It was not comparable to the one in March, not at all. However, pretty much the same place.

7.4 is much smaller than 9, in earthquake intensity.

2m tsunami warning, no reported damage or injuries at the nuclear plant.

Felt quite large still though, but really nothing compared to the "big one".

    Its like a big ride

I was munching away on tuna answering door casually and my neighbour was like " you are just eating tuna" - well if its a big quake i need all the nutrition I can.
I am always a little nervous though inside '_'

I'm surprised this is still being called an aftershock even though it's almost a whole month after the initial quake. Hope another big one doesn't happen.

Oh it's a big earthquake alright, just a lot smaller than the 9.0. Actually, a 9.0 earthquake has nearly 80 times more ground movement at the epicentre than a 7.1, and releases over 700 times more energy. (Drop down to a 7.0 and it'd be 1,000 times more.)

To put the latest earthquake in perspective, it was originally said to be a 7.4 but downgraded to a 7.1 - a 7.4 has nearly double the ground movement than a 7.1, and nearly 3 times more energy.

Apparently there are 18 earthquakes of a 7.something per year, but only one per 20 years in the 9s.

So yeah, it's a much, much smaller earthquake (and I'm sure noticeably so if you're there), but it's still considered "major" on the Richter scale.

*EDIT* It's obviously not very big - it was only given 10 seconds on the main BBC news, and nearly 15 minutes into the programme! Some guy shooting people at a school in Rio (I think?) came first and got more time.

It shaked quite a lot, even here in kanagawa-ken. living in the 4th floor.

They shut down two reactors in the north. They are cooled by diesel generators right now.

Fukushima plant didn't report any further damages due to the todays quake.

Some peeps in Miyagi-ken reported that the felt shaking was even stronger than the M9.0 one from March 11th.

It's sad to see Japan get hit like this again, especially so soon. They truly have steel in their spines, though. It seems that nothing, even several consecutive natural disasters, can keep them down. That's a respectable feat.

As always, bugger all happened where I live. Even when there was a biggish one in North kyushu last year we didn't feel it.

I said it was smaller, which is relative as pointed out by retro:

I suppose I thought your headline was a little sensationalist.

When it's only an aftershock... and after you've lived through hundreds of them of sizeable scale. Honestly, the first aftershock after the 9.0 was way more intense than this. Must have been closer to the surface, as it scared the fuck out of me. For this, I simply walked into the other room, got my bicycle helmet, and made sure the wife & kid were okay.

I'm finding the magnitudes to be somewhat misleading. Well... not w/o other pertinent information. Obviously distance from the epicenter is the main one, but depth is a huge factor. Hanshin was a 7.3 but was a mere 16km from the surface. Touhoku was 24km. Still shallow by all counts though. Then, you've got the direction the ground (where the buildings are) jumbles in.

I believe b/c it was directly attributed to the adjustment on March 11th.

I was so tired that I slept through it, although in Ibaraki it was only a 3/4 (using JMA Seismic Intensity) there was another one at 4.50am which did wake me up but that was more local (the epicentre was only about 10km away) and it still only registered as a 2.

Since I have been here (and I have only been here a week) there has been aftershocks every day and most of them have been noticable.

How are things at the power plant?

Getting news about it is becoming increasingly difficult these days.

I couldn't get much coverage on today's quake either.
Are things back to "normal" now?

Yeah, Ibaraki and Chiba pref. is quite plagued with little and greater after shocks since the 11th.

How are you up mate? Where do you live exactly in Ibaraki?

Hell, just 2 years back we got one in Texas, and I didn't think we were even on a fault line! It was quite small though, but still, who would have known?

    http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/05/17/Minor-earthquake-strikes-northern-Texas/UPI-56591242575817/

People all over Dallas and Fort Worth felt it, but it was only a 3.3-magnitude earthquake. But still, we have Tornado's more oft than naught.

Japan is a strong country, and they will recover, but I hope no more happen in such a short time, they haven't even had time to clean up after last month.
