I couldnt find an existing thread like this so i figured i would start one. Don't know if you guys like to go 2nd hand store shopping but i usually never walk away without finding something worth buying. I always keep my eyes peeled for gaming stuff. Last week i got a Game Boy Player for Gamecube for $1. Yesterday i got got a brand new pair of Cole Haan's for $10. Well worth it. they still had the Neiman Marcus tags inside the shoes. How about you guys? Any epic finds out there?
The Sims and 3 expansion packs for $5. Most of their gaming stuff was overpriced and had a general lack of selection. $4 for a used Dreamcast controller? Maybe if I wasn't hurting for cash sure.
I found a 1985 Yamaha Natural Sound Amplifier A-27 for $9 at the Salvation Army the other day. Someone tried to hide it in the women's clothing section (that clever bastard), but I caught it out of the corner of my eye. I looked it up on eBay and it seems to go for $100+!
No such luck here, every second hand seller here thinks everything concerning video games is rare and priceless, even a dime a dozen titles for NES and SNES, if you're lucky, you'll find badly worn AMIGA games for under a dollar.
The best find I ever had was a mint CIB NEC SuperGrafx for 580 yen at Shirakawa Kanteidan. I really think they made a mistake, but that's what the price tag said...so that is what they have to charge me. I thought maybe it would be broken, but they would say it on the box if it was. I took it home and played it and it worked fine.
Wow. I guess I have it made here in the states. I've got about 10 stores in close proximity to my home that do resale only. Most of them just put video games out at a blanket price, usually $4, that includes everything from NES to Xbox360. Dreamcast and PS1 games are usually stacked with the music CDs and sell for $1 each. Some stores though seem to think that anything electronic is made of gold or something. A "Goodwill" i was at yesterday was selling an Xbox for $100, and it was well worn and covered with stickers and some kind of cola residue. But other times you can find awesome stuff for cheap. I wont forget the day i bought Xenogears, Parasite Eve, and SotN brand new still wrapped for $1 each. One major downside to these stores though is that they are usually filled with rude pushy people.
I'm not a thrift store addict or anything like that, but I try to hit them whenever I get a chance. So, not daily, but I try to hit some once a week I don't know why I even go. I think the only time I've ever found any video games that were worthwhile to me was a few (maybe 4) years ago. A copy of Pitfall 2 for 2600 for a buck. I am, to some extent, to a point where theres not really much that I need to buy---I own pretty much everything that is common enough that you'd expect to find one in a thrift store sometime---most US domestic consoles, several classic PCs---but I'd still buy some of that stuff again if they EVER came up---and I always want more games. Never see a damn thing. Craigslist has been infinitely better to me. If second hand shops could be half as good to me as Craigslist, I'd be on cloud nine.
I've missed a lot of incredible higher-priced items... One was a MINT Crumar Orchestrator (<-link) for 100 bucks. The day after was half-priced electronics, and they were about to close. I woke-up early the next day and showed-up about an hour after they opened and it was gone. I've gotten loose consoles (NES, N64, DC... and a Gen 2?) for ~$3-5. Various controllers for a couple bucks, I've found a few almost unused N64 controllers before to keep in a box and preserve the analog sticks... Black Sega Sports controller for 98 cents... Then I've found plenty of excellent games at this particular shop. Complete Shenmue mixed in with the CDs for $3, Secret of Mana (loose) for 1.50 (along with some other decent semi-demanding titles like Yoshi's Island, SM All Star, etc)...
It's worth ringing around your local ones and asking them to call you when they get videogame stuff in, that way you get first dibs, and they tend to be ok with selling electronics stuff. I picked up a brand new original GameBoy (as in the big brick green screen one) for a few quid, looks like it had never been used.
Here it's all crap, as mentioned before they think anything old/retro and gaming is worth a billion and such ask stupid prices for old crap that is falling apart or has no value what so ever. I gave up looking.
I got 7 official PS2 memory cards for £3.50, an official multitap for £2.50, and a network adapter still boxed with instructions, network setup CD and ethernet cable for £7 recently.
The few times I've hit them around here, when I do find games they're crap, like a handful of Genesis sports games, and they're still overpriced ($5+). Funny enough they're often in glass cases with other <$10 electronics... These places are pretty ghetto though. Certainly games of any value are picked off by the employees before touching the sales floor.
i bought a wired x-box 360 controller for 50 cents once, and some antique lights for like 3-6$ a piece.
Southern Florida has crap in terms of games at 2nd hand shops. Best I found was a really hairy and dirty power glove. Didn't even bother asking how much. Then again I don't go to 2nd hand stores too often so that might explain why I can't find much at them.
I got an NES for $5 at a thrift store once, which I thought was a pretty good deal. The connector needed to be replaced, but other than that it works perfectly. I assume that's what you mean by a second hand store, right?
