This thread and the one on the Sat 3D upgrade got me thinking... Xbox 3 / 4xx - wouldn't it be great if they touted it as upgradeable in the future via an expansion port ala Saturn?? They could get it out sooner than PS4 etc Made me chuckle anyway... Out of curiousity, with SLI / CrossFire become ubiquitous in the PC market and the Nvidia / ATI GPUs in the consoles being derived from their PC counterparts, surely the above idea in a modern context may actually be possible? Xbox 3 SLI compatible? Hmm back to thread, this rumour doesn't seem to make much sense, what would be the benefit to MS? To undercut PS3 as cheapest Blu-ray player? Surely they'd just be lining SONY's profits through licensing & royalties -- perhaps if it was to increase game storage but then there would be an uproar from current owners. Doesn't add up in my head, I remember reading somewhere on the net though that the next Xbox is well into development - it owuld make sense that BD would be the optical drive of choice there? Perhaps this is what's being sorted out provisionally?
It could be a last ditch attempt to make people who might think about buying the PS3 as a BluRay player and a games machine buy a Xbox 360 instead, although it would have to be cheaper then a 40GB PS3 and that looks unlikely...
I don't see the point. Since games will not be on BD-ROM, why not just wait till you buy a PS3 for Blu-ray? I wouldn't get another Xbox console just for Blu-ray. So I wouldn't get it until this Xbox explodes and needs replacement.
i like the idea of HD-DVD and BD on the same console, which by the way offers amazing online and the best next-gen games around!
so stating an opinion about a console with everything added-up is trolling? the only caveat of the 360 so far has been its low build quality - an issue sure to be addressed in the future, in which future (if ever) an SKU with BD enabled would also mean a sweeter deal considering the 360's library and Live.
speaking of blu-ray, a guy came into blockbuster and asked if we had any of the Indiana Jones movies on Blu-Ray. I said no. And he replied (and I quote), "Yeah, we've been watching them on regular ray. And was wondering if they're coming out on blu-ray anytime soon.":lol::lol:
This isn't true (link) I saw this rumor a few days ago and it didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time. Why would Sony let a competitor license their hardware so they could sell more consoles?
"On Friday, the Economic Daily News (via Digitimes) reported that Pegatron Technology has secured an order from Microsoft to manufacture Xbox 360 models with internal Blu-ray drives for release this fall." What does this mean then? Is this the rumor part then?
There is no reason MS would do that. So they can be a bluray player who cares their system is for games and red ring of death.
it's actually the reverse. Why would MS suddenly shift their strategy to bring bluray over to their console that has a larger installed user base, just for movies? The treated HD-DVD as an addon, and have said numerous times that the xbox 360 is games first and that they are looking to the future for digital distribution. There will be no benefit in MS adding bluray into the 360, except that Sony gets a chance to sell more bluray movies to people that would rather only have a 360 and the games it has. MS would have to get one hell of a deal on manufacturing and licensing from Sony to consider it. It would also show once and for all that Sony doesn't give one shit about the ps3 as a game console, but only care about pimping the bluray out to more people. Most of the console updates now are already for bluray playback features I never use.
LMAO! I agree with Barcode, it would be great to have both formats AND games on one console, but I'm not buying another one if it happens. I already did that to get an Elite. =( I think I'll probably just have the PS3 for Blurays, and get what I can on HDDVD.
I highly doubt MS will release a 360 with an internal Blu Ray drive. They pull less data off the disc per second than the standard DVD drive so I can't see how games like GTA4 (with streaming) would work the same.
Well, technically, since the Toshiba HD-DVD 360 drive is PC compatible with hacked drivers.. it should work with the PS3, no?
No way this is gonna happen... MS is already on hot water thanks to RLOD, releasing a bluray X360 which uses games on this format would be the proverbial kick in the balls that would destroy thier credibility in the gaming world forever. I see the Xbox3 as an hybrid Xbox-AppleTV, were you pay a subscription and get the hardware for free.
XBox3 will have a blu-ray drive. Sony wouldn't stop them putting one in an XBox360, each division is seperate and Blu-Ray has a number of licensees, not just Sony. But it doesn't make financial sense for MS to do it this time around. In a few years the drives will be much cheaper and faster. That will be the best time for Microsoft to employ the technology, in their next machine.
