Well, a quarter with one guy going off for a killing spree in decades is still much safer than probably every bigger street around your house.

I still would rather live in Japan in poverty then live in the UK being well off. I've found Japan to be really safe and relatively crime free. In london, I've seen muggings, a car jacking, burglary, fights, knife fights and even the odd gun being flashed about. In Chicago I've been no more then 30 metres from two gangs shooting each other, leaving 1 guy dead and 2 injured and in Melbourne I have see a fist fight or idiots pushing each other at least once a fortnight. In Japan the hardest crime I've seen is someone getting pulled over for jumping a red light.

I am not saying there is no crime in Japan as every so often someone seems to snap and goes around killing people and I have played mahjong with a couple of low ranking yakuza bosses...

Still I am hoping it scares off the french and overweight americans.

This kind of stuff just baffles me. I just can't comprehend a situation like this happening where the person wouldn't be restrained (or at least cornered) immediately and yet this stuff happens. I mean it's not like a gun where he can hit you from a distance. If I saw something like this I'd grab the first item I could with some reach (like a broomstick) and start swinging. Have people completely lost their balls?

Oh, I've seen some angry Japanese guys before... maybe it's just me
and these hollow eyes of mine kekekekeke

I suppose I would take that back and say "compared to NYC on a hot sunday, it's candyland"

It's not the subject but I'm interested, are there currently some special problems with French in Japan?
With Americans there are sometimes some issues, but French are normally well appreciated in Japan(I speak of my personal experience when I lived over there).

Otherwise, sure,Japan is the number 1 regarding security in the world(apart some countries like Monaco,Singapour...).

Yet one interesting thing is to see how Japanese people think their country is not safe. When you discuss with them about insecurity, they always say there are a lot of problem in Japan. When I lived in Izumi-chuo(south of Osaka),a japanese colleague told me it was an area famous for delinquency...Never seen anything or never heard anything.Just sometimes there was one man who made a bit of noise with his motorcycle...Same thing when there were the really violent riots in 2005 in France. Some japanese friends told me France was now like Japan...

They just showed this on the news over here, a couple of minutes ago. I think the same thing, I mean come on, I know it might be a scary situation but how come nobody tried to stop him? At least as you say, throwing something at him or attacking with something with some reach. Fear might overcome people but you can still act out by reflexes... anyway, terribly sad news.

Don't forget that if you visit akiba, you'll end with your pockets empty XD

It's a sad new, but this is something very strange in Japan; compared with another countries, Japan is like Mushroom Kingdom.

The guy said he did it "because I was bored".

He ran over 2 or 3 people in a hired van and then got out and stabbed lots of others. I have seen video footage on the news here of people running about.

A bit scary, but Japan is very safe. However, I keep getting told that things like this or violent crime in general are on the increase.

This has bugger all to do with videogames.

Not really but most French people I have come across in Japan have been very arrogant, speaking in broken English to some shop assistant in Japan (try learning some Japanese...), checking games far too much (I've seen some french guy look at a lot of games checking for tiny marks in the obi...), snatching a game that I had put on the floor to look at another game and a few more things, even a few of my Japanese friends have said they think the french are a bit arrogent... :p

As for overweight americans, you can normally find them in a MacMurders.

I am British and thus like the French about as much as the average Japanese likes Chinese :p

Really though, I do know some French people and they are ace - but all people in all walks of life from where ever can be either really spot-on, or complete dicks. We're human after all.

Well, this was on the news all last night and this morning. NEW NEWS! Is that he never just stabbed people but also ran over 3 people in a mini truck in the main center of Akihabara. After that he jumped out and started stabbing.

Nothing ever much happens in Japan as far a serious crime goes but when it does it's always crazy shit like this. Japan is still a million times safer than any 1st world country out there. Ask any one who lives here (Who's not Japanese) and they'll tell you the same thing.

In the defense of the people there, the news reported that a group of people did crowd around the attacker, in an effort to stop or disarm him, but he waved his knife at anyone who approached.

    I can't say that I wouldn't run away in such a situation.

Yeah, that shit isn't going to fly in NYC. Some pissed off Jewish woman would probably take him down.
