Any particular brand of CD-R to minimize laser damage?

Like I have said a million times - its not a simple "burn as slow as you can!!!" that commonly gets repeated.

But generally I get ignored, so I gave up years ago - I tend to only bring it up in threads like this now, rather than correcting someone whos posted it.

    Nice little script!

People wanting to do this should be aware that this is not optimal for loading times, as data is pushed at the inner part of the disc, and you should not forget to binhack the binaries to the starting LBA of the second session, again this could be easily scripted using mkisofs -msinfo and the linux build of my binhack clone.

For "best quality" backup, I prefer data/data LBA45000 or audio/data for cdda.

You can write a text file for mkisofs that orders all the files, at which point you can stick a pad file at the start to force the data out far enough to get good speed. I should try that one time to see how much a difference it makes. :)

I take the same stance as you. its all about the media/burner combo then finding the sweet spot i generally find TYG03 likes to be done at 8-12 and according to scans that's where i get the best out of them etc. low and slow isn't the way to go these days with all the special strategies burners etc people have/use. i can see why you get frustrated bad_ad lol

Plus 70% of my burns are done on taiyo yuden premium media not the value crap

I have just run into this very issue.

I have used Kodak CD-R for my first batch of backups and had 100% success however I just got a spindle of the 99min CD-R from dealextreme made by plasmon (the ones with the bananas on them) and have made a bunch of frisbees now. I even tried a second copy of a game that was working on the Kodak CD-R to be sure and I am pissed off that I bough a stack of useless CD-R

Is there a trick to this that I havent tried? - FYI my skill level here is whatever comes before noob...

Does it only fails on 99min games when using the banana digital discs? Or does it even fails for regular 80min burns?
If it only fails for games over 80min, the problem is most probably your burner, most have issues with overburning (writing more than 80min).
If it fails with standard 80min burns, try different burning speeds to see if one got better results than the others. The quality can be heavily dependent on the speed/media combination.
If it still doesn't work, try a different burner, a good one preferably, plextor, yamaha crw-f1, etc.
If it still fails, you have a stack of nice Frisbees! You can even put one in the microwave for entertainment! Or fix one to a dremel and SPIN LIKE HELL! (wear goggles, I ain't responsible for accidents)

I personally never had problem with those discs, except the top/bottom ones that came scratched. Worked well burning my Shenmue II 99min release.

    Good luck!

    FG

weird.... 24x produces working disks... and it is the max write supported by the disc in my drive according to imgburn

    either way no more frisbees!

Like I keep saying - its to do with the writing strategy your writer uses for that disc/dye. Some will work better faster, some slower, some not at all.

Which is why I keep trying to correct people saying "burn as slow as possible!" as its just wrong.

    I have like 6 writers,

112, 215, 216, 217, Optiarc (cant remember model) and a lite on I cant remember the model of.

The liteon is a crappy writer though, but an excellent reader and used for scanning. (like I can see from your pic above you do the same).

The pioneers are pretty good with most things and very good with single layer Tayio's. The Optiarc is good with DL verbs and not much else.

I have a few writers too. ive just got one of them new optiarc cb-plus burners from the us absolutely stonking burner and burns xgd3/8.7gb without no payloads or burnermax. 24x burn i mean you can see where it ramps up in speed but not tried no dual layers yet.

your optiarc must be a 72xx for it to be good with dl's

Check out this for a good deal I got:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221165116567&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

Will burn XGD3 (using the payload tool), good because I took the optical drive out of my laptop to make space for another HDD. Despite it saying Grade C - it was boxed and sealed. Just a tatty box.

Optiarc is a 7240 (just checked)

I also have a iHAS 124 like yours I forgot about (for XGD3). Also have some other drives - a specific hitachi for dumping Wii discs on the PC and some others I cant even remember at the moment.

My 124 wont do xgd3 plus it cant even write TYG03 that well no more before it was "meh". burnt dc games well though at 24X on cdr scanned with a benq DW1650 which ive now broke :moody:.
i do have some plextor drives too but no room in the pc to put with my current burning setup, plus im really fortunate as my local media shop sells jvc TY at not much more then the common ritek g05 and it seems to be good batches

yeah mediastars pretty decent stuff, but i can physically drive/walk to my local media shop and lay my hands on 100 ty dvd-r for same money. so i tend not to bother ordering online and paying £5+ for postage

yeah locally i can lay my hands on just about anything media wise. Plenty of verbatim azo and TY but also alot of traxdata and other crap which i mean isn't too bad just to be a filler for a dvd player etc. But if i wanna play something on a console, its ty or verbatims and even then some of the verbatim batches lately have been questionable so i stick to ty
