By the way, what is your favorite SOR game? I've only ever played SOR3 - it was in the 6-pack collection dealy that came with my Genesis (which I still have oddly enough, after 16 odd years). I always liked it, I probably played it more than any other game on that cart.

SoR2 is the best most say, I agree.

While I can't attest to whether it's the best, it's certainly my favorite because I played it more than the other ones as a child.

Huh. Turns out the game I had was the original SOR. Are there major differences between the Japanese and western versions of the other SOR games, or just SOR3?

How many 320x240 (ish) games have been released in proper 2D HD? Uh... close to zero, if not zero. That this "only goes to 640x480" is a pretty lame point of criticism, especially considering it's been in development for 8 years. Plenty of PS2 era 2D games even cut corners by having low res backgrounds on high res sprites, and plenty are doing it now.

Even Hard Corps: Uprising cheats by having plenty of 3D objects in it. I'm happy to see a game with it's sprites in uniform resolution. Even Cave haven't done this outside of their arcade releases and arcade modes (which look like shit since the 360 has to filter them).

I've only watched a few videos but this looks fine to me. Some of the best games ever are only half of this resolution.

You forget , PS2 was an SD console that is played usually on a CRT TV, This was released for PC(WHICH uses most commonly today LCD/LED Monitors).
Therefore that's a piss poor reason to legitimize releasing it the way it is.
They could've ported it as homebrew for the PS2 or Xbox and it would've been fine(for the obvious). But PC's have been beyond 640x480 for almost 2 decades. There is no excuse for lack of hindsight in over 8 years of development for such a thing. Professional, Amateur or otherwise. It's a completely legitimate criticism.

As for "How many 320x240 (ish) games have been released in proper 2D HD?"
    Street fighter II
    Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
    For example.

This could've been one of the few.

who cares? It's free, it's a fan made game. They don't have to reach any target specifications at all. Sure, it would be nice if it was truly HD but just how many man hours do you think it would take to re-drawer every single piece of art? You can't just upscale everything, it has to be completely redrawn

I think nobody should be complaining about some pedantic detail like resolutions especially on free stuff like this, unless it's actually a real game you pay for.

    Those things don't bother me.

So? Low res backgrounds + high res sprites looks like shit on any CRT. If commercial games don't have the cash to redraw all sprites, why would a doujin? Don't like the way it looks, play it on an arcade VGA. That's what I'm gonna do.

    Not really.

And reached a fraction of the audience.

    There's one.

    Lol wut?

Puzzle Fighter HD pissed me off. The backgrounds and crystals were proper high-res, pretty good looking, but the characters were just the original animations thrown through a nasty interpolation filter. Would it have killed them to have done the job properly?

It would probably have killed the project. The character animations count for a shit ton of frames, and you can't just re-render them unless they're actually computer-based in the first place. Not saying they weren't, but even if they were it's likely the assets are in some deep dark part of Capcom's office.

So if Capcom couldn't re-drawer the characters in a games that's significantly smaller than this new Bare Knuckle remake, then there's no chance in hell a small group of people could.

Neat feature I've found on the savegame folder.

When you pull off the finishing move on a boss, the game snaps a shot of the decisive moment. Pretty useful for short-term discussions.

    Goes with the territory.

Unusual for Sega, though, they tend to turn a blind eye on these matters.

Well, for the eight years this was in development, Sega had a lot of time to have known about this game. It wouldn't surprise me.

Now if this was a Square Enix, we'd have a Crimson Echoes situation.
