Er, so back to what I said about the game being made or not. If they don't have the proper budget and business model, they aren't going to make it. These companies exist to make money. The amount of effort it takes to develop a fighter is over the top compared many genres including competitive ones so if the reward isn't worth the risk then why would they even bother?

Fighting game fans remember the drought of new releases in the mid-2000's. How long were fans playing 3S and MVC2 before SF4 and MVC3 came out? I'm seriously doubting fans want to wait that long again so they have to put with this kind of business model or watch their favorite genre disappear.

It was better in the late 1990's and early 2000 because you had time to really get in to your fighter. These days there seems to be a new one churned out every few months. Too many IMO.

I bought Mavel VS Capcom 3 and have hardly touched it. It just doesn't have the magic of the original and the 2nd game.

This is how I boycott Capcom:

I don't buy their stuff anymore. Not even used. Because all they do is release games full of fanservice, and then release some more fanservice on DLC on top of that. Seriously, why are people still falling for this crossover hype bullshit?

The only way for the fighting game genre to die is to drop a few nuclear bombs. There will always be a market for new games if Capcom or Namco go bankrupt (not going to happen), so there's no need to defend these companies.

So, I'm perfectly fine playing SSF2X. It's with out a doubt their best game and I'm 99.99% positive that they will never make a better one. (They don't even want to.)

EDIT: I do accept that there are people who are looking forward to these games. If they want to play them, fine by me. But there is no need to personally defend a company if other people criticize them.

I actually prefer to have new games come out, because it levels the playing field and you don't have to always play against people who've played a game for a decade. Plus, it helps new people get into fighting games, even though I'm sure all the worst elitists at places like Shoryuken would love to keep the genre as their own personal circle jerk.
And besides, it's nice to have the genre back after a decade of it being practically dead.

Perhaps you don't appreciate it as much because of the amount of games in the genre coming out so you don't have a lot of time to give to it but still. And after all, it is a case of more of the same.

I don't even get why people buy fighting games who don't play competitively, which I think is the focus of developers these days.

I guess there's not as much single player content, but still.

I think you're underestimating the amount of fighters that there used to be available too. People get into whatever they want to play competitively, unless we're speaking on different spectrums.

There have always been loads of 1 on 1 fighters. I don't even remember any dry patch without any but I find Capcom's latest offerings too sterile or "factory produced". They just don't seem to have the buzz of the old games. Playing Marvel Vs Street Fighter on the Saturn is still a blast as is the DC follow up.

Sure, companies like Capcom are sponsoring and co-operating with various tournaments and events. But! The new games are much more streamlined than the originals, and have simplified controls. So, while the new games are easier to pick up and do get "new blood" into the scene, they don't seem to last very long, which in turn hurts competition.

Do you mean in terms of new members getting into fighting games or the games not lasting very long?

I find SSFIV AE easily as enjoyable to play as the Alpha series. Both of which are excellent. And then there's Third Strike which is a step above them both.

I think the games that are released straight to console do have an air of "factory produced" but without being played and tested in arcades they can't balance them properly imo.

Still, I think fighting games have enjoyed a successful recovery and will begin to saturate soon. Has been good competition at least.

I don't agree with Day 1 DLC, I think that's dumb. Having all the characters unlocked such as in SSFIV AE from the begnining was a great move IMO.

Honestly, i've been avoiding buying some games on release because of this. I don't dislike the idea of DLC, if it's made available months or even a year after the release date. This happened with games like Super Stardust HD and Gran Turismo 5 (although i reckon that on GT's case is because they're slow anyways...). For instance, i really like the MotorStorm series, have both Pacific Rift and Apocalypse. What DLC i bought? None. Even though i enjoy these games, some of the DLC are just lame. Cars and paintings.

Still, what pisses me off is a company selling a game for 60 bucks with all contents already in the physical media and then "releasing" tons of DLC that are just 10kb files to unlock what you already have. In the end the full game costs 100+ dollars. And then they complain why people buy used games!? WTF?!

