I think the make or break point for the 3DS will be word of mouth. If glasses-free 3D works as well as Nintendo hopes it will and doesn't give people headaches or cause a plethora of problems when trying to view, then I think Nintendo has another runaway hit on their hands regardless of price. If, however, the 3D technology isn't all its cracked up to be and winds up being more of a hassle (potentially to the point where most people just turn it off), then I wouldn't see the 3DS being successful.
Bull... Nintendo has always been an arrogant ass and always makes products for their needs and not others. The PSP has been a huge success. The problem is the DS has been an even bigger success. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417240 |System | LTD | | NDS | 32.051.123 | | PSP | 16.541.726 | If we take the numbers from wikipedia (not sure what the GBA's real numbers are), GBA's LTD in japan is 16.96 million I'll give you the PSP-Go as being a failure. That was a giant mistake. People need to get it through their retarded heads that SCE (Playstation division) has not a ****ing thing to do with PS Phone. Fuck the proper name for it is Xperia Play. It's all Ericsson trying to attach the Playstation branding onto one of their half baked phones (Ericsson makes really shity phones now a days).
I wonder how many more times you'll say this before you realise what you're saying is utterly ridiculous. The PSP has sold 62 million units worldwide. That's the same as the original NES. You'd have to be out of your mind to call it a "complete failure".
Yes and no The GC was a good console, yet it failed They resell the now outdated hardware in a shitty, uninspired me-too box that reeks of wannabe apple design, and add a motion control nobody would give a fuck about a couple years before. And to top it off: not only they charge MORE than they did for the GC, it sells a lot more than that one did. Add the fact that not only shitty games outsell the good ones most of the time, but a lot of people only use it with the pack-in game. Thats when nintendo really became arrogant, when they saw that no matter what the competition did or how much they lowered the bar, consumers were still buying their crap. And again the PSP was supposed to DESTROY the GBA/DS and blow nintendo out of the portable market for good, thats the only argument you could hear back in 2003/04. That and people laughing at the idea of a dual screen handheld...
The GC failed for many reasons. It also wasn't a technical marvel and had many short comings thanks to Nintendo. The n64 also suffered due to flaws in the hw. GBA hw suffers from many flaws. DS (OG) suffers from many flaws. 3DS suffers from many flaws. Wii suffers from many flaws. Seriously, there are flaws in many faults in their systems. Sure you might not know about them but I do (I've worked on a few of them).
I don't really get the Nintendo hate. They made a new 2D Mario Bros., brought back Donkey Kong Country (which is an excellent game), made the Mario Galaxy games which are hands down the best 3D platformers ever, published the sequel to Sin & Punishment, are publishing the new Mistwalker game, are bringing back Kid Icarus... The list could go on. But the point is, at this point in time it seems to me that Nintendo is doing more to make good games and appease a hardcore fanbase than either of the other console makers (both of which are currently chasing Nintendo's tail). Then again, I play videogames, and I guess good games are just more important to me than teh grafix! or whether or not I can facebook on my gaming machine...
The GC was at least in the same league than other consoles of it's generation, while the wii is so lowend that most games can't be ported to it Just look at CoD:BO in that thing: it looks worst than a lot of iOS games. My point here is that a 3DS at $300 isn't that crazy given nintendo's behavior as of late, it might backfire but then again it may not, and therefore become yet another money making machine.
Don't get me wrong. I love Nintendo from a gamer's perspective. I just don't like them from a developers perspective. Maybe I'm just cynical after all the time spent working on their HW then moving to sony based hardware. I'll most likely have a 3DS, my question is do i go with a USA model or JPN model (depends on if it's region locked like DSi was).
Graphically yes but GC suffered due to it's fixed pipeline and small media disc (which made Xbox->GCN ports more work then it should have been). Bull. You don't play many iOS games. Yes but again my point is $300 will bite them in the ass long hall. The short term gains at launch won't help for the problems they will have later. I mean seriously think about it. If the choice was between 3DS visuals at $300 vs 360/PS3 quality visuals at a slightly lower res (but much higher then 3DS) with compasitive multi touch screen (vs 3DS resistive 1 touch only) for $300. Is simply OMG 3D really that much of a value compared to everything else the other system will offer? (Removing Nin fans from the equation, who would fork $300 for nothing more then a Wii that ran at 720p). Sure Nin could just drop to $250 when the PSP2 comes out but dropping a price too soon is seen as a weekness in the market (besides also pissing off early adopters). If they drop the price later then sony could follow suit to keep on their ass vs nintendo aways being a step a head in terms of pricing (like on wii).
How do you know that? Not many have a Devkit or technical Docs so far... But you are right, 300 USD is way too much for a Handheld. If they go with that, i wonder how much they want for there next Console? 600 USD? more than 249 USD is too much and even this is still a lot.
Many have dev kits. You just have to know people with them. My faults with it. 1. Touch only on bottom and still resistive touch (so no multi touch) 2. CPU sucks balls 3. Low mem 4. Build quality is kind of crappy (everybody can see that in the CHN image leaks)
Yes I do, and infinity blade isn't the only game that beats the wii. And you need to think like somebody at nintendo's marketing dept does: you have been selling crap hardware for the last 7 years or so and people keep buying them no matter what. For them releasing it at $300 is a no-risk bet, after all it worked in the past. And lowering the price would hardly affect the image of the product if it was positive to begin with. Just look at the iphone, it had a major drop merely months after launch. The sad fact is that according to recent market surveys this trend of consumers buying expensive electronics is more or less a direct consequence of that same people being unable to afford things like a new car or house on this economy. Nobody would have payed $300 for a Walkman in the late 90s, but they gladly pay that and more now for an iPod
I'll have to disagree with you on that one. Rage is very iffy. Really shitty ass poly models. Wii could do Rage iOS. Dude. Again, It's been going on for much longer then 7 years.
Well... when the choice was between PS2 visuals at a slightly lower res vs. slightly beefed up N64 visuals, it would appear the gimmick won out. Its my belief that the face of the console wars really changed with the DS. Its no longer about power, its about the gimmick. This is why the Wii has almost sold as much as the PS3 and 360 combined. We shall see though. Glasses-free 3D is a bit more subtle of a gimmick, and if it turns out to be a pain in the ass to deal with I imagine the 3DS will not capture the same success as its predecessor.
But this is based on the assumption that the 3DS is the only system with a gimmic. So far rumors peg the PSP2 has having a few gimmics of it's own. So it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
So it can take Rage but couldn't handle Tech4? the former it's either too lightweight or the execution sucked ass. And yeah I know about ninty's track record, the GBC being a major part of it, but with the DS/Wii they crossed the line.
The PSP was not a complete failure, but it lacked and lacks heavy third party support and the profit margin on those 62 million units up until recently was non-existent. For better or worse, Nintendo doesn't subsidize their hardware which means they make money on it day one. Sony on the other hand has lost massive amounts of money on the PS3 and PSP. Personally, I love my PSP and think it's a better handheld than the DS/DSi/DSi-XL, but the numbers don't lie as far as who made money this generation and moved units.
Failure depends solely on what the goal was and if you were unable to reach it. The fact is that the PSP was supposed to blow nintendo out of the water, to do with portables what the PSX did with consoles. It didn't, so it failed
When I was in High School circa 2001-2005 I saw 0 PSPs being played and 1 (one) N-Gage. I had the only DS as well as the occasional Nomad day. Take that for what it's worth.
