I just thought of something that would be really cool: if they would release ports of Virtual Boy games on the 3DS. It's something they could never really do before. They could also have an option to make it black and white instead of black and red, so it wouldn't bother your eyes.

Seems like a possibility, since they've said they're going to release GB games on it.

Haha I was still a bit high from the alcohol from the day before when I did that post. I didn't get a good enough go on it to make a final decision but the effect being used for the 3D was blowing my mind.

aha Charlie Sheen does enjoy spending his spare time on ASSEMblergames ;)

(Stupid imageshack for rotating the image. GRRR)

Well got my 3DS on friday. Didn't get much time into it untill saturday and a bit on sunday. I'd put in more time but i'm sick and don't feel like games. Hell on friday I had to drag my ass downstairs to get the thing from security 2 hours after it arrived because I rather be in bed.

    Quick Impressions on the HW
+ OS is better then previous systems
+ DS games on it look nice (has a slight image filter when in scaled mode).
+ Touch screen seems much more sensitive then it did on my DSi (ie fingers can easily click on things with out much pressure)
+ Buttons are clicky. I think people will like that.

= Build Quality is kind of iffy
= I don't like the d-pad being so low. Kind of cramps your fingers after a while.
    = 3D is a mixed bag

    - AR stuff looses it's fun after 5 mins. Really annoying keeping the cards in focus
    - Camera image quallity is not good (3d pictures I took look like crap)
    - Who the **** though the 3DS resolution is fine. :dammit:

If I had a choice between a 3DS that looks like a 3DS with it's 3 tone gloss finish and something with a matt finish and mono tone like my Lime Green DSi, I'd prefer the DSi to be honest.

    Impressions of Ridge Racer
+ It's another ridge racer and looks alright
= 3D is a mix bag, I find it works best on empty stages. Stages with lots of building on the side of the track become a strange pixel mess that distract you during races.
= Announcer is kind of annoying but after a while you learn to drown her out. I think she over compensates because in 3D the HUD is out of focus when trying to pay attention to the race.
    - Oh good the jaggies.

Over all, if you love ridge racer PSP/360/PS3, you'll still enjoy this one. If you don't, it's a good enough racer to keep you busy (Don't you dare buy asphalt 3d or I will take your 3DS away). 7/10

I'm pretty sure Nintendo fans will say I'm just being harsh but really I don't think the 3D justifies the price tag. Good games by the end of the year will but not at launch. Do I regret mine, no because I was getting one this summer anyways.

    -edit-
I'll give a better rundown on the 3D it self tomorrow. Still sick and low on energy to do it now.

Glad you don't regret it, maybe when you're feeling better it'll all be nicer.

I think my problems with 3d so far are
    1. (at least in ridge racer), not being given a clear point to adjust the 3D for the first time before starting a race. Sure there is the menu but they are a poor point to use to adjust the 3D. This could easily be fixed in future games by having an arcade style intro loop of the actual game before you get to the press start screen. Give the user a few seconds to adjust before they move on.
    2. I feel that in some levels the 3D becomes hard to keep in proper focus with tons of things moving about. I find the levels that work the best are once with sparse geometry on the side of the track.
    3. If you don't focus where the game wants you to focus then it becomes a distraction and messes you up during a race. In Ridge racer I focus on the track in the distance to know whats coming. I don't focus on what's near by.
    4. I feel you really get a feel for 3D with the slider at max and at mid (which I find more comfortable to play with) you only slightly get a sensation with out really feeling like you're looking at 3d.
    5. I feel the low resolution hurts a lot. The jagged edges in ridge racer become a distraction when 3D is on then off.
    6. Games will need to adjust to a new mentality of how to deal with Huds in 3D. In ridge racer they are out of focus while your looking at the 3d action. Tagging it around the player could help.

I personally think the 3D will probably work better in slower pace games that do a better job of masking the system's low res. Racers in 3D can work (Motorstorm rift in 3d is great) but I just don't think ridge racer does a good job. I think it will get better as the 3DS goes on but it's not a OMG THIS IS AMAZING!!! it's cracked up to be (imo).

