    Thanks Wolverine :)

That game is the most requested one along with Tomb Raider and I will definitively do it! I've said I'll do Tomb Raider as next episode, but it's been a bit hectic with out of town visitors this weekend and also me spending way too much of my free time on making a complete non-3dfx accelerated games list ( http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=33483 ). Next episode should be out in a couple of days :)

New episode is out: Assault Rigs
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZna8WXC4ds

It's been a while since the last episode came out. I said I would do Tomb Raider, but I've run into some issues.

    1. Capturing 800x600 from the ATI Rage version of Tomb Raider is a problem, either I get black screen, poor performance or glitches. Since this is a Windows port I need to test more ATI drivers and find one that gives everything (performance, capture and no glitches)
    2. Been busy with Mist of Pandaria :p
    3. And making this list: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=33483

So in the meantime I just figured I would give Assault Rigs a shot. Assault Rigs was developed and published by Psygnosis in 1996. It is a tank game where the point is to get through a lvl picking up gems and power ups while shooting enemies. The ATI Rage version is a Windows port of the game while the normal retail PC version is MS-DOS native. The DOS version got its share of criticism as it was considered an inferior version compared to the Playstation. It promised 640x480 resolution in 16bit color, but only delivered 320x200 in the end. The ATI version is superior with higher resolution, mipmapping and texture filtering, but according to reviews from 1996 it didn't run very well on the first version of the ATI Rage chip, especially not in 640x480. Though in this video I show it running on a lot better hardware than was available at the release of the game.

Is there a way to run Fatal racing hardware accelerated on modern hardware? Or do I need an early graphics card and therefore a retro pc system?

The problem is that the game is statically linked to the card, meaning glide wrappers don't work. The only version you'll have a hope to run is the 3DFX version in a special build of Dosbox found here: http://ykhwong.x-y.net/, which emulates a voodoo card. From what I've heard it doesn't run very well. I have no idea how to make it work, better check out vogons.zetafleet.com for that.

For the best experience, having a retro pc system is the best in this case.

Thanks. The game is still fun. Playing it in svga mode with an arcade stick. It would be nice in a cabinet actually. One thing has aged badly though: All the speech and woohoos and announcer voices in general. Luckily theres a separate speech volume setting and after turning that to 0 its a lot better :)

Yes, I have actually been playing around with Battle Arena Toshinden. It is accelerated for the 3DFX Voodoo, Nvidia NV1, Matrox Mystique (only works with the original Mystique, not the 220) and the Creative 3D Blaster VLB & PCI. I own all cards except the Creative 3D Blaster PCI or VLB. I've been looking for this card for some time, but to no luck. Before anyone is asking, yes I do have a wanted ad in the marketplace section of Assembler games. If anyone have a card they want to sell or trade then please contact me!

That is the reason I've been holding back on that game. I did NASCAR Racing without the Blaster, and that was in my eyes a mistake as I now have to go back and redo it when I eventually get the card (which I hope I'll do someday).

I don't own a AWE32 sound card, but I tried the MIDI music on my Roland SC-55 and I think the CD audio wins hands down. I don't know if I'm spoiling too much for you, but I can say that the game runs well on all the 3D cards, but it looks a bit better on the Voodoo (as you would probably imagine).

I think I have a few Creative Soundcards in different computers in my parents' attic, I'm not sure which models though. I'll take a look the next time I'm home.

Wow, thank you for doing this! Man, I remember the Mystique version of Mechwarrior 2 having much more distinct texture mapping than that, it is great to see it again and in HD no less. One of these days I'm going to break down and make a 90s gaming PC again.

New episode is out: Wipeout on the ATI Rage

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG3hd1hu...e=g-high-u

Please note that English is not my native language and this was a test episode with the narration. I am not entirely sure if it was the correct thing to do, so it will probably be kept to a minimum in future videos.

Next video will be a requested one: Battle Arena Toshinden :)

Really like your comparison videos, and really liked the level and depth of narration on that one - it really adds to the video and makes it more enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!

Great work you're doing. I thought the narration was really good, actually. You should keep doing that.

By the way, I have a request if you're taking them: Jet Moto.

Thanks, but I think I'll hold it off for a while unless it's really needed (too much information which can't be delivered through short info messages). I strive to do as good as I can, and as you may have seen the episodes have increased in content and quality since the early ones (atleast I like to think so :p). The best would be if I could get some help by someone who is a native English speaker and wants to do the narration from the script I write.

The problem with Jet Moto is twofold. One, the PC version is only for Direct3D and Glide, meaning it's not very interesting to do a comparison on since they probably look very much alike graphically. If it were a 1996 or early 1997 PC game it would make more sense as the different versions normally had much bigger variances. To make an interesting comparison on that game you would have to include the Playstation version which would have to be run from an emulator since I don't own a PS1. That is the reason I've not included so much of the console versions, as it just becomes too much and I need to narrow it a bit down. The console versions also have alot more footage floating around on Youtube compared to the PC versions. I try and focus on the really early era of 3D acceleration for the PC when Direct3D wasn't dominant and every manufacturer had their own API. The large majority of game releases with 3D support came from bundled releases, which have been obscure and hard to find any information on (like Wipeout), which I also try to shed some light on. There are a limit on the amount of games I can do from this period, so maybe after that I can start to focus more on comparisons between console and PC versions.

Damn, i remember the days from Indycar Racing 2. Me and my friends could only dream about getting a Rendition3D videocard to maximize the whole experience.
