Well looks like the sales have been so slow nintendo finally caved in at pricing it at the $170 mark. Looks like sales should pick up a bit more. I also imagine pressure from third parties helped in this decision. Takes effect august 12 as well price drops in other territories. http://kotaku.com/5825495/nintendo-3ds-gets-sudden-massive-price-drop
I knew when they announced they were releasing this thing that it was too soon. Next year would have been a better time to release it I think.
Just read about this on GBAtemp, looking forward to seeing it being discounted even more by the big supermarkets in time for Christmas or being bundled with a couple of pieces of 'free' software for the R.R.P. Now that Nintendo have officially dropped the price it's only a matter of time before someone breaks cover and does it at the magical £99.99 pricepoint.
And the Nintendo 64 launch. And the European PlayStation 3 launch. All three consoles came out too heavy and all saw massive price-cutting within a couple of months.
I was tempted to buy one, but at 249 euro which currently is 360 USD is just stupid. The cheapest now here in the Netherlands I can find, webshop: 217 euro/313 USD is still way overpriced. So I am happy to see that Nintendo put down their crackpipe and realised it was waaaaay overpriced. I was planning to pay MAX 160 USD, looks like it's finally going to happen in a couple of months, problem is.. it will be 160 euro as usual, as Nintendo/Sony/MS usually don't do exchange rates... And this all while the Japanese are going to pay 15.000y, which is 133 euro...
wow. I knew sales where not good and expected a price drop but really not till 2012 and a drop by this much is surpizing. If Nintendo isn't loosing anything still after that much of a drop then they where being beyond greedy with the launch price. I guess I should be a little peeved but oh well, free games and I knew I would be paying way too much getting one at launch.
I think it's pretty obvious they were being greedy, other than the 3D screen they're using old ass technology. They were trying to pull another Wii but failed.
I just found out that the 3DS does not support the 802.11n standard. Every other device I own that uses wifi supports it, but the 3DS does not, even though it's the newest such device I own. EDIT: Possibly the Wii doesn't as well. That said, I still enjoy it. OoT 3D is pretty cool. I'm looking forward to Star Fox 64 3D. Sure, they're just remakes, but they're remakes of really good games. I probably play my 3DS more than either my PS3 or my 360 (although I use my PS3 for video).
Oh something to think about for those getting one after the price drop. If you purchase the unit with in 14 days before the price drop, Bestbuy (and stores like it) usually offer a 14-30 day price guarantee where they will refund you the difference. Plus you'll still be early enough to qualify for the free NES/GBA games. =D
Nope, I'm pretty goddamn happy about getting 20 free games, 10 of which no one else can get. Also, Nintendo just brought a cannon to a knife fight in terms of the handheld war.
Does the GBA Virtual Console have a good selection? There's quite a few GBA games I'd like to play but the actual carts themselves can be quite expensive.
Currently there is no Virtual Console for the NES or the GBA. These things were brand new news today. So I guess the 3DS is going to have VC for GB, GBC, NES, GBA, PC-Engine, and Game Gear. :-0
Wow, didn't expect this cut so soon... Might be getting a 3DS afterall then On the other hand, too bad for Ninty for the sales not going too well.
