A man armed with a knife has killed five people and injured 12 others in central Tokyo, Japanese media say.
The incident occurred in the Akihabara district, a shopping area known as Electric Town that is popular with young people and tourists.
A suspect, said to be 25-year-old Tomohiro Kato, has been arrested near the scene.
The stabbing falls on the anniversary of a brutal knife attack at a primary school in 2001.
Jiro Akagi, a police spokesman, confirmed Mr Kato's arrest and identity, but gave no further details. Earlier reports suggested he could have been a gangster.
Three men aged 19, 47 and 74 died after being stabbed in Akihabara, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the other two victims were male or female.
Five of the victims suffered cardiac arrest, a spokesman for the Tokyo Fire Department told AP news agency.

Interesting to see if he's otaku, or targeting them.

I read about "Gaijin Muggin's" in Akihabara recently as well with people targeting foreigners and robbing them in alleyway's. I know Japan isn't perfect and totally crime free, but these sorts of things seem to be growing in number all the time.

My wife (out of town) called me to tell me this. Had to make sure her geek husband wasn't out there. I always like to think I would stop said person if I was there. Of course, everything is different when you're on the spot.

It's not in the Japanese nature to confront, I think if a westerner had been there it wouldn't have gone on for fucking 20 minutes..

Sadly this is on the increase in Britain too. Violent knife & gun crimes are never out of the News these days. It seems to become a 'fashion' to just randomly injure people and although I believe in certain instances murder is not intended, carrying a knife and using it against someone will inevitably end in situations like this. Very sad and completely random. How do you defend against someone stabbing you from behind or attacking you out of the blue?

If he was otaku I wonder how the papers take it. After all the otaku related development in the past years I hope it'll be different from the Tsutomu Miyazaki case.

FFS, why do the press always do that? "He was affected & influenced by manga movies & computer games..." up pops the same debate, but nobody things 'perhaps the issues are deeper than that?'

We all know that out of the hundreds of posters here nobody has actually attacked a human being with a gun or a knife, right? Not harboring thoughts of mass killings because they played 'Mario' last night!!!

Looks like the story has been updated, death tolls up to 7 now.

"One witness described how he leapt out of the cab and stabbed a man he had already driven into several times. He then went after others in the crowd." WTF!?!?

Because it sells more, is cheaper to write (ie NO research at all) etc etc. I do hate the press today and if I do buy something its the Economist or the Financial Times.

    Hmmmm.....

It's Akihabara. There are westerners everywhere...well, more than most spots.

You'd be surprised. It's not 1950 anymore, and this wasn't the work place. Then again, most people probably have their guard down when they walk down the street on Sunday afternoon too.

Spooky thing: A friend booked a DJ from Europe last night. As the wife is out of town, I tagged along to the gig. We were talking about crime and whatnot, and I was saying how there's no random shootings or gang crime like you see in the states. But, when something does happen, it's a guy going nuts taking out a crowd of people. No shit, I said that about 12 hours before it happened.

Now to go off and talk about me getting attacked by beautiful women.

The video pictures show the MacMurders place but isn't that on the other side of Akihabara station?

The area which is marked on the map is around McDonalds/Retro Friends/G-Front, in fact the north end of (video game related) Akihabara.

Regarding the japanese society with all its education problems like the enormous pressure to be successful and the depressing view on a preprogrammed career, I was already wondering how long it would take to see such a headline.

Which headline? The one about the guy going nuts in a crowd? It's not a new headline.

Yahoo Japan News says that the cops were there somewhat early. He attacked 3 of them. As he ran off they tended to some of the victims. Fucked up.
