2DS screen is one screen with a bezel over it?

People in Japan are saying it's one screen... might be interesting as far as hacking to a poor man's is-capture.

We already have capture devices for the 3ds and 3dsxl, over USB :)

Yep it's been stated by a few USA sites to be a single LCD panel.

Wouldn't that affect battery life? I mean, even if the rest of screen is hidden and just showing black bars, they're still using power. Right?

I for one would be interested in this system if it has one large screen. If it does, then that means the chances are the whole screen is touch capable. Cut the excess plastic off, mod the firmware, make some homebrew, BOOM. Tablet on the cheap that can also play all 3DS and lower games.

Wait, how does that work with the touch screen? Is half the screen a resistive touch screen or something? Is the entire thing a touchscreen?

    EDIT:
An answer to my question as I post it. How convenient.

Maybe, but not enough to matter. The system has an extra 30 mins of battery life over the standard 3DS (I think). It did just occur to me, however, that the 2DS would not be able to go idle. You can't just close the system to make it standby. StreetPass would be a problem too unless it has a way to lock key presses similar to the PSP.

It has a sleep switch on the side very similar to the PSP.

Hard to say. There is a good chance the older screens were more of a power drain (in 2d) then this screen. The gap between the top and bottom screen is heavily reduced from other units. Over all though, the 2DS is listed to get an extra .5 hours of play time over the Org 3DS.

The chances of that happening are slim to nil. Piracy is just now barely getting off the ground in a very limited setup (really old fw), let alone actually hacking the fw. There is also the chance the touch layer of the screen only covers the bottom half of the screen and not the full LCD (quite easy thing for them to do with a pressure touch screen).

I thought of that too but then figured they didn't do that because of the height difference between the top screen protection cover and the lower screen. Why make them so far apart if it's one screen? I figured it was to cover the touch section on the top part of the screen.

They have to be far apart so that all games look the same. Many games are designed around having that empty space between the two screens.

Edit: Read that entirely wrong. Getting tired I guess. But still, I would wager it is to give it the same look as the 3ds does currently.

Most likely to keep people from thinking the top screen is also touch sensitive and scratch up the LCD plastic

And I was at the very beginning thinking "why don't make it one big screen instead of two, since there is no hinge anymore which would hinder this issue, and therefore would be much cooler". And what did they? They did in fact one single screen, but then just faking two screens with it.

Strange - I thought two smaller screens would have been cheaper than one big one. Will be interesting to see this thing opened up.

If it is then homebrew should be cool.

From what I've heard (and had posted, but it was lost and it's not on a site I often frequent (EDIT: found it http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/nintendo-2ds-has-one-large-screen-not-two-21265)), the whole screen is touch, but there will be a plastic barrier on the top screen, which (theoretically) could be removed.

Also, I saw in another post on the 2DS thread that there was an unboxing from Europe (Germany, I think). I'm not sure if it's actually been released, or that was a media kit provided by Nintendo.

I think this is one of those things we will have to wait till it's out to fully confirm.

Also the unboxing is because nintendo gave media in some region units to play with. A few sites have posted impressions based on their hands on time with the device. Hopefully one of those sites will crack the thing apart so we can see the inside.

The top part of the screen won't be touch sensitive. Nintendo is far to cheap for that. It's just a normal lcd with a touch screen added to the bottom part. Just like they didn't use a build-in touch screen lcd for the old nds but just a normal lcd with an extra touch screen on top.

The next generation of the Nintendo handheld will be a tablet. This 2ds is like some mutant inbetween two major steps in evolution.

Even if that was possible, you'd have a really small tablet with really old hardware. What'd be the point?
