends on what it is, does it work, what's changed, condition and a lot more.

Also you can quote and type below the quote.
    Helps fix doubleposting

Yellow is more common for these replacement shells because it was one of the last colours to have stock.

You'll find the badge/jewel will be glued on not adhesive like original ones as they've been pried up with a knife. I think in the photo by the OP the jewel looks bent a bit.

These shells were around US$10 I believe so don't fall this crap.

The early runs of those shells actually included the silver jewel in the middle.

The controller looks like one of the rainbow reproduction shells in my opinion, but it's hard to say with any certainty just looking at the picture. Also, as Hex1gon point out the jewel looks bent and to my eyes it looks twisted a bit off center as well. My initial thought is that it's most likely a repro. That said, the guide that Syclopse wrote (see link posted by Charles) should be your reference for attempting to determine if its genuine Microsoft or a repro.

From a value perspective, I try to use comparable sales in the last 12-24 months as a reference. The rainbow s-type reproduction controller shells typically sell for about $100usd in excellent condition. From what I have seen, there have been about 5 of the repros for sale in the last 12 months including red (x2), light blue (x2) and a green one that looks very similar to the one in your photo. The highest sale price I saw for a repro shelled s-type was $125usd.

If it can be verified as a real prototype S-Type controller then it would probably sell in the range of $500 - $750usd or possibly more depending on condition. I am only aware of 2 comparable sales involving genuine prototype s-types in different colors. I know another Assembler member bought an prototype orange s-type and I bought the burgundy s-type. Good luck. It's a very nice find.

I should've bought one of the shells then lol, if they're selling for 100USD. Bloody hell.
They were on clearance or something from llama for like 7USD or something.

Shows just how crazy some people can be, probably because some think they're prototypes or test colours.

Yeah plus even when they first came out they were only $15.99 that could have been a pretty good return on profits. Personally I'm a pretty big fan of them but I don't think I could pay $100+ for one.

I completely agree with you. I think people see the Microsoft stamp between the memory card slots, the sticker on the back and decide to take a small gamble on the seller's story. Frankly, I have yet to see a completely honest listing for one of the rainbow s-types.
