Your favourite and least favourite consoles

    Hey Guys,

Bit of a clichéd question I know. But I've been wondering again!
What is your favourite games console? Why is that? Do you have a favourite hardware-wise, and a different favourite games-wise?

Is there any console you want to love but can't? Any you despise?

I'll give a couple of personal examples. I love my 360 for the games and Live Implentation etc. But fuck me, I hate the hardware. My first gave 'Play DVD' messages rather than 'Play game' after a week. My current just gave me a 'Play DVD' option today, I'm hoping that was a one-off. The controllers are the comfiest ever, but again, I think the build quality is crap. I have one with a tight analog stick, some batteries they just do not like. My girlfriend's controller has a dodgy D-pad down and RB button- the dpad needs a really firm press to register, and the RB is soft-not clicky- so it feels odd.

I'm not a huge fan of the PS2 system; sounds weird, but very few games appeal to me. They always seemed very 'previous generation' in terms of presentation in comparison to Xbox and Cube titles.

The original DS is the ugliest thing ever. The DSlite is a beautiful design by comparison.

    What are your opinions?

I love the xbox. Its such a unique system and still has so much potential. Hope to get a development kit and begin writing homebrew stuff for it.

Hate the PS2. Over crowded with shit titles and non really took advantage of what it could do

The 360 is high on my list of best consoles (great pad, reasonable price, good library of games), but the hardware is just complete crap. Other favorites: Saturn (one of the best pads ever, great arcade library), DC, PS2 (great variety of games for such a popular system, but relatively bad pad and again, crap hardware!).
    I hate: Game.com and Virtual Boy :)
I know this is gonna be unpopular, but the N64 is kinda crappy: weak games library outside of the few classics, pad with a terrible analog stick that practically falls apart, and extremely blurry graphics in just about every game.

Ah the N64 is one of my tops. I'm sure you've heard the reasons though!
I'd love to try a Virtual Boy.

Favorite would probably be the PS1. Least favorite would be the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Why the dislike of the Mega Drive, A. Snow?

Favorite: Duo (TG-16 cd actually). It was like having a space station land in your living room. So far ahead.

Least favorite: Jaguar. Cost me $250, the games sucked except for tempest and aliens. Died faster than a mayfly.

Not so much a dislike but there always has to be something at the bottom. It was just the weaker system of it's time.

Ditto. I also think it's a great looking console and a fantastic media center.

Again, ditto. Overrated. PS3 is in the same field.

    Hmmm,

    Favorites:

    >> N64:
One of the greatest consoles ever (okay, it might be a bit biased as I love the big N), gave me some of my favorite games such as Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Smash Bros. 64, Mario Kart 64, Mario 64, ToZ: Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask, Jet Force Gemini, etc. Many games that came out on the later days of the N64 were pretty amazing pushing the system to its limits.
And despite the blur I think the capability of using trilinear filtering gave it an aesthetical advantage over the PS1 and Saturn.

    >> Gameboy Color:
Man, do I love this beauty, I have such fond memories of those times! Pokemon battles via link cable, 'nuff said!

    >> XBOX:
I consider it the most advanced and powerful of its generation, and of course because of the implementation of LIVE.

    Least favorites:

    >> PS2:
Although I love more than quite a few titles, I don't love the console itself, way too many crappy titles out there.

    >> Jaguar, Virtual Boy and Tiger.com:
Never had the chance to play them but I know I'd surely dislike them, specially the Tiger.com :p

    Favorites:

NES - best games/memories.. need I say more?
SNES - best games/memories.. same as above..
3DO - coming from the SNES it was a huge upgrade, and maybe it sounds crazy but I loved the games!!! need for speed, road rash, twisted, fifa, return fire and so on..!
PS1 - again a huge step forward after owning the 3DO, loved the games.
Xbox - actually not really legit here because I loved it because of XBMC =)
    Dreamcast - just great games!

    Least favorites:

Jaguar - Biggest ripoff ever! I only liked Alien vs Predator.
Xbox 360 - Great games and It was in my fav list first but after experiancing 4 RRoD I gave up on this sucker!
32X - Come to think of this, this should be the biggest ripoff, as there was NO game at all I liked.
Megadrive - I only dislike this one because I owned a SNES, sonic games were pretty cool but games that came out for both consoles the SNES versions were almost always better!
Wii - The amount of shovelware is just shamefull.
PC-FX - Gamewise it sucks big time, but I love to collect this crap donno why!! help me!
CDI - god help anybody that bought this shit for games only!

