This is not really new. I used to do that to some DC discs too. It's weird, but works!

this is very dangerous to do that because you may distroy the disc structure itself. The plastic may melt and die several month later...

This is a very stupid way to do things. you risk warping the disc or killing every single bit of data on it.

What it does; it removes a protective layer of film that covers the disc. So, the laser has less material to 'look' though and can now see the data more easily.

It's a very silly method of doing things. It's like loosing your keys and using a flamethrower to open the door. Yes, you'll get in - but you'll probibaly ruin everything else.

I don't know about boiling, but my "Gamedoctor" (there are many other names for the same product) removes a layer from the CD, and I've done this to quite a few discs. They all work great, and many of them have been "doctored" for over two years now. The boiling seems a bit risky to me, but simply removing a layer of plastic from the bottom of the disc wouldn't harm it (at least, I haven't had any problems).

In Japan they seem to "polish" the discs all the time... works flawlessly, all the games I bought in Japan were absolutely scratch-free :smt023

the magic key to make dirty\scratched discs working again is simple; Pure White Vinegar. :smt045 :smt045

don't forget to whipe the disc from the interior to the exterior with a genttle paper (or everthing else ..).Voila! :smt023

  15. Hmm, never tried the vinegar, but yeah, those GameDoctor/Disc Doctor thingies work excellently. They leave some odd markings on the bottom of your CD due to the way the machine works, but I've had several game discs and CDs go from skipping all the time to working flawlessly with the help of that device.

The game doctor works by just smoothing out the bottom disc in a way that the laser can still pass through.

Here is my theory on how it works.
Boiling ONLY WORKS WITH STAMPED CDs NOT CDR DISCS. Here's why. The CDs you buy (that are not illegally made ;-)) are stamped. The data area is made of metal/silicone and then they put a plastic coat to protect it. WHen you boil it, the metallic/data part will heat up (dont worry cuz your data is still safe for a certain amount of time) and thus heat up the plastic glass faster. The glass starts to loossen up but not enough to where it will melt off. It loosens up enough to where the scratched areas are leveled off and thus you have a flat surface again.

The reason CDRs wont work is because its nothing BUT plastic/silicone which means it will melt and thus you loose your data.

    re

So does boiling physically remove the scratches? I'd find that hard to believe...

    Re: re

It doesn't remove them at all. It just removes a thin layer of protective coating.

This is old news. It was all over gamefaqs when a bunch of PS2 demos would not work. What's real stupid is someone put one in the microwave, but I think that worked too.

I got that disc and mine does'nt work either. :angry
