From my limited understanding (and I'm sure I read this somewhere), earthquakes usually cascade along other local fault lines. Dynamic stress transfer, I think, would usually occur during the moments after the initial shock, as the seismic waves circle the globe.

They share the Pacific plate, and yes, action/reaction. Apparently though the Kantou area (I believe the Filipino plate) is far more likely to absorb that most of the adjustment from the Eurasian plate. That's what they're saying anyway. California could still get crushed tomorrow.

Actually from what I've read the stuff in NZ is not at all related to Japan, which would mean these recent ones won't fuck California (directly). Basically there's a limit to how far the effects of these adjustments goes, which seems to make sense to me.

Any cities in close proximity to a fault line, tectonic plate boundary, are at high risk and always have been.

The quake on Monday evening was fun, first it shook my apartment quite hard so things started to fall, so I decided to go outside into the carpark for safety then it started to thunder and rain, before all the power went off so I spent a long evening with a couple of LED cycle lights and my two netbooks for company, no internet though due to the router requiring power. Took about 4 hours for the power to come back on.

Yesterday I made myself a nice cup of hot tea and was walking back to the living area when the earthquake jolted the room quite violently and the slapstick comedy award goes to...
