Well here's the thing, tred to get error 12 so I could unlock the hdd by unplugging the ide from the dvd drive and I get error 11 :( also tried a new hdd and I did get error 12, but after building the hdd from scratch I get error 5 and can't lock it. Any idea on how to fix this without a modchip? Thanks in advance :)

Have you gotten the timing down on unplugging your HDD? I remember I only did that once when I was trying to softmod using an old PC (and that was even harder because I didn't have a TV to hook up the Xbox to) but I remember it took me several tries until I could get the hard drive to unlock AND be recognized by my PC.

However fixing without a modchip... If you have some decent soldering skills you could TSOP flash the console as it's a 1.0 - This is the guide I followed:

I'm almost 100% sure I have the timing just fine. I have done it this way a lot. Now the tsop, I have does this also but isn't it kind pointless jf I can't access the dash?

Xbox EEPROM reader, extract the EEPROM data, burn XBOXHDM with your dumped EEPROM and lock the drive to it.

Just considered that and yeah thinking about it I believe my brain is still in the process of waking up - I'm not sure if you can access any games or dashboard as you said. I forgot you'd need to boot into a game/recovery disc to reflash BIOS.

Yes. Otherwise, your only other option is to boot an exploit and extract your EEPROM.

Ugh well it's going to be a long day trying to get it fixed :/ looks like I'm going to have to buy a modchip at some point unless I can somehow unlock the hdd. So even trying a new hdd won't work? I mean I can get error 12 just fine without the stock hdd.

I'm confused by your original post.

Do you have the original HD that came with the Xbox? if so why are you trying to hotswap it?

The new HD must be locked to the Xbox motherboard, or you will get error 5.

If you are trying to softmod the system by hotswapping, then timing is key, you only have a couple seconds to connect the HD to the PC after removing the Xbox IDE.

Sorry it was a lot going night. The original hdd has error 16 so I have been trying to fix that. I do have another softmodded xbox and have tried hotswap with that also. But no matter what I try I can't get error 12 only error 11.

Again, it sounds like since you're trying on a second Xbox that it is timing. Although if you have an error 16 I believe that is a dashboard error which could point to the original dashboard files being gutted or your hard drive has failed - I myself just had this error on my TSOP flashed Xbox and when trying to do anything with the hard drive itself I got nothing but I/O error. Slapping in a new drive fixed that right up but again - My Xbox is TSOP flashed.

This is the guide I used to look at errors, as you have two Xboxes (one of them being modded) you might be in luck!

You hotswap as soon as the LED turns red. That's it.

No problem. I remember being stuck at the exact same thing. Whatever you do, backup your EEPROM and save yourself problems.
