I played the shit out of the Halo PC demo. I can't believe there's still hundreds of people playing it online... I also played a lot of this PS2 demo disc that came with the console. It had Tekken 4 and Ratchet and Clank on it.
In 2010 I played the hell out of the Mafia 2 demo. Even though I had a Pentium IV with a geforce 8400gs, I ran it at around 15fps. I've put about a dozen or more hours into that demo. The demo had many glitches, you could even leave the restricted area and explore a bit of the map, until you would fall down.
Back when me and my brother first got our original Playstation, we played the demo discs quite often. We ended up buying the full versions of a lot of games that really caught our attention, but there are a handful that I have great memories of, despite never having played the final product. For example, I've played the demo versions of every (relevant) Crash Bandicoot game, but have actually only sat through the entirety of Crash Bandicoot 2 and Crash Bash. Somewhat more recently, I suppose, I played the Resident Evil 5 demo fairly regularly on PS3. Funnily enough, I tried out the online co-op quite a bit in the demo, but after having like, 80% of my partners get constantly killed by the chainsaw guy, I vowed to only ever play the local co-op in the full version... and that's what I did.
I remember playing the Rival School Demo for Playstation 1, alot couldn't get enough of it. It had only one stage as part of the demo, and if I can recall correctly it also had pocket fighters on the same disk. Lot of fun with both games.
Metroid Prime: Hunters - First Hunt Since it was the only DS software that came with my DS when I first got it. :|
I had great times with several demos! Battlefield 1942 was great and huge fun! The GTA 2 demo was also awesome fun, though it had a time limit. It didn't stop me playing it a really long time. Diablo 1 spawn demo, two or three random generated levels but so much to find for a demo! Last but not least, the Grim Fandango demo! I can still quote Salvador Limones in the LSA Bought every game because the demo hooked me. Did Demos change nowadays or do we only use lets plays and reviews to check stuff out? Somehow all got so fast paced for me o-o
Does the Doom shareware (i.e. technically not a demo) episode count? If not, the demo of the very first Worms. Couldn't even tell you how many times I've bought and re-bought those two games by now...
I played the bejesus out of the Dreamcast Generator volume 2 disc (I actually picked it up at a garage sale before I got a DC). MDK 2, Tomb Raider, THPS and DOA 2 mostly.
I still fondly remember the menu theme of the later Sega Flash demo disc series for the Saturn, and while most of the featured titles were repeats of what had been included on earlier volumes, I still played the excrement* out of them, to put it extremely politely. *Go ahead and look through my old posts if you don't believe me, but one thing you will quickly learn is that even when I'm losing my cool or being challenged, I rarely find the need to resort to profanity when presenting myself to others in a virtual environment. Incredibly, it's often a very different matter if you ever get to see me in person - unless you knew me in advance, you probably wouldn't even recognise me as the same person who always writes so eloquently online! I consider this an important part of my overall screen persona, so please excuse my decision not to repeat the original thread title exactly.
Oooooooh, great thread. I used to replay so many demos back in the day. The most played were Playstation underground & DC demo discs (played the MDK2 one alot). Most played must be the PS1 underground with the Japanese game demo for Ore no ryouri, which is my favorite PS1 game. (I even marked the underground case with a note indicating that the cooking game was on there) Played the one with Pa rappa the rapper, armored core, & fighting force a lot, too. & ones with other Japanese demos, like Metal Slug 1. I miss when demo discs were cool & had that effect on me as a kid... Also einhander demo. Net yaroze comp racing game. Nightmare Creatures. Oh no, now they are all coming back to me!
720 (Atari) on the C=64. Me and my brother played it to death... It was cool because there weren't any enemies so you could just free skate around the park. If you've ever played the game, you'll know that in the 'final' version the hardest part is simply staying alive and avoiding the enemies. In the demo you couldn't die... I'd say it was better than the final game. One demo that also springs to mind is a baseball game on one of the Saturn (PAL) demo discs, maybe the one that came free with the console? I don't know 100% - I'm not a fan of baseball games but that one also got played a lot - probably more than most of the retail games I had.
I have a collection of Tomb Raider demos like they're part of the collection lol. I've really played all of them over and over and remember always finishing the demo before starting a game like it was a ritual. I was really a Tomb Raider freak in my early teenage years. I really need to play some Tomb Raider. That's exactly what's missing in my life!
I forgot to add the Left 4 Dead 2 demo on the 360, I played that online constantly. I ended up never buying the full game, because people still played the demo online. The same thing happened with Transformers War for Cybertron.
I played a ton of the Final Fantasy VII demo that came with my first Playstation. One of the Jampack demo discs introduced me to Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and I played that demo almost nonstop until I was able to find and purchase it a few weeks later. Those discs were only $4.99 but gave me so much entertainment. Either L1 or R1 would rotate the tile and sometimes there would be a code on the back that would give you additional content. I was a huge fan of the Jampack series.
The original playstation demo disc with reloaded and a I think wipeout XL on it. I played woxl so much.
Years ago, there was a promotion for the Saturn where if you sent in a bunch of wrappers from certain chocolate bars, you would be sent a free demo of The Lost World demo. Living in Canada, I was shocked to see that the promotion included Canada, so I bought a couple extra bars and sent them in right away. I don't know what happened, but instead of the Lost World demo, I got Sega Screams Vol. 2. It was so much better than what I was hoping for! It came with a demo of Die Hard Arcade, Bomberman, Amok and Scorcher. I played those games until it wasn't even funny anymore. I watched all the videos that came on the disc too, and I even found an ingame generated cut scene if you waiting long enough at the title screen! I wanted most of those games so bad, but unfortunatly, the Saturn was nearing the end of its life, making it very hard to find most of these games.