    Undecided favorites:

Nintendo64 - great console don't get me wrong, but only for maybe one of the best games ever Mario64 and the Zelda's...other then that it wasn't that great in my eyes.
PS3 - just because it's more then a console, it's my media center. 360 has better games but PS3 is not far behind, plus I like free online play. but I can't put it in my fav list to prevent flame wars with 360 fanboys =)

The original Gameboy and the Dreamcast are the most fabulous gaming machines ever created. The Neo Geo is just awesome.

The Amstrad GX4000 was the most pointless, crap excuse for a games machine ever.

Oh yeah, that thing was such a failure. Interestingly enough, Commodore also made a similar system - the C64GS - which could only play C64 cartridge games, and not even all of them, since it had no keyboard. That's definitely one of the worst consoles ever :)

God only knows how many times I've answered something like this  But here I go again but only one each

    FAV: Saturn

    WORST: Jaguar

Why is the Jag' my worst? Well, because it was total crap yet fan boys still try to say it has something worth while and always comes Tempest. Yes, that is a very good game but everything else screams amateur bollocks or rip off or Amiga port. I still remember in the UK Mean Machines magazine an interview with Atari saying that the jaguar could pull off a better version of Daytona USA than the Saturn. Yeah, right. All Polygon racing games on the jaguar were worse than Saturn Virtual Racing and that was really poor.

At least the CD-i was crap to all, even the fan boys. 3DO is also another crapola console in my eyes.

My favourite game system above all is the SNES.
It had great sound (which is very important to me), the library was impressive and the controller was awesome. It had a sense of... advancement, innovation... that would never again be seen in a videogame console.

The other systems I love are the Dreamcast and the Xbox 360. The dreamcast has all those weird games, again, tons of innovation, great graphics, and is always fun to play. It's like having the arcade at home. I think it's the best system of the modern generations. Add two arcade sticks to it, and you have the fighting gamer's or the shooter fan's heaven. The 360 is the equivalent for this generation. It's got all of those awesome Dreamcast-ish downloadables, and many great disc games too.

Also, I love to collect everything from the Atari era, even if it's Trash. The 2600 has a place in my heart, as does the ColecoVision and Intellivision. Hell, I even got an Atari XE the other day. I'm looking for a 5200. I know it sucks ass, but it's so awesome in a cheesy kind of way!
    --------------------------

    Least favourite systems:

I'd say the Jaguar, but I've played it only once and I'd really like to get my own unit and play tempest on it.

I could complain about the PSX and PS2, but the truth is I've played them both to death and they have so many great games, so I wouldn't be able to list them as "least favourite".

Hell, even the Wii (once you hack it and make it "homebrew accessible") has its upsides. I have a lot of fun with mine
PS3, however, is an arrogant and inaccessible system. It's expensive, and the fanboys... god, the fanboys! I'm sure MGS4 is great, but for everything else, I have my 360. I'd only get a PS3 as a BluRay player. I hear FFXIII does look gorgeous on it, though.

I'd say the PS3 is my least favourite system... but I'm sure I'd get one if it were 200 dollars and enjoy the living fuck out of it.

I used to want a PS3 for Blu-Ray but now there's a lot better Blu-Ray players for a lot cheaper.

Sega Saturn - All of my favorite games of all time are on it. The Panzer Dragoon trilogy, Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru, Blast Wind, Radiant Silvergun, Hyper Duel, Guardian Heroes, Batsugun, etc. Its also IMO the best console for 2D shooters, I don't care what Cave fanboys say. :p

I also love the Dreamcast, SNES, NES, Master System, Genesis, Xbox360, Xbox, and Sega CD. :)

    Least favorites:
    PS1, PS2, PS3. Overhyped nonsense IMO.

On a side note, I am one of the few individuals that actually likes the Virtual Boy and the Jaguar. I understand why they are both awful, but on the Virtual Boy I actually had a fair amount of fun with Vertical Force, Mario Clash, Wario Land, Mario Tennis, Teleroboxer, and a few other titles. On the Jaguar my Dad and I both loved Alien vs. Predator, Iron Soldier, and Attack of the Mutant Penguins. And my one friend that had a Jaguar and I both love the hell out of BattleSphere. Shame I'll probably never witness the 32-player action that game has. :crying:
