    No matter what they did, it would be a cheaper version. I dont think anyone wants to spend thousands on the case. Would be easier in today's day I think.

    Just need to know someone who works in a milling/machine shop with the equipment. I could possibly make the 3D image of one, then all we would need is blocks of aluminum!

    I mean technically I have access to a CNC mill for aluminum but it's currently disassembled for the time being.

    If you look at that old photo from Edge, they were quite clearly hand-built prototypes. You don't make any more of those than you absolutely have to. In that photo you can also see that it's just using a standard PC motherboard (the edge of one of the PCI slots is visible). My guess is that they took the works from some of their development machines and shoehorned them into that x-shaped case. The externally mounted fan looks lake a last minute addition, too - one of the fans has properly engineered fan slots and the other just has a big hole cut in the rear plate and the fan stuck on the back outside the housing. This is what happens when you put it all together, find it's overheating and you have a show to attend in a couple of days :)

    My guess is that the one in the OP was a housing that just never got built into an assembled unit.
