My (previously mentioned flakey) replacement 360 just died (got home from work and fired up R6: Vegas, game froze, reboot into RROD). The only thing different i get to do this time is send the power brick with the 360, and I get another 1 month Live subscription card (haven't used the first one yet). The sad thing is, my original 360 lasted about 20 months...this one just barely over 1 month, and I've only played two titles on it (R6: Vegas and Mass Effect) and I haven't used the 360 as much as I could've. A big WTF here...
I obtained another 360 at the weekend which is a UK spec Core edition. The seller claimed it was RLOD all the time, but I bought it without any of his accessories etc. The ONLY time I can get it to go RLOD is when I plug in the wireless adapter. I've cabled it up and performed an update, it seems to behave itself and then I thought 'Perhaps it will over heat' so I popped in a games disc and wandered off for an hour. I came back and it was fine. So I powered down plugged in the wireless connection and got RLOD! Took it out...it was fine! Power issue perhaps? Oh, I did get his PSU btw, so it's not that - works fine on my other unit, and I changed my PSU for his to see how this unit would react.
If you're asking me, it's a replacement Core (non-HDMI) for my Core (non-HDMI), and I'd venture to guess it was a "fixed" refurb sitting at the repair center in Texas.
Sounds like the wifi connector is buggered. Does it do the same on another system? I doubt it would be a power issue.
I see, anyway, I'm trying to see what the actual failure rate of the new flacon units, but alas most forums got tired of "got RLOD?" threads like a year ago, and is pretty hard to make a survey on that.
I believe it realy comes down to who built it. I found on the 360 based on how tight you make the innser screws it can warp the fan cover. causing issues. If the board is not warped yet you can loosen the inner screws. either way it sucks but it is the luck of the draw. I had bad luck on the ps2, the laser went out after 2 months, my friends has worked since day one. on the xbox and 360 my systems i bought just after launch are still running fine.
Theres no way your going to work out the failure rate. Just buy one and see. Many people have release day ones that work perfectly.
Awesome! Now you can go play... uh... :110: The only game I'm looking forward to is LittleBigPlanet. I seriously cannot wait for that game. It looks fantastic!
I recommend the PS3. I'm lucky enough to have gotten all the "next gen" consoles, and it is by far my favorite. I have had some problems with my 360, but no RRoD yet (and hopefully not at all), almost none with the PS3 (Made too many pumpkins in oblivion- about 12000 -and it froze, big surprise), and none with the Wii. Everyone I know that has though about a PS3 makes the argument that no one plays on the PS3 online, but I have yet to run out of people to play, and most of the people on XBL are quite a bit ruder than on the PSN.
I've played the Burnout demo with a few ASSEMbler folks online, I think I took DotCal out a fair few times! I think the games on the XB360 give it the edge at the moment, but I am interested to see what happens when the PS3 exclusives start rolling out this year and HOME sees a release. If it wasn't for the XB360 being banned I'd be playing on that a lot more than I am currently, although the new Linux stuff might change that soon! That would make for a very powerful desktop machine indeed, assuming it doesn't die on me.
I think this year will be the making of the PS3, people are getting tired of the RRoD on Xbox 360`s. Also there are more games of better quality coming out.
Im still waiting for some decent PS3 games, then I can finally clean the dust off my PS3 and put it to some actual good use.