I avoid getting anything from EA, Codemasters and CAPCOM these days. I got Dead Space at bargain bin price and Dead Space 2 Limited Edition (with Dead Space Extraction) for 40 dollars. Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition we're 29.99 Euros. I'll probably try Mass Effect when they are dirty cheap. Also wanted to check out Need For Speed Hot Pursuit and Shift 2, but all those DLC's and online pass crap made me think twice. I got DiRT3 on release and i regret it. The game has lots of Cars DLC that are already on the disc, just waiting for that damn unlock paid file.

I was really looking forward SFxTekken, but after this DLC on disc bullshit, Capcom can go to hell.

I mean the games, but I doubt the new members hang around once this flood of crossovers and upgrades dies out.

SNK did on disc DLC but I'm ok with the way they did it NESTS Kyo Mr Karate and Flame Iori were optional extras The game is not broken with or without them and doesn't feel incomplete with out them either.

Plus KOF XIII is awesome either way. SNK MADE SURE they released a finished game.

Apparently you're forgetting about KoF XII. Not that I can blame you, but what a clusterfuck that game was, DLC or no DLC.

The thing about DLC is that its catch 22. They could make all the content available for free day 1 but when day 30 and 60 comes around, all the causal fans will whine to capcom that theres zero DLC for the game. By having the dlc ready on disc, it saves them a ton of troubleshooting time to make sure the DLC integrates with the current game with zero glitches etc. Its basically a cost cutting measure for them while at the same time giving all those kids what they want, DLC to buy. Now its also a money maker as well which may even factor into the games budget when they green lit the game in the first place to be made.

I think DLC is just a trend that game companies are following and using to make money as well as offset the costs of making these huge games to begin with. On paper it is pretty lousy that your buying a disc with locked off content that you need to pay to have unlocked. But from a developer/studio point of view, they're giving the casual consumer who loves to buy DLC what they want while at the same time making it as easy as possible for them to deliver it by putting it all on one disc day 1.

Get a modchip and install the DLC manually. I mean shit you can have LIVE and hacked modes on the same box with the current hacks.

DLC on the disc is a cop out, plain and simple. By using the time during development cycles to create additional content solely for the purpose of charging extra for it and including it on the disc you make a mockery out of the consumer. Why not sell people cars with radios that can handle HD radio but disable it unless a one time activation fee is handed over? Or how about SD cards that have half the storage locked unless you cough up $20? Intel (I believe) was tossing around the idea of selling people CPUs that had cores/features locked that could be unlocked via software...for a fee. Man would they be shocked when that backfires.

I buy a copy of a long series of 0s and 1s encoded onto a piece of plastic with a reflective layer. Once I buy it all bets are off on what I can and will do with it as you no longer have control over that. I am not buying a license. I am purchasing a game. I will not feel guilty if I buy the game used for $10 and modify the game to give me what is on the disc already. I don't care if Capcom thinks it is illegal as I think what they do is (or should be if it isn't) illegal but they clearly do not care what I think. The only benefit I would have to buying the game today and paying for the "ODC" (on disc content, this isn't DLC) would be to play on Live. Quite frankly I'm done with live.

I get what you are saying. My point was that if they knew they wouldn't make a large enough profit without locking content and charging for it later, then they either shouldn't have such a high budget when making it, or keep making the game for the fans and settle with what profits they do receive, no matter how insignificant.

Either release it with locked content or no game at all? I'd like to say just release since we can hack the content out of the game anyway, but that would not solve anything long term and it would still screw over the average consumer who has no knowledge of how to unlock it in the first place.

I just wrote a long rant that nobody would give two shits about (I've got a bad habit of doing that...), so I'll sum it up by saying they should not make the game in the first place because if we allow this kind of anti-consumer tactics to go on, it'll only get worse from here. If we want them to stop doing this, then we quit enabling it, and if that means I can't play the sequel to my favorite game, then that's the price I have to pay to make sure we stop getting nickel and dimed.

Exactly. Capcom can kiss my ass if they think they're selling me a license when I purchase one of their games. No assholes, I'm not buying a license from you, I'm buying a video game. That's how it's been since the start of gaming, how it's been since I started gaming, and how it should always be.
