    cheetah bug
cd32 pad by competetion pro (looks similar to the above image of CP's md pad but grey, four buttons with L/R triggers with switch array)
arcade joystick/trackball (any peripheral by JPL leisure UK and the next can get to f*ck!)
dreamcast joystick (official, and took over a decade of short tempered gaming, still strong! used for ps3/computer nowadays)
    dreamcast pad
wavebird (takes the shit and STILL it haunts me, quality build)
xbox original chunky pads (NOT into that 's' design at all)
    .....
madcatz ps2/xbox crossover compatible pads (not made anymore, the ps2 pads worked with the madcatz xbox receiver. shame it wasn't the other way around!)
    ....
    too many to list....
    ...
    i'm out! :friendly_wink:

XBOX 360 as my first, N64 stock as my second. Awkward at first with the trident shape but I got in the habit of holding the middle trident spear with my left hand and the outer right with my right hand. Became an extension of my arm for hundreds of hours of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Sega Saturn (japanese), Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, Logitech Cordless Action Controller (PS2), Dual Shock 3 (the triggers aren't as good as the 360 controller, but i still like it)

I thought that for AGES, then I had no batteries to hand, or was one of the other players and quickly realised that, for me anyway, the original wired Gamecube pad is better. They feel better weighted, and are a slightly nicer shape, and of course they rumble. I think it's because I'm now so used to rumble with more modern pads.

A close 2nd for me is the 360 pad. The Xbox Controller S was very good, then the 360 pad polished it off. The sticks are in the right place, and have decent accuracy and the pebble shaped buttons are a joy.

Digital pad wise, the SNES has the perfect D pad and button layout.

Actually, honours to the Wiimote, very versatile with movement and NES pad layout, and that's before including a Nunchuck, or dual wielding..

I sort of agree. I do miss the rumble, but the lack of wires makes up for I think. I think the Wavebird is actually somewhat lighter than the original GC pad, and the lack of rumble probably makes the battery last longer - and it does last for a very long time.

The Sony SCPH-1080 It's lightweight well-made. Originally made for PS1 sometimes works on PS2 and if it came out in USB format than it could be used for more, perhaps even the PS3.

Either the Saturn v2 or Mega Drive 6 button controller are my favourites, they've probably had the most responsive d pads and buttons of any controller I've ever tried, always a pleasure to use these controllers. N64 controller isn't bad either.

My favourite modern controller is the Xbox 360 (not even had my hands on and xbox one controller yet!). For older console, as a few others have said the GameCube controller is great, especially for homebrew on the wii.

If not for the terrible d-pad, the 360 controller would be perfect. It's my favorite modern controller.
I think my favorite overall would have to be the SNES controller. The button layout is perfect (and is still used to this day largely unchanged) and is super comfortable, although it is a bit clunky for fighters. And I have to agree with dc16, as the SNES ASCII PAD is my favorite SNES controller. It's especially useful (to me) for RPGs when grinding/battling tons of easy enemies, with turbo and auto fire. And it otherwise feels exactly like a regular SNES controller.

As far as modern gaming goes, the 360 controller is far and away the winner. The only thing that really lets it down is the big blocky battery pack, but now that I've installed a rechargeable backplate for it it's basically perfect. Microsoft makes such solid, sturdy controllers. When I spent a month playing the original Xbox almost exclusively and went back to PS2, I was really shocked at how flimsy the Dualshock is (The Xbox Controller S is great, too, btw.)

As far as retro gaming (this might be controversial), the original US Saturn pad is perfection. It really molds to my hands in a way that I've never really experienced with any other controller. The D-pad on that thing has got to be the greatest ever made, smooth as silk and perfect for fighters. Speaking of fighters, once you've played on a six-button controller there's just no going back to anything else. Why is six buttons not the industry standard??

As for modern analog controllers, easily the GameCube controller. And for a more classic type of controller the Japanese Saturn controller.
There is also a special place in my heart for the Vectrex controller, it just feels great but not that handy outside of arcade type games.

Gamecube controller is good, only thing about it that needs improvement is how the top left and right shoulder buttons have a delay after they are pressed down ( slow response ) so if that was fixed it would be a 10/10 star rating as of now I'd give it a 9/10.

Gamecube shoulder buttons are triggers, like our modern systems. Too bad not many games took advantage of it, since now every freaking game loves triggers.

Original PS1 controller -That the best controller ever made! Period!!! This is great for playing Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot.

Gamecube - controller are pretty damn good. It may doesn't look good but it feels good and comfortable.

Sadly, PS2 controller feels cheap... for some reason, so I use PS1 controller with analog stick instead.

XBOX360 - controller is okay but the joystick wears out but my main concern is becoming stiff and often get stuck. The D-Pad is just fucking terrible. I'm on fourth Controller because of joystick issue. Shitty controller ever built in my opinion

XBOXONE - controller has improved and I love the trigger feedback. Great for racing games.

PS3 controller dualshock 3 - just good as it get. I have no issue what so ever after nearly 10 years of use but the trigger become more sensitive because the plastic guard inside do break.

PS3 controller Sixaxis -is probably my second favorite controller. No problem what so ever. Unlike Dualshock 3 trigger.

Super Nintendo controller - Decent and love button itself. Love pressing the button down and so is L and R. Enjoy alot for Street Fight 2

Dreamcast controller - Good but not much to say about this... apart from joystick which do break and become loose. Can be fix with the superglue. Done that altease four times. VMU memroy card are amazing too

Sega Saturn model 2 controller - nicely fit in the hands but it does make rattle noise alot because of the buttons and D pad.

PS4 controller, best controller to date in my opinion. I tried it but I don't own the PS4 yet.

Conclusion - My three top favorite controller of all time is.....

    1. PS1 controller (without Analog stick)

    2. Gamecube controller

    3. PS3 controller Sixaxis

Too me, it is the best controller ever made. Of course opinion are opinion. I don't understand what you mean backward release? Original PS1 controller exist since December 1994 and discontinue around 1997 or 1998 and that is where PS1 controller with analog sticks comes in.

My experience that early model of PS1 Controller with analog stick is better than later model and PSone controller because the cords are thicker and analog stick is more smoother. I'm not sure If you have notice that.