Just to clear up any bits. I should note that while my eyes are not perfect 20/20, I don't need glasses for reading or every day life. My only issue comes from really far off text. one eye is slightly weaker then the other.

I have a question for 3DS owners, can you listen to music stored in the sd card while playing games?

This has been buggin me for a while.

I just played Pilotwings on one in Best Buy. A couple things struck me: it seems like the area where you can see the image in 3D is rather small. This might have been due to the distance at which I was holding it. Another thing: in Pilotwings, it's kind of difficult to switch back and forth between the pilot and the landscape. When you're focused on the landscape you see the pilot in double vision. Overall, though, it looked really cool. I'm looking forward to getting mine.

When people talk about the "Sweet spot" on 3ds this is exactly what they mean. the viewing angle for seeing 3D on the system is rather small.

One thing occurred to me: how is that going to work in games that use the motion sensor? If you move it around very much you lose the 3D effect.

The leap in graphics was the obvious draw for previous generation consoles and this is a side-step of the same school of thought, I guess.. but having seen a few videos of games with the 3D turned off, my question is this: Why no anti-aliasing? That stuff looks N64ish around the edges..not that I mind of course;)

Probably because nintendo is cheap and didn't cough up the dough for better hw. Hell I think it's kind of BS that to get 3D, games have to take such a big performance hit to drop to 30fps. If 3D is the big pull the system should be optimized out the ass to facilitate it. =/

If people want a 3DS purely for the gfx (and not 3d) then they should just wait for an NGP since the gfx difference will be pretty big. If they want if for the Nin games then they should wait a year and hope it drops $50.

The US kiosks are now up at Best Buy. I just checked it out.

The 3D effect is stunning. When you walk up to the unit, you see the effect pretty much immediately. This is absolutely not the Virtual Boy. In fact, the 3D slider is pretty minimal since it doesn't take much for your eyes to adjust to the 3D effect. They have the unit mounted so I wasn't able to see if the 3D adjusts as you hold it but again your eyes really find the 3D quickly so I'm sure its too big a deal.

The demo they have up is Pilotwings. Basically just one course where you fly around an island on a biwing plane going through rings. In 3D its just gorgeous. The plane has true depth to it as does the rings. I turned off the 3D just to see what it was like but immediately turned it back on as I found it a huge difference.

You do feel your eyes pull when you play though. I wear glasses and felt it pretty immediately. Its a very strong 3D effect, must stronger then you get at a movie theater I found, so it might strain your eyes quicker.

After playing for around 5 min, and going around that ring lap a few times I stepped away and noticed my eyes had become just abit unfocused, adjusting back to the 2D world. So nintendo's warnings are spot on. This isn't really a unit you can play for a long time unless you have eyes of steel. 30 min will be plenty. But the effect for many is going to be really worth it. Its that good.

Not sure myself how much I want to risk that much eye strain on a game system but I think Nintendo did an amazing job with this. Far more impressive than the wii in my opinion.

I hit up Best Buy today as well. I was appalled to see that the damn thing was already trashed. It really looked outright filthy.

I also had to get on my knees to play the things since I'm 6'6" and the kiosk was apparently designed for a midget.

Anyways, those complaints aside I was really blown away. However, I had a lot of discomfort with the 3D maxed out. But once I put the slider about midway I was fine. I guess the reviews saying that Pilotwings is not something to play with the 3D on max were spot on (though it makes me wonder why Nintendo would use it to demo the system...).

But yeah, I agree with DeckardBR, the 3D is stunning. Sunday cannot get here quick enough!

Oddly enough, I broke my glasses and had to get new ones - and when they were testing my vision, I realised I had stopped seing depth to an alarming extent, and hadn't even noticed.

When they tested my new prescription on those big metal glasses, I felt like the first five minutes of a 3D movie. Everything had depth again.

I had been living in the 2D world!

Even if you have only one eye, you're still living in a 3D world. Well, 4D if you count time, and possibly more depending on what they discover at the LHC. Anyway, your visual system perceives the world in 3D - and in fact, you can sense depth to an extent even with one eye.
