unfortunetly 360s have always and probably will always be very unstable. I mean I've had 3 NEW 360s. Yup you guessed it all got 3 red lights also :/
Yeah, my first one RRoD'd on me, and the replacement isn't any better (the DVD drive seems flakey, as in DRE's and bad noises that make me think that the disc may shatter in the drive eventually). As much as it voids the warranty, one may want to look at a 360 waterblock from Innovatek (~80 euros (!), but is one block that cools both the CPU and GPU). Hell, they even have one for the PS3 in the same design (for the same price).
Mega CD - Still Works Saturn - Still Works PS1 - Still Works PS2 - Still Works GameCube - Iffy Wii (3 months old) - Iffy 360 (20 months old) - Still Works I have only every had problems with Nintendo hardware, my PS2 has defied the gods with it's lifespan, even years playing DVD's hasn't killed it.
The Wii also has overheating issue, causing random dots to appear on the screen, like flashing dead pixels.
The entire thermal design of the X360 is to blame for RLOD, pretty much every expert on the planet that has seen one thinks the same. Making 65nm chips is just a way of reducing costs, since silicium is getting pricey lately. It helps with the overall temp, but it would be easier to rearrange the internal airflow and slap and extra heatsink here and there than reducing the chip's die if solving the overheating issues is what they want.
Definitly. My new 65nm Elite barely even gets warm, even after a long Gears of War session, Halo, etc. It's pretty amazing how much cooler it runs; my room actually gets cold now....no more 360 space heater! I imagine the temp change would help some with RROD, but oh well. A 65nm GPU should be awesome-er! With the Wii overheating, I hope I'm lucky. My Wii gets a bit warm on the sides, but the outgoing air isn't warm at all compared to my friends launch Wii's.
A tip to people with heat problems on the wii.. don't enable Wii connect24 service as there has been reports that it could be it that cause it b\c when in this mode the wii will stay on, but the fans wont. I can't say how true it is that this is causing problems.. but I've read a few posts on it and it sounds somewhat likely.
That does make sense, as it feels pretty warm when it's on. Is there even any real reason to leave it on? Doesn't seem like Wii has much in terms of online stuff, aside from the cool channels.
It does mean you can turn it on & immediately have current news/weather. The other reason to leave it on is that you'd know quicker if any of your Wii pals have messaged you, or if there's a special promo or something. These aren't terrifically compelling reasons to leave it on, but so far that's how I've left mine setup (although I did shut them down completely when my air-conditioning died in the summer...). I did note that it's the underside of the unit that gets warm when left on standby, so they're probably better ventilated if placed upright/on their sides in their Wii-stands.
no problems with any of my hardware ever outside of the NES obvious problems but even then it's slim to none.
Yeah, the Wii gets really hot in WiiConnect24 mode. I bet thats what killed mine. I also don't see why the Xbox doesn't have the (now cooler) CPU below the DVD drive, and the GPU where the CPU is now, as if its the GPU that get so hot, it should do with more airflow. Or if it's an issue with lead-free solder, use a better kind! Although I'm sure M$ have gone over all the options and reasons.
So whats nintendo's policy on the burning Wiis? will they replace the units? or just say "getz backt in ze zoup line!"?
Free replacement. I even get to go to Nintendo's Canadian headquarters for a replacement, since I'm so close to them.
Just sent two back for repair (under 3 yr warranty) so will see what revision of mobo MS are returning here in the UK. Thus far they've been returning like for like on my machines, but the last Premium I sent back is still running - that said, I think I use it about as much as my PS3 these days. Not lack of interest, but definately lack of time.
If you like the backwards compatibility, get an 80GB PS3. Otherwise, I would wait until the 40GB version drops in price a little more.
